John S. Hopkins
71, North Sydney
John “Jack” Stewart Hopkins, 71, a resident of Moulton Ave., North Sydney, died Tuesday, August 8, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of Edna (Stewart) Hopkins of the Northside Community Guest Home and of the late Frank Hopkins.
John worked as an electrician with Devco and later with Marine Atlantic until his retirement. He also enjoyed, over the years, painting scenes of Cape Breton.
Besides his mother, he is survived by his wife, the former Pauline Campbell; two daughters, Gail (Mrs. Graham Bardswich), Ross Ferry, Kelly (Mrs. Barry Brown), Sydney Mines; one son, Terry (Marilyn), Bathurst, N.B.; three brothers, Bill, Ottawa, Neil, Trenton, Ont., and Kevin, Sydney Mines; one sister, Lorraine Taylor, Georges River; seven grandchildren, Stacey, Sonya, Colby, Kaylee, Lawrence, Matthew and Katie; two step-grandchildren, John and Christopher.
He was predeceased by his father.
Visitation will be held today (Thursday), 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral service will be held Friday, 2 p.m. from St. Matthew Wesley United Church, North Sydney, with Rev. David Luker officiating. Burial to follow in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Matthew Wesley United Church.
Daniel James Penman
5, Shubenacadie
Daniel James Penman, aged 5 years, 9 months, of Shubenacadie, passed away at home on August 8, 2000, of cancer.
Daniel, born in Truro, was the son of Keith Alexander Penman and Teresa Petronella Suidgeest-Penman of Shubenacadie.
Daniel is survived by his younger sister, Maria Bethany Penman. He is also survived by his grandparents, Mary and Peter Suidgeest of Shubenacadie, and James and Delores Penman of Port Morien. In addition, he is survived by his Aunt Anne Suidgeest of Stewiacke, Uncle John Suidgeest of Shubenacadie, Uncle Nick and Aunt Sharlene Suidgeest of Mississauga, Ont., Aunt Angela and Uncle Stephen and their daughter Emily Larkin of Kentville, Aunt Monica and Uncle Fred Sgambati of Kentville, Aunt Petra Suidgeest of Stewiacke, Uncle David Suidgeest of Truro, Uncle Byron and Aunt Cathy and their children Gillian and Nathan Penman of Sydney, and Aunt Debbie and Uncle Jim Kiley of Etobicoke, Ont. He is survived, as well, by a large extended family.
He was predeceased by an infant cousin Breanna Penman of Sydney.
Daniel attended the Stewiacke preschool in the 1999/2000 preschool year. He enjoyed his time at preschool particularly with the other students. He liked riding his bicycle, watching movies and television, playing with toys, cutting out pictures, drawing and going to church. His lifelong pals were Bunny, Blankie, and Teddy. His favourite television character was Little Bear. He was a quiet young gentleman, with an easy going attitude, who made friends wherever he went.
Visitation will be held from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. on Thursday Aug. 10. Vigil service at 8 p.m. at the Ettinger Funeral Home, Shubenacadie. The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19, at the St. Bridget’s Parish in Shubenacadie, Father Arthur Gouthro officiating. Burial to follow in the church cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the IWK Hospital or the St. Bridget’s mortgage reduction fund.
Shirley Frances Pike (Sollazzo)
Shirley Frances Pike (Sollazzo) passed away peacefully on Aug. 7, 2000, at the V.G. Hospital in Halifax.
She is survived by her daughters, Deborah and Patricia, and sons Richard and Raymond, all of Ontario; her mother Bernadette; sister Marie; brothers, Jim, Jerry, and Pat, all of Nova Scotia, and five grandchildren.
There will be no visitation. A memorial mass will be held at Sacred Heart Church on Friday, Aug. 11 at 8 a.m.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Sydney Branch.
Roderick Basil Wadden
50, Catalone
he death of Roddie Wadden occurred Tuesday, August 8, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a short battle with cancer.
Born in Catalone, he was the son of the late William and Mary (Kennedy) Wadden. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish, Main-a-Dieu.
He was operator of R. Wadden Masonry Ltd., a bricklayer for the past 30 years and a member of the Bricklayers Union (Local No. 2). Roddie was an avid hunter and fisherman and will be fondly remembered for his sense of humor. He was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
Surviving are his wife, Jean (MacKay), formerly of Louisbourg; two sons, Trevor, Dartmouth, Craig (Darlene), Catalone and two loving grandchildren, Jenna and Justin. Also surviving are three brothers, David (Mabel), Catalone, Aubrey (Jeanette) Bateston, Michael (Margie), Sydney and eight sisters, Theresa, Carmel Cameron, both of Catalone, Florence (Howard) Oakley, Hazel Williams, Doreen (Abbie) Clements, all of Sydney, Violet (Alfred) Cadden, New Waterford, Marguerite (Billie) Morris, Halifax and Joan (John Allan) MacKay, Catalone. Also surviving are his mother-in-law, Haroldine MacKay, Mira; two sisters-in-law, Bonnie, Sydney, Pauline, Catalone; three brothers-in-law, Allan, Harold and Grant and sister-in-law, Beth and families. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by brothers, Reg, Howard, Tony, Stanley; sister, Sally in infancy; another brother Stanley in infancy and father-in-law, Duncan A. MacKay, Mira, formerly of Louisbourg.
Funeral arrangements under the direction of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney are incomplete.

Joseph Daniel Agnew
76, Sydney
Joseph Daniel Agnew, 76, Sydney, passed away Thursday, August 10, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
He was the son of the late Joseph and Mary E. Agnew.
Joseph is survived by two sons, Joseph and Alan, both of Sydney. He will be sadly missed by three sisters, Jane Coady, Tillie Lewis and Elsie Kaarto, all of Sydney.
Joseph was predeceased by two brothers, Roddie and Neil MacGillivray and one sister, Lucille MacCarthy.
There will be no visitation. Funeral mass will be held at St. Augustine’s Church, Saturday, August 12 at 11 a.m., with Rev. James Attwood officiating. Interment in St. Theresa’s Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to charity of choice.
Lindsay Jean Browner
19, Glace Bay
Lindsay Jean Browner, 19, of Taigh Gradhach and formerly of 142 MacIntyre Lane, Glace Bay, passed away peacefully Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, she was a daughter of Stephen and Linda (Routledge) Browner.
Besides her parents, she is survived by sisters, Holly and April; brother, Stephen, all at home. She is also survived by grandmother, Rita Routledge and by special grandparents, Bernie and Mabel McNeil.
She was predeceased by grandmother, Margaret Jean Browner and grandfather, Clarence Routledge.
There will be no visitation. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, 11 a.m. in the Curry Funeral Home Chapel, 775 Main St., Glace Bay, with Rev. Jim Oliver officiating. Burial will follow in St. Anne’s Cemetery.
Donations in Lindsay’s memory are suggested to Taigh Gradhach, 1468 George St., Sydney, B1P 1P3.
