Sister John of the Cross Hanrahan
87, Antigonish
Sister John of the Cross Hanrahan, 87, a Sister of Saint Martha, of Bethany Motherhouse, died at Bethany Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, in the 65th year of religious life.
Born in Lingan, Cape Breton, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Margaret (Fergus) Hanrahan.
Sister John of the Cross entered the Sisters of Saint Martha, in September, 1933. Initially she served in various areas of the congregation until further studies qualified her as a registered X-Ray Technician in 1943. She served in the X-Ray Departments of St. Michael’s, Lethbridge, Alta., St. Joseph’s, Glace Bay, St. Rita, Sydney, St. Mary’s, Inverness, and St. Martha’s, Antigonish, N.S., for a total of 26 years.
In 1970, she retired from X-Ray and served in the admitting office of St. Joseph’s Hospital for three years and then in St. Martha’s Hospital Nursing Service office for four years, followed by part-time work between the purchasing department at Bethany and secretary for Martha Home Health Care out of St. Martha’s Hospital. She served as community leader in Extended Care from 1984 to 1992.
She is predeceased by three sisters, Beatrice Schmidt, Mary Smith and Theresa MacMillan and four brothers, Bartholomew, Joseph, Thomas and Walter.
The remains are resting at Bethany where a Bible Vigil was held Sunday, Aug. 13, at 7:30 p.m. Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held today (Monday) at 2 p.m. in Bethany Chapel.

Raymond Banks Dort
58, Antigonish
Raymond Banks Dort, 58, of Antigonish, N.S., passed away suddenly at his home, Starhaven - RR#5 Antigonish, on August 11, 2000.
He was the owner and operator of Mari-Tech 2000 Communications Limited, Antigonish and Truro.
Born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, he was a son of the late Roy Dort, formerly of Guysborough County, and the late Ruby Mowatt (Lewis), formerly of Chipman, New Brunswick.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 33 years, Gwyn Dort (Pettigrew), and his loving daughter Shannon-Kristi Dort and son-in-law Jason Matthews, of Barrie, Ontario. Also survived by a daughter Heather (Gilles) Simard of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Sons, Jonathan and Michael Dort, of London, Ontario; brothers, Rodney Mowatt, of Fredericton, New Brunswick, Paul Dort, of New Glasgow, N.S.; sisters, Laurie (Ronald) Langille, of New Glasgow, N.S., Connie Ferguson, of Sydney, N.S. Also surviving are grandchildren, Morgan, Ashley, Scott, Ryan; nieces Anita, Alison, Amy and Hannah and a nephew Joey. He is also survived by two very special cousins who were thought of as brothers, Clarence MacDermind, of Sydney, N.S., and Charles (Ann) MacDermind, of Brampton, Ontario.
He will also be missed by several close friends and the invaluable members of the Mari-Tech 2000 family.
He was predeceased by a brother Billy Dort, Guysborough County.
Ray had a passion for gardening and an amazing “green thumb”. His family was the core of his existence, his soul. He had a great love for music and animals, the ocean and nature, good food and great fun. He was known for his intelligence, quick wit and sense of humor. He was his family’s “hero”.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation for family and friends will be held at his home (Highway 7 -Starhaven, RR#5 Antigonish) from 1 to 2 p.m. today (Monday) to be followed by a private family service.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.
Arrangements are under the director of the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow.
Raymond J. Burton
77, North Sydney
Raymond John Burton, 77, a resident of Young Ave., North Sydney, passed away suddenly Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, in his 77th year at the Northside General Hospital in North Sydney.
Born in Twillingate, Newfoundland, he was the son of the late Joseph and Lydia (Gillard) Burton. He worked as a Stevedore with Marine Atlantic for 31 years and later with AJK Agencies for eight years doing the mail run to Bay St. Lawrence. He was an active soldier with the North Sydney and Sydney Mines Salvation Corps. for more than 50 years.
