Mrs. Grace Edith Earle
1924-2010
Grace Edith Earle - 85, of Kentville, passed away Tuesday, June 29, 2010 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born on September 25, 1924 in Montreal, she was a daughter of the late John and Elizabeth (Riedle) McGee. She grew up in Montreal, later moving to Halifax and Kentville. She trained as a nurse in Windsor, graduating in 1949. She had been employed at the former Blanchard Fraser Memorial Hospital, Kentville for 34 years, retiring as a maternity nurse. She was a loving wife, mother, devoted grandmother and friend and especially enjoyed summers at the cottage at Medford Beach and spending time with her cherished grandchildren. She was a member of St. James Anglican Church, Kentville and a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Evangeline Chapter No. 15, Kentville. She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Clyde; two daughters, Lynne Earle, Wolfville and Lesley (Mike) Sweet, Medford; a son, Michael (Edna), Port Williams; five grandchildren, Patrick and Jennifer Earle, Megan, Lauren and James Sweet. She was predeceased by a brother, John. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville. There will be no visitation, by request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 3, 2010 in St. James Anglican Church, Kentville, Archdeacon Lynn Uzans officiating. Burial will take place in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill, Kings County. Donations in memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. Mrs. Jennie Evelyn Weir
1920-2010
Jennie Evelyn Weir - 89, of Kentville, passed away Thursday, July 1, 2010 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in the lighthouse at Burntcoat, Hants County, she was a daughter of the late William and Catherine (McCulloch) Faulkner. Jennie enjoyed travelling in the motor home, stopping at many places to visit with friends and family members. She had a special love for animals, especially her dog Ginger. She had been a regular at the Windsor Exhibition and enjoyed sewing, knitting, cooking and loved family get-togethers. She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Maurice; two sons, William “Billy” (Sylvia) and Douglas (Marie), both of Kentville; two half-sisters, Alice Eddy and Lenora Burgess; a half-brother, Donnie Faulkner; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two daughters, Elizabeth “Betty” Murphy and Shirley Zwicker; a sister, Mary; three brothers, Ruben, Letson and Ervin; a half-brother, Jim. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, July 3, 2010 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, July 4, 2010, Reverend Doctor Peter Lohnes officiating. Burial will take place in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill, Kings County. Family flowers only, by request. Mr. Harry Alvin Holmes
1947-2010
Harry Alvin Holmes - 62, of Steam Mill, Kings County, passed away on Tuesday, July 6, 2010 at home. Born on December 4, 1947 in Halifax, he was a son of the late Jack and Ina (Brown) Holmes. Harry was well known in the community for being a working man and a family man. He had been employed for 23 years as a grower for Canard Poultry. However, Harry’s passion was carpentry and he had become an accomplished and respected carpenter. He was a loving husband and father and adored his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, the former Carolyn “Connie” Leslie; sons, Adam (Kathie), Harry Jr. (Darlene Bezanson) and Steven (Jennifer Smith); three grandchildren, Ayla, Quaid and Kayden; his step mother, Evelyn Holmes; sisters, Eva, Dorothy, Vivian and Edith; brothers, James and Jack Jr. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville. To honour Harry’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. A private family burial service will be held at a later date in the Lakeview Cemetery, Lakeville, Kings County. Mrs. Christina Catherine O'Brien
1915-2010
