Mr. Lloyd Levi Dorman
1918-2010
It is with great sorrow, we the family, announce the death of Lloyd Levi Dorman, 92 years of age, of Newtonville, Kings County on Sunday, July 18, 2010 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Newtonville, he was a son of the late William “Bill” and Carrie G. (Coldwell) Dorman. As a young man, Lloyd worked for Nova Scotia Power and the Department of Highways in the construction of Lumsden Dam, Black River Lake and Mathals Hydro Projects. Lloyd spent his lifetime farming and in the woods, enjoying his family and his many friends and neighbours. This “gentleman farmer” in retirement had the greatest pleasure watching his grandchildren and great grandchildren grow, tending his gardens and sharing with friends the stories and history of Gaspereau and Newtonville and surrounding area. He will be sadly missed by family, friends and neighbours of Newtonville. Dedicated husband of 61 years to Lexie (Harris); beloved father of Bill (Theresa), Alberta; Linda (John) McLean, Alberta; Dora (John Pasley), Newtonville; Carrie (Cecil Corbin), Newtonville; adoring grandfather of Danel, Kimberly, Troy, Melissa, Jennifer, Christopher, Candace, Devan and Justin; brother of Edra “Bunny” Mercer and Minnie Stoddart; several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Lloyd was predeceased by his baby daughter, Louise; sisters, Bertha Coldwell, Lottie Nause, Eva “Phoebe” Davidson and Elsie “Willa” Dorman; brother, Glenn. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville. Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, 2010 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 22, 2010, Reverend Ellen Hunt officiating. Burial will take place in the Willowbank Cemetery, Wolfville. Donations in memory may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or the charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.

Dr. Albert William MacPhee
1917-2010
Dr. Albert William MacPhee - 92, of New Minas, passed away peacefully on July 18, 2010 at Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Albert was born in Gore, Hants County on September 13, 1917. He received a scholarship to attend Macdonald College (McGill’s Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences) where he obtained a degree in entomology in 1940. Albert joined the Royal Canadian Air Force where he was asked to learn and work with then unheard-of radar technology. His work with radar systems led him to work in Philadelphia, Boston, Texas and eventually the U.K. until his release from the Air Force in 1945. After the war, Albert continued his research in entomology in Berwick and Annapolis Royal and subsequently earned a doctorate from the University of California at Berkley in 1959. Albert was made Entomology Section Head at Kentville Research Station in 1963 and he held this position until his retirement in 1982. Albert was a member of numerous entomological societies and his career lead him to participate in meetings and conferences all over the world. In 2001, he was given the NS Institute of Agrologists Distinguished Life Membership Award. Albert was the son of the late William and Verna (Gowe) MacPhee. Albert is survived by his wife, Vivian (Swain) MacPhee, as well as brother, Larry (Joyce), Gore, Hants County and sister, Vivian Hayes, Lantz; sister-in-law, Doris, Upper Nine Mile River. He is survived by his children, Peter (Marilyn), Port Williams; Patricia (John) Stevenett, Windsor, Ontario; Peggy, Sofia, Bulgaria; Mike (Bonnie), New Minas; Lorna (Clint Singer), Porter’s Lake and James, Halifax; stepchildren, Rick (Wendy) Swain and Sandra (Gary) Fancy, as well as six grandchildren, Nora MacPhee, Kentville; Meghan Hunt, Windsor, Ontario; Caroline (Rob) Sayer, Pickering, Ontario; Hayley MacPhee, Toronto, Ontario and Tanya MacPhee and Leon Singer, Porter’s Lake; step-grandchildren, Timothy and Matthew Swain, Scott (Avril) Fancy and Carin (Mike) Cress. Albert also has three great-grandchildren, Kristoffer Sayer, Sharon Stevenett and Katelyn Hunt and step great-grandchildren, Maeve Swain, Luke and Nathan Swain, Connor and Griffin Fancy and Caleb Cress, as well as many nieces and nephews. Albert was predeceased by his first wife, Doris and sisters, Olive and Janie (Seth) Withrow, as well as brothers, Arthur (Annie), Phillip, Graham; brother-in-law, Gordon Hayes and granddaughter, Colleen Stevenett. Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Friday, July 23, 2010 with a Royal Canadian Legion service to be held at 7:00 p.m., both in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 24, 2010, Reverend Robyn Brown-Hewitt officiating. Burial will take place in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill, Kings County. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Soldiers Memorial Hospital and Camp Hill Veteran’s Hospital for their exceptional care. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.