He will be sadly missed by his wife the former Viola Organ; seven daughters, Ida Weakley of Toronto, Raylene McKinnon of North Sydney, Audrey Crabe of Fergus, Ont., Angela Dolomont of North Sydney, Glenda Marsh of Sydney Mines, Louise Ashford of North Sydney, and Yvonne McLeod of Sydney Mines; five sons, David of Calgary, Keith of North Sydney, Raymond of North Sydney, Clayton of Calgary, and Andrew of North Sydney; 22 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother Harris of Twillingate; two sisters, Muriel Jackson of North Sydney and Gladys Cox of Toronto.
Predeceased by his first wife the former Ruth Roberts, several brothers and sisters.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, Aug. 15, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral service Wednesday at 2 p.m. from the Salvation Army Citadel in Sydney Mines with Captains Rocky and Janice Bishop officiating. Burial to follow in Lakeside Cemetery in North Sydney. Pallbearers for Mr. Burton will be Bernie McKinnon, Neil McKinnon, Doug Marsh, Adam Marsh, Wayne McLeod and Don Hatcher.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to the Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Paul George Hemeon
55, Sydney
Paul G. Hemeon of 18 Old Kings Road, passed away suddenly Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Ralph and Edna (O’Neill) Hemeon.
He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
In accordance with Paul’s wishes, he will have no visitation or funeral services. Cremation has taken place. Interment will take place at Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Arthina (Tina) McGillivray
51, New Waterford
Arthina (Tina) McGillivray, 51, of 663 King St., New Waterford, died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000 in the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in Florence, Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of Wilhelmina (Sutton) Slade, New Waterford and the late William Slade.
Mrs. McGillivray was a member of the Salvation Army Citadel.
Surviving are her companion and friend, Charles Hurley; three daughters, Alicha Dawn, Crystal Gail, and Michelle Lynn (Tony) Leudy, all of New Waterford; a stepdaughter, Margaret May, (Rodney), Ont.; stepsons, Kevin and Leo MacLean, Ontario. Also surviving are four brothers, Clifford Slade, Clarence (Ann) Slade, both of New Waterford, Albert Slade, Ontario, Donald Slade (Sutton) (Patsy), Newfoundland; a sister, Anna Marsh (Bill), River Ryan; three grandchildren, Brittany, Tanner and Lakyn.
Mrs. McGillivray was predeceased by her husband, William MacLean.
There will he no visitation, by request. Funeral service will be held Tuesday 2 p.m. in the Salvation Army Citadel, Capt. Maxwell Snow officiating, followed by cremation. Donations to the Salvation Army in Tina’s memory, would be appreciated.

Mabel Christine (Huntington) Morrison
83, North Sydney
On Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, Mabel Christine Morrison passed away at the Northside Community Guest Home. She was formerly of Marion Bridge.
Born in Cains Mountain, Victoria County, she was the daughter of the late George and Mary (Carmichael) MacKenzie.
Mabel was a member of St. Columba Presbyterian Church and belonged to the church choir and guild. She was active in the Women’s Institute of Nova Scotia and many other organizations including the Rural Beautification.
Survived by her loving son, Farley Huntington (Fran), Whitecourt, Alta.; two granddaughters, Shauna and Jennifer Huntington, Sydney; husband, James Morrison Sr., Sydney; several nieces and nephews of the MacKenzie and Huntington families; friend, Earl (Jane) Hodgeson, Mira; and caregiver Bertha Ivey, North Sydney.
Mabel was predeceased by her first husband, George Herbert Huntington in 1984, brothers, Dan Murdoch, A.K., John and sisters, Jean and Barbara.
Visitations will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at St. Columba Presbyterian Church, Marion Bridge, Wednesday, Aug. 16 at 2 p.m. with Pastor Kevin Richardson officiating. Interment in Huntington Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Theresa Terrace Wing of the Northside Community Guest Home.
