Ronald Bernard MacDonald
72, Sydney Mines
Ronald Bernard MacDonald Sr., 72, of 9 Yorke Street, Sydney Mines, died Saturday, July 8, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in North Sydney, he was the son of the late John Angus and Angela Louise (March) MacDonald. He was a member of St. Pius X Parish, Sydney Mines. He was employed with the C.B. Development Corp. until his retirement.
He is survived by his daughters, Angela (Mrs. Everett Herridge), Laura (Mrs. Leonard Pye) and Carolyn (Mrs. Leo Bonar); his sons, John (Lorraine), Ronnie, Brian, Robert, Leonard (Rachael), Eric (Janet) and Clarence; his sisters Clara, Carmella and Edna; his brothers, Clarence, Arnold, Albert and Walter and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Also surviving is his companion Agnes MacAulay and his close friend David Seaward.
He was predeceased by his wife Rita Mae (MacLean), his daughter Marlene Marie, his brothers Leonard and Charles.
Visitation today (Monday) 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The Funeral will take place Tuesday at 10 a.m. in St. Pius X Church, Rev. Tony MacDonald officiating. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Sydney Mines.
Derrick (Rick) MacDougall
54, Donkin
Derek (Rick) MacDougall, 54, of 43 East St., Donkin, passed away peacefully Thursday, July 6, 2000, at home.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of Ann MacIntyre and the late John MacDougall. Rick was employed with Devco for 25 years up until his retirement in 1999.
Rick is survived by his wife, the former Brenda Baxter; daughter, Lori Lynn and a son, Andrew, both of MacKenzie, B.C., and father-in-law and best friend, Henry Baxter; brothers, Frank (Mary), Donkin, Blair (Diane), Bruce (Debbie), both of Glace Bay; sisters, Sharon (Adie) Curry, Glace Bay, Lynn (Herb), Underhill and Douglas Town, New Brunswick.
Rick is predeceased by his brothers, John (Deacon) and James Leonard.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. There will be a memorial service Tuesday, July 11, at 3 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, with Fr. Peter LeBlanc officiating. Donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Lung Association or the Canadian Diabetes Association.
Clarence McLellan
93, Glace Bay
Clarence McLellan, 93, of Victoria Haven Nursing Home, Glace Bay, passed away peacefully Sunday, July 9, 2000, at the home where he was a resident.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Hugh and Martha (McNeil) McLellan.
As a young man, Clarence worked in the mines in New Aberdeen, later opening his own barbershop on McKeen St., Glace Bay, with the late Henry Nolan. Some time later he went into the clothing line and operated McLellan’s Men’s Wear on McKeen Street. Clarence was a member of the N.S. Barbershop Association and a member of the Glace Bay Council of the Knights of Columbus.
Clarence is survived by brothers, Jimmy, Gussie, Alex and a sister Sadie, all of Glace Bay, and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Clarence was predeceased by his brothers, Dan, Phonse, Gerald, Archie, and Gerard, and a sister Mary.
Visitation for the late Mr. McLellan will be Monday, July 10 from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be on Tuesday, July 11, at 2 p.m. at St. John’s Church, Glace Bay, with Fr. Paul McGillivray and Fr. Dwyer officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
David Hewitt Merchant
68, Bible Hill
David Hewitt Merchant, 68, of Bible Hill, died July 8, 2000, at the Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro.
Born in Sydney May 12, 1932, he was a son of the late John and Jean (Hewitt) Merchant. He was a professional photographer, having worked in Sydney, New Glasgow and Truro, and was a member of St. David’s United Church. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #26, Truro, a member of Truro Hub Campers, and loved golf, pool and a good one-liner joke.
He is survived by his wife, the former Arlene Davis; daughter Debbie, Westville; sons, John, West Bank, B.C., Greg, Eastern Passage, step-daughter, Cathy Fergus, Guelph, Ont.; step-sons, Tom Marshall, Metcalf, Ont., Scott Marshall, Fredericton, N.B.; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brothers, Bill, Ayr, Scotland, Ron, Trenton; sisters, Edna Mingo, Truro, Irene Morton, Port Elgin, N.B.; many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by brothers, Russell and Gordon. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of David’s life will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in St. David’s United Church, Pictou Road, Bible Hill, with Rev. Ebbie Snow officiating. Interment at a later date.
Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or to St. David’s United Church.
Paul Baxendale
57, Florence
Paul Baxendale, 57, of 34 Park Rd., Florence, died Monday, July 10, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Florence, he was the son of the late James and Helen (Carew) Baxendale.
He was a member of Wilson United Church and was employed as a commercial truck driver. He was also a life member and past president of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 83, Florence.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; daughters, Tracey, at home and Cheryl (Sheldon), Bras d’Or; sister, Brenda (Mrs. Gordon Reynolds), Sydney Mines; nieces, Heidi and Stephanie Slaptsis; nephews, Jamie and Stephen Reynolds; special brothers, Ervan O’Brien and Charles Herald and special sister, Aunt Ann.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Brenda and by a sister in infancy.
The family extends a special thanks to the staff of the ICU at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, to Dr. Kapoor and to Karen, for all their kindness.
There will be no visitation by family request. Funeral service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in Wilson United Church with the Rev. Allan Hallett officiating. Burial under the direction of Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, will be in Brookside Cemetery.
Allister Bond
81, Glace Bay
Allister Bond, 81, of 51 Fifth St., New Aberdeen, passed away Saturday, July 8, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Allister had been very ill the past two months.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late John Westley and Francis (Bishop) Bond.
He was a member of Warden United Church, Glace Bay. Allister worked as a coal miner all his life in No. 20 Colliery until his retirement. He served in the Canadian Army.
Allister is survived by his wife, Jean (White) Bond; daughters, Doris (Mrs. Henry Mills), Glace Bay, Sheila Mulhern (Eddie), Ontario, Diane (Mrs. Laurie Flanders), Alberta, Barbara (Mrs. Keith MacLean), Glace Bay, Carol Bond (Bill), Glace Bay; sons, Gerald, Edmonton, Alta., Sheldon, Glace Bay; grandchildren, Henry, Cecil, Lori, Dale, Jason, Lindsay, Troy; great-granddaughter, Amber Rose; sisters, Anna MacKenzie, Glace Bay, Alma De Jeet, Glace Bay, Erna (Mrs. Lauchie MacDonald), Mira. Also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by a son, Bruce Frederick Bond, granddaughter, Allison Lynn McLean, brothers, Carman and Wesley and sisters, Doris Bond and Norma MacLean.
Visitation will be held today (Tuesday), July 11, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 12, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Jim Chisholm officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Glace Bay.
No flowers by request of the family. Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or charity of one’s choice.