Mrs. Mildred Pauline Illsley
1923-2010
Mildred Pauline Illsley - 87, formerly of Woodville, Kings County, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, Tuesday, July 20, 2010 in Orchard Hall, Kentville. Born in Halifax, she was a daughter of the late Percy and Greta (Withrow) Ritcey. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. She was a longtime active member of the former Wesley Knox United Church, Woodville and had been active in her community. She was also a life member of the Lakeville Women’s Institute. She is survived by a daughter, Mary (Mac) Young, Milton, Ontario; two grandchildren, Amanda Young (Brad Johnston), Milton, Ontario; Stephen (Kelly), Acton, Ontario; a great grandson, Evan; her special friend and companion, Ken Parker; two sisters, Emilie (Don) Grant, Ottawa; Elaine (John) Mekechuk, Edmonton; two brothers, Paul (Pat), Woodville; Ralph (Clara), Kamloops, British Columbia. She was predeceased by her husband, Ralph Illsley; a brother, Frank (Shirley). Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville. There will be no visitation, by request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 22, 2010 in Trinity United Church, Waterville, Reverend Linda Winton officiating. Burial will take place in the Lakeview Cemetery, Lakeville, Kings County. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory may be made to Trinity United Church or the charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.

Mrs. Beatrice Elizabeth Browning
1927-2010
Beatrice Elizabeth Browning - 83, of Gibson Woods, Kings County and affectionately known as “Aunt Bea”, passed away on Sunday, July 18, 2010, in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Windsor, Ontario to a large family, she was a daughter of the late James and Lillian (McCathern) Browning. She lived and worked in Los Angeles, California for a number of years. She later moved to Montreal where she worked as a domestic. She loved to tap dance, read and decorate. Back in the day, Beatrice was a "real stunner". She loved the theatre, spending many happy hours there. She spent the last 12 years of her life in Gibson Woods in the Annapolis Valley, where she was loved and cared for. She was not as outgoing as she once had been, but if you heard Aunt Bea humming - you know that in her world, all was well. We will miss you Aunt Bea. You were a kind, gracious and grateful person who was loved by all who came in contact with you. She is survived by sisters, Violet Lawson, Elmira, Ontario; Norma (George) Duiguid, Detroit; Irene Johnson, Los Angeles; sister-in-law, Sylvia Browning, Windsor, Ontario; sister-in-law and caregiver, Geraldine Browning, Gibson Woods; brother, Earl, Richmond, Ontario; brother-in-law, Herb Burnette, Windsor, Ontario and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles Stewart; five sisters, Ruby Burnette, Dorothy Mitchell, Mary Ann Walls, Jean Scott and Shirley Smith; five brothers, James, John, Paul, Raymond and Orval. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville. There will be no visitation, by request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, July 23, 2010 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Pastor Stephen Gough officiating. Mrs. Pauline Marion Rafuse
1930-2010
Pauline Marion Rafuse - 79, of Baxter’s Harbour, Kings County, passed away Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at home. Born in Victoria Harbour, she was a daughter of the late Albert and Rossie (Warner) Parks. She and her late husband began Cornwallis Supplies, Kentville and later owned and operated H.E. Rafuse Supplies, Wolfville. Following the death of her husband, she was employed at Davies and O’Leary and later with Acadia University. She was a member of the Grand Pré congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses and enjoyed spending time in Baxter’s Harbour. As a young person, she was a member of the Parks Family Singers, where she sang and played the mandolin. She enjoyed playing cards, especially bridge and bird watching, especially hummingbirds. She is survived by two daughters, Marion (Claud) Guitard, Trenton, Ontario; Ann Rafuse (Perley Coldwell), Baxter’s Harbour; two sons, Brian (Valerie), Centreville; Stephen (Cheryl), Sackville; a sister, Clara Davidson, Halifax; a brother, Freeman Parks, Middleton; seven grandchildren, Shay-lee, Melanie, Joshua, Christopher, Hogan, Rebecca and Levi; three great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Harvey E. Rafuse; a sister, Ruth Salsman; a brother, Earl. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, July 29, 2010 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, July 30, 2010, Mr. George Laevens officiating. Burial will take place in the Willowbank Cemetery, Wolfville. Family flowers only by request. Donations in memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville.

Mrs. Norma Ada Pudsey
1925-2010
Norma Ada Pudsey - 85, of New Minas, passed away Saturday, August 14, 2010 at home. Born in Victoria Beach, Annapolis County, she was a daughter of the late Myrtle Halliday. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, her family was her life. She is survived by two daughters, Dorothy (Ken) Richert, Kentville; Linda (Buzz) Bezanson, New Minas; four sons, Eric, New Minas; Charles (Colleen), Prince Rupert, BC; Douglas (Lynn), Lower Sackville; Alex (Kellie), Kentville; 13 grandchildren, Tammy, Christy, Carrie, Brittany, Cheryl, Crystal, Regeana, Alexander, Michael, Scott, Jo, Holly-Lyn and Kaitlyn; great grandchildren, Brandon and Zoe as well as other great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence “Pap”; a daughter, Leslie Lynn, in infancy; a son, Leslie Corey; two sisters, Alberta Weir and Melita Rose; a brother, Burton. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville. There will be no visitation, by request. A private family graveside service will be held in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill, Kings County. Donations in memory may be made to the charity of your choice. A special thank-you to niece, Judy Pietersma for her thoughtfulness, compassion and devotion. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
