Robert D. Knox
1950-2000
On July 29, 2000, the family gathered for a memorial service for Robert D. Knox, son of Douglas and Euella Knox of Sydney, who passed away in Intensive Care at the Queen Elizabeth Complex in Halifax on April 10, 2000.
The Ashes Service was performed by Rev. Glen Kent and Rev. Valarie Hunt and his remains rest in St. Mary’s Anglican Cemetery, Glace Bay, N.S.
Leonard (Tucker) MacNeil
73, Sydney
Leonard Joseph (Tucker) MacNeil, of 50 Tillock Drive, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, at the QEII Infirmary, Halifax.
Born July 27, 1927, Leonard was the son of the late Edward and Elizabeth (Campbell) MacNeil. Leonard worked for the City of Sydney Tax Department until his retirement in 1990. Tucker had a great love of Scottish music, walks on the boardwalk, and his numerous friends.
He is survived by one daugher, Helen (Barry Morrison); sons, Lennie (Jean), Billy and daughter-in-law, Donna MacNeil, all of Sydney. He was the cherished “Poppy” to nine grandchildren, Katie, Seamus, Maggie, Kyle, Amanda, Jarett, Jordan, Zachary, and Corey. Leonard is also survived by one sister, Joan (Perley Cameron) and many nieces and nephews.
Leonard was predeceased by his loving wife, the former Janet Roston, son Alvin, and a brother Jack.
Visitation will be held at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel from 7-9 p.m. Saturday and 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Sunday. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Church on Monday 11 a.m. with Rev. D. MacDonald officiating. Interment to follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to the Cape Breton Chapter of the N.S. Kidney Foundation.
Stanley Francis Orychock
80, Sydney
Stanley Francis Orychock, 80, of 56 Mount Pleasant St., Sydney, passed away Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Anthony and Anastasia (Hopluk) Orychock. He was employed as a security guard with Sysco for 48 years until his retirement. He also loved gardening.
He is survived and will be missed by his loving wife of 54 years, Mary (Gaetan); one daughter, Dianne (Neil) MacKenzie, Sydney; one son, Stanley Michael Jr., Halifax; three grandsons, Neil Lorne, Robert and Michael MacKenzie; sisters, Annie Hewak and Agnes Ojoleck, both of Sydney, Charlotte (Clarence) Landry, Sydney River, and one brother, Tony (Catherine), South Bar.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by an infant daughter, Brenda, and a sister, Nellie (Litowski).
Visitation for the late Mr. Orychock will be held today (Friday), Aug. 11, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, main level. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, in St. Mary’s Polish Church with Fr. Ted Rusnak officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

Robert Pearcy Ried
36, Florence
Robert Pearcy Ried, 36, of Little Pond Road, Florence, passed away Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, at home.
Born in St. Rita’s Hospital, Sydney, he was a son of George and Ann (Howatson) Ried of Florence.
Besides his parents, he is survived by a very special son and best friend, Ryan Turbide, and his mother Joanna Whyte; sisters, Debra Wells (Gordie), Winnipeg, Georgina Stark (Kevin), Vancouver; brother, Vernon, Vancouver.
Robert will be sadly missed by nieces, Theresa and Christina Wells, both of Winnipeg, and Catronia Stark, Vancouver; maternal grandparents, Robert and Helen T. Howatson, North Sydney; paternal grandfather, Pearcy Ried, Edwardsville; also by aunts, an uncle and cousins.
Robert was predeceased by his paternal grandmother, Laura Ried.
Cremation has taken place. There will be a memorial service Sunday, August 13, 2000, at 2 p.m. in Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home Chapel, 10 Clyde Ave., Sydney Mines, with Mrs. John Lamond officiating.
No flowers by request, donations may be made to Sydney Mines Salvation Army Citadel.
Ralph W. MacDonald Jr.
71, Bateston
It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the sudden death on Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, of Ralph William MacDonald Jr. of Bateston, formerly of 44 Ashby Rd., Sydney, son of Ralph Sr. and the late Jenny (Bates) MacDonald, Sydney.
His kind and gentle nature will be greatly missed by daughter, Carolyn and Gordon Tanner, Sardis, B.C.; sons, William MacDonald, Alberta, and Jay and Susan (Mason) MacDonald, Bateston, with whom he resided.
Poppa will never be forgotten by grandchildren, Kathy and Matthew Tanner, Sardis, B.C., Grant and Tonda MacDonald, Alberta, and Kody, Brady and Jenika MacDonald, Bateston, and one great-granddaughter, Desirée Tanner, Sardis, B.C.
Ralph has also left brothers, Frank and Helen, Mira, James (Bud) and Marg, Alberta and Ross and Maureen, Sydney.
Ralph has gone on to a better place to meet again his loving wife, Louise (Norman) MacDonald, who left his side six years ago.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 2 p.m. at St. Theresa’s Church, Rev. Angus MacDougall officiating. A reception will follow in the parish hall after the interment service in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Arrangements entrusted to T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel.

Rebecca “Minnie” Boudreau
76, Sydney
Rebecca “Minnie” Boudreau, 76, of Alexandra Street, Sydney, passed away peacefully Saturday, August 12, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Bonavista, Nfld., Mum was a daughter of the late Fred and Grace Abbott. Mum was employed at the City Hospital for many years before her retirement. She was a member of St. Andrew’s United Church, the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 12, Sgt.’s Mess, Club 55, Spanish River Seniors Club and a volunteer with the Red Cross. She was an active dart player and bowler. Mum was the last surviving member of her immediately family.
She will be sadly missed by her loving husband, Leonard; daughters, Betty, Sydney, Kaye (Bill) Taylor, East Bay, and Grace (Brother) Luther, Sydney River; son, Fred (Cookie), Hamilton, Ont.
She was predeceased by a brother, Stewart.
Nannie will be missed by her eight grandchildren.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Monday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service in the chapel 2 p.m. Tuesday with Rev. Ralph Johnston officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.

Miriam (Hutchings) MacDonald
74, Sydney
Death of Miriam MacDonald, 74, of 50 Gritton Ave., Sydney, formerly of Tilton, Nfld., passed away very suddenly, Wednesday, August 9, 2000, at Bedford, N.S.
Born at Blaketown, Trinity Bay, Nfld., she was a daughter of the late Solomon and Beatrice (Smith) Hutchings of Tilton, Conception Bay, Nfld.
She was a member of Saint Anthony Daniel Parish, Sydney. She was a long-standing member of the CWL, the Irish Benevolent Society and the Royal Canadian Legion, Ladies Auxiliary. She was a devoted volunteer for the Canadian Cancer Society, the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary Joan (John) MacAdam, Bedford, N.S., and Carmel Anne (Bob) MacDonald, Victoria, B.C.; one son, Donald Gerard MacDonald, Ottawa, Ont. She is also survived by eight sisters, Florence, Labrador, Kathleen, Sydney, Mildred, Margaret, Joan, Debbie, all of Newfoundland, Rhoda, California and Louise, Toronto; three brothers, Joe and Jack, Nfld., Soll, California; eight grandchildren, Glenn (Tara), Taunia, Liam, Andrew, Aimee, Jay, Connor and Breena, and two great-grandchildren, Jamie and Keegan.
She was predeceased by her husband, Francis E. MacDonald; two sons, Barry Francis and David Clifford; her stepmother, Belinda; brothers, William, Clifford, Wilfred; sisters, Lillian and Gertrude.
The late Mrs. MacDonald will have no visitation. Funeral mass will be held 2 p.m. today (Monday) in St. Anthony Daniel Church with Rev. L. Boone officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to the N.S. Heart and Stroke Foundation.
