Mrs. Clara A. MacAloney
1930-2010
With great sadness, we the family of Clara Ada (Hatt) MacAloney, of Port Williams, Kings County, share the news of her passing on Tuesday, March 23, 2010 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Newcastle, New Brunswick on February 21, 1930, she was a daughter of the late Frederick Hatt Sr. and Rebecca (Silikers) Hatt. Upon the death of her mother, she was loved and cared for by the late Roy A. Sparks and Ada A. (Hatt) Sparks. For several years they lived at the lighthouse in Beaver Harbour, New Brunswick and finally resided in Canning, Kings County. Clara started her career at the Canning Telephone Office, then transferred to Kentville where she continued to work, retiring from Maritime Tel & Tel. She is survived by her son, Norman G. Bennett, Windsor; daughters, Susan (Wade) Stewart, St. Andrews, New Brunswick; Wendy (Dennis) Gaskell, Kentville; brother, Frederick (Evelyn) Hatt Jr., St. Andrews; sister, Noreen (Carl) Goodwin, Yarmouth; sister-in-law, Miriam Lloyd, New Minas; godchild, Pamela (Best) (Steven) Power, Dartmouth; seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Phillip in 2007; her step-mother, Leora Hatt; a grandson, Thomas Lord. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation by family request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 27, 2010 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Reverend Thelma McLeod officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in the family plot in the Hillaton Cemetery, Kings County. Family flowers only, by request. Mr. Kenneth Michael "Ken" Hiltz
1933-2010
Kenneth Michael “Ken” Hiltz - 77, of Berwick, formerly of Cambridge, Kings County, passed away peacefully, Sunday, March 28, 2010 at home. Born in Berwick, he was a son of the late Henry and Eileen (Madden) Hiltz. He was a graduate of Berwick High School and received his amateur radio license in Grade 11. He worked in the family flower business, Country Flower Shop, for a number of years until he and his wife, Joyce acquired the business. In 1990 he received his 40-year pin from Flowers Canada and he and Joyce attended several flower conventions receiving awards from F.T.D. He enjoyed spending time at their cottage at Hunt’s Lake. He was a founding member of St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church, Berwick and was a 3rd Degree Knight, holding various offices with the Knights of Columbus, Council 5030, St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Kentville. He was interested in electronics, classical music and enjoyed square dancing. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, the former Joyce Marie Schroeder; two daughters, Bernadette (Clarence Jr.) Pudsey, Kentville; Vernita, Cambridge; a son, Robert (Sonya Murray), Centreville; a daughter-in-law, Doreen (Walsh) Miller, Cambridge; four sisters, June (Thom) Davis, Sackville; Mary Summerfelt (Garth Scott) and Helen Mosher, both of Kingston, Ontario; Debra (Angus) Doggett, Shubenacadie; step-grandchildren, Virginia “Ginny”, Angela, Jason, Amanda, Nadine and Melissa. He was predeceased by a son, Michael; a brother, Frank. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, March 31, 2010 with prayers to be held at 8:00 p.m., both in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 1, 2010 in St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church, Berwick, Father Larry Pitcher officiating. Burial will take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery, Kentville. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory may be made to the Annapolis Valley Victorian Order of Nurses, the Annapolis Valley Palliative Care Program or the Canadian Cancer Society. Anita “Mae” Corkum - 78, of Church Street, Port Williams, Kings County, passed away Wednesday, March 31, 2010 in Soldier’s Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born in George’s Brook, Newfoundland, she was a daughter of the late John and Delilah (Bailey) Ploughman. Anita enjoyed being a homemaker and loved caring for her family. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Milford; three daughters, Angela (Arnold) Williston, Miramichi, New Brunswick; Susan (Tim) Chung, Laos; Nadea (Simon) Cheung, Hong Kong; three sons, Calvin (Sherry) Riverview, New Brunswick; Edwin (Brenda) Church Street, Port Williams; Alan (Jane), Port Williams; two sisters, Effie Hodder, George’s Brook; Beulah Florio, New Jersey, United States; a brother, Colin Ploughman, Scotland; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by several brothers and sisters. Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday, April 2, 2010 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, April 3, 2010, Mr. Klinton Jacques and Mr. William Bryant officiating. Burial will take place in the Scott’s Bay Cemetery, Kings County. Donations in memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia. Mr. Bazil St. Clair Crandall
1940-2010