Christina Catherine O’Brien - 94, formerly of Montreal and Calgary, passed away Friday, July 9, 2010 in the Wolfville Nursing Home. Born in Montreal, she was a daughter of the late Christopher and Eva (Mackelman) Murray. In her earlier years, she was employed with Sears as well as a library in Montreal. While living in Montreal, she was also involved with the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary, having served as a president. Affectionately known as “Teenie” and “Nannie Teenie” to her grandchildren, she had a great love for her family and was extremely proud of them. She is survived by two daughters, Maureen (Keith) Gibbon, Aylesford Lake; Dianne O’Brien, Vancouver; two sons, Gary (Loretta), Calgary; Patrick (Susan), Edmonton; a daughter-in-law, Judi, Vancouver; two sisters, Evelyn (Charles) Young, Toronto; Audrey Law, Montreal; seven grandchildren, Brian, Kim, Kathy, Tracey, Christie, Tim and Shawn; ten great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Francis “Pat”; a sister, Viola. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. with prayers to be held at 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 13, 2010 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. The funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 14, 2010 in St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Kentville, Father Craig Christenson officiating. Margaret Grace (Nicholson) Butler … 88, of Sydney, Nova Scotia, passed away on Saturday, July 10, 2010, in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, Nova Scotia. Born in Jersey Cove, Cape Breton, on May 28, 1922, she was the daughter of Alexander and Effie (Buchanan) Nicholson. Margaret was a resident of Sydney and a valued employee with Sobeys, Sydney, for over thirty years. She was a member of the Bethel Presbyterian Church. Many will remember visiting the homestead at Jersey Cove, Cape Breton and enjoying Margaret’s warm hospitality as she welcomed family and friends with the ever-present hot cup of tea and plate of scones. She is survived by her sister, Anne Bishop, New Minas, Nova Scotia, her caregiver during the past three years and with whom she made her home during the last six months; nephews, Cameron (Allison) Bishop, and their daughter Susan, Ardrossan, AB; Martin (Elizabeth Snook) Bishop, Dartmouth, and his daughter, Pamela Bishop and Valerie (Justin) Dowding, Dartmouth, NS; Alex Nicholson, Fletcher’s Lake, NS; Clark Nicholson, Englishtown, NS; Philip (Brenda) Butler, New Glasgow, NS; Brian (Debbie) Butler, Fall River, NS and their family Darryl, Colin (Naomi) and Tara Butler; nieces, Anna (Greg) MacDonald, Halifax, NS; Marie (Joe) Gregoris, and their son Mitchell, Etobicobe, ON; Audrey Nicholson, Toronto, ON; Peggy Nicholson, Halifax, NS; Karen Forbes, Canandaigua, NY. Mr. Dana Milton Patterson
1962-2010
Dana Milton Patterson - 48, of Wolfville, Kings County, passed away peacefully with his family by his side, in the ICU of the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville on the morning of July 13, 2010. Born and raised on a dairy farm in the Annapolis Valley, he was the youngest son of the late Ivan and Elizabeth (Fraser) Patterson. He received a diploma in agriculture from the Nova Scotia Agricultural College in 1982 and went on to the MacDonald College of McGill University where he received his B.Sc. in Agriculture in 1984. Upon completion of his degree, he went to work for Shur-Gain as a feed sales representative. He became well respected by the farmers he worked with for five years. He then joined his brother, Eric on their third generation family dairy farm. His passion for farming and love of agriculture was evident to all those who knew him. Dana served on a number of boards and associations over his professional career, including the Farmer’s Milk Producers Association for six years from 1991-1997, where he was on the executive for three years, served as vice-chair in 1993 and was elected chair in 1994; a director on the board of Farmer’s Co-operative Dairy Limited for three years from 2003-2006; was active with the Wolfville Home and School Association, where he was instrumental in the construction of a new playground. Dana was very valued in these and other organizations for his dedication and common sense approach to the issues. He was a member of the Greenwich United Church, where he served as a trustee, on the board of stewards and was the congregational chair during a major building renovation. He was an avid curler with a gentle and kind spirit and a wonderful sense of humour. He was an incredible husband, an awesome dad and was loved by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife, Shelley Lynn (Hustins); two children, Alyssa and Jamie, both at home; two brothers, John (Anne Marie), Lakelands, Hants County; Eric, Greenwich Ridge; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Garnet. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville. Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Saturday, July 24, 2010 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, July 25, 2010, Reverend Robyn Brown-Hewitt officiating.