Bazil St. Clair Crandall - 69, of Kentville, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at home. Born in Kentville, he was a son of Leila (Corbin) Crandall, Fundy Villa, Berwick and the late Kenneth Crandall. He attended Central Kings Rural High School in 1952, the first year it opened. He was a member of the Army Cadets in the 1950’s, where comrade Al Jordan was his Commanding Officer. He joined the Army (R.C.E.M.E.) in 1962 and was stationed in Kingston, Ontario and Gagetown, New Brunswick. In 1963, he was stationed in Fort Rucker, Alabama, enrolled in a helicopter course. During that time, he had the honour and privilege of attending the funeral service for President Kennedy. He was chairman of the Sponsoring Committee F/L McLean Squadron and while chair, was instrumental in their achieving the top sponsor in the province. He joined the Royal Canadian Legion in Seabright in 1972, transferring to Berwick in 1974 where he held various positions, including the Executive, House and Building Chairman, Ways and Means Chairman and was involved with bingo and dances for a number of years. In 1991 he held the position of 2nd Vice President and in 1994 was voted Legionnaire of the Year. He moved to Kentville in 2003, transferring to Kings Branch No. 6, where he joined the executive in 2004. At the time of his illness in May, 2009, he was President of the Branch. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing darts and was an avid pool player. He was also a member of the Northville Farm Heritage Centre. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 47 years, the former Anne Bell; two daughters, Tina Marie (Terry) Pottie, Tantallon; Lori Anne (Doug) Earle, Centreville; a son, Michael (Debbie) Lewis, Wilmot; a sister, Pauline (Lawson) Sawler, Northville; a brother, Buddie (Donna), Lower Sackville; six grandchildren; nine great grandchildren, nieces and nephews; good friends of 35 years, Lew and Treca Johnstone, Kentville. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation, by request. A combined Royal Canadian Legion service and funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 3, 2010 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Reverend Gerald Zinck officiating. A private family burial will take place in the Lakeview Cemetery, Lakeville, Kings County. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory may be made to the Annapolis Valley Palliative Care Program or The Lodge That Gives (near the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax). Mr. Harry Freeman Bill
1942-2010
Harry Freeman Bill - 68, of Billtown, Kings County, passed away peacefully, Sunday, April 4, 2010 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, following a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Kentville, he was a son of the late Donald and M. Rosina (Cousins) Bill. Harry was a very humble person who always set the right example and was a hero and mentor to many. He graduated from Kings County Academy, where he excelled at athletics, including hockey and track and field, which he later coached. He was instrumental in starting the minor football program in Kentville. He obtained his Education Degree from Acadia University and returned to K.C.A. where he became a teacher. He later became Principal of Cambridge Elementary School, and then Curriculum Supervisor for the Kings County Amalgamated School Board from where he retired with the position of Assistant Superintendent of Schools. In his earlier years, he was a Queen Scout. He wrote “The Enduring Past”, a history of the Billtown Baptist Church in which he was an active member, serving on many committees and boards. He also wrote a history entitled “The Bills of Billtown”. He was a past-president of the Kentville Kinsman Club and enjoyed travelling. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and instilled an appreciation for nature and the outdoors in his own family. He arranged for his wife and sister-in-law to visit the wartime graves of uncles in Germany. Harry also enjoyed spending time with family at their cottage at Sherbrooke Lake. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, the former Patricia “Pat” Williams; two daughters, Susan (John) Walsh, Burnt Point, Prince Edward Island; Cathy (Ken) Burton, Hammonds Plains; a son, Donald (Suzanne), Mount Pearl, Newfoundland; two brothers, Franklin (Helen), Port Hope, Ontario; Carroll (Joan), St. John’s, Newfoundland; special sister-in-law, Pamela “Pam” (John) Loughead, Cambridge Woods; nine grandchildren, Patrick, Rebecca, Julia, Ian, Rachael, Emily, Nicholas, Jessica and Lauren; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a grandson, Jason Bill. Visitation will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 7, 2010 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. The funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 8, 2010 in the Billtown Baptist Church, Reverend Gerald Zinck officiating. Burial will take place in the Lakeview Cemetery, Lakeville, Kings County. Family flowers only, by request. Olive Marjorie MacDonald - 96, of Evergreen Home for Special Care, Kentville, passed away Sunday, April 4, 2010 in the home. Born in Boutilier’s Point, she was a daughter of the late Granville and Florence (Johnson) Awalt. She was a homemaker, accompanying her husband to many postings throughout his military career, including Halifax, Germany, Newfoundland, Greenwood and Ottawa. She was a charter member of St. Margaret’s Bay Order of the Eastern Star. She had a keen sense of humour and enjoyed reading, rug hooking, knitting, crocheting, tatting and playing cards, especially bridge. She is survived by a daughter, Joan Snellgrove, Troy, Alabama, U.S.A. and her two children, Shelby “Mac” Snellgrove and Debra Thompson; a daughter-in-law, Gladys, Ontario and her four children, Butch, Gwen, Diane and June; great grandchildren, Leslie Campbell, Derek (Anna) Thompson and Dejie (Matt) Guerrier; great great grandchildren, Brianna Campbell, Asa Carson-Thompson and Ava Guerrier; additional great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Reginald “Reg”; a son, Ronald; a son-in-law, Aubrey Snellgrove; a grandson, Steven MacDonald; three sisters, Dorothy Dauphinee, Iris Weaver and Madeline Frame; a brother, Earl Awalt. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville. There will be no visitation or funeral service, by request.
