Fred Mills
84, Donkin
Fred Mills, 84, of 38 Middle St., Donkin, died Wednesday, July 5, 2000, at the Glace Bay Healthcare Complex.
Born in Donkin he was the son of the late Raymond and Mae (Simmons) Mills.
Fred worked as a coal miner all his life in No. 24 and 26 collieries until he retired in 1972. Fred was a member of St. Lukes United Church, Donkin.
Fred is survived by sons, Raymond (Margie), Massachusetts, Robert (Joyce), Donkin, Jim (Margie), Prince Edward Island; daughters, Pat (Mrs. Henry Forward), Ontario, Ruth (Mrs. Brian Simpkins), Ontario and Gail (Mrs. George White), Donkin; 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Fred was predeceased by his wife, Mae (Vaters) Mills, brothers, Robert and Edgar, also a granddaughter in infancy.
There will be no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place. A private family committal service will take place Monday, July 24, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Jim Chisholm officiating. Burial will be in St. Lukes Cemetery, Donkin.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Lukes Cemetery Fund.
Isabelle Simpson (Hynd) Williams
61, Sydney Forks
Isabelle Simpson (Hynd) Williams, 61, a resident of Sydney Forks, passed away on Wednesday, July 5, 2000, at the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital, Halifax, following a brief illness.
Isabelle was born in Minto, N.B. and was the only daughter of the late Mary (Stone) and Lawrence Hynd.
A teacher for 25 years, Isabelle taught in the New Brunswick and Manitoba school systems. Throughout her life, she continued her work with children and young people.
Isabelle was an active member of St. Mark’s Parish, Coxheath, where she served as a layreader, Sunday School co-ordinator, parish warden and a member of parish council. She was a member of St. Mark’s Senior Choir and the Parish Contemporary Choir. As well, Isabelle was a valued member of various diocesan committees. At the time of her death, lsabelle was a Postulant for Holy Orders.
Isabelle is survived by her husband, Wallace (Wally), her uncle Harold Sewell, New Brunswick and cousins.
Visitation at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Welton Street, Saturday, July 8, from 7-9 p.m.
The Holy Eucharist in celebration of Isabelle’s life will be held at St. Aidan’s Church, Westmount, Sunday, July 9 beginning at 2 p.m. Burial will take place in St. John’s Cemetery, Point Edward.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in care of St. Mark’s Church, 46 Coxheath Rd., Sydney, N.S, B1R 1R3 to the “Isabelle Williams Memorial Bursary” which will be used to assist candidates for the Diocesan Non-Stipendiary Ordained Ministry Program.
Allister Bond
81, Glace Bay
Rose Marie (Axworthy) Brewer, 64, passed away Tuesday, June 13, 2000, in Brampton, Ontario.
Born in Sydney, N.S., she was daughter of Jean Axworthy and the late Daniel Earl (Mike) Axworthy.
Survived by her husband, Ronald; sons, Ronnie (Darlene) Brewer, Orangeville, Ont., Danny (Dale) Brewer, Brampton, Ont.; sisters, Lillian (Pat) Brewer, Orangeville, Ont., Donna (Charlie) O’Connell, Sydney; brothers, Johnnie (Theresa) East Bay, and Mike (Carol), Bramalea, Ont.; seven grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Funeral service was held in Orangeville, June 16, 2000. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Anthony Daniel Parish, Sydney, Wednesday, July 12, at 1 p.m.
Donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
Sarah Detheridge
86, Sydney
Sarah Detheridge, 86, of 45 Detheridge Dr., Sydney, passed away Friday, July 7, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, after a brief illness.
Born in North Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Louise (Vardy) Carroll. Sarah was a member of St. Mark’s Parish, Coxheath, and at one time she was employed at the city hospital.
Sarah is survived by her husband Robert Sr.; daughter, Jean, Sydney; sons, George (Marge), Sydney, Daniel (Claire), Coxheath, Thomas, Sydney, Charles, at home; sister, Leona DeLeskie Peppett, Toronto, and a daughter-in-law Effie. A loving wife, devoted mother and a wonderful grandmother to her 15 grandchildren and her 10 great-grandchildren.
Sarah was predeceased by a son Robert Jr., a sister Annie Newell and three brothers, James, Albert, and Michael Jr.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. There will be a memorial service at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel.
Memorials may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Alfred Sixten Greig
83, Sydney
Alfred Sixten Greig, 83, of Sydney, passed away Saturday, July 8, 2000, at the Harbourview Veteran Wing, Sydney Mines.
Born in Margaree, he was the son of the late David and Sarah (Lundin) Greig.
Alfred was a member of First United Church. He was an avid badminton player, skater, fisherman and gardener. He was retired from Sydney Steel where he worked in the mobile department as a diesel mechanic. He was a veteran of the Second World War and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 12.
Alfred is survived by his wife Florence (Fawnie) MacLean; daughter, Lisa (James) Simonds, Ottawa; sons, David, Toronto, Sandy, Sydney Forks; sister, Liney Ledrew, Sydney River; brother, Holger, Westmount, and three grandchildren, Heather, Andrew and Maia.
Visitation will be held Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at Sydney Memorial Chapel. A memorial service Wednesday 2 p.m. in the chapel with Rev. Fraser MacDonald officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of choice.
William Holloway
67, Alder Point
Mr. William Holloway, 67, of Alder Point, died Sunday, July 9, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney. Born in Springhill, N.S., he was the son of the late Joseph and Cerena (Mont) Holloway.
He was a member of Trinity Anglican Church, Sydney Mines, and was a retired Devco miner. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping and was a member of the Bras d’Or Wildlife Association.
He is survived by his wife Mary (Blenkhorne); sons, William (Bernice), Florence, James (Donna), Cold Lake, Alberta, Timothy (Shelley), Alder Point, Peter (Gail), Petawawa, Ont., Dougie (Kelly), Millville; sisters Edith Vincent, P.E.I., Jenny (Jim) Livingston, Springhill, Catherine Wood, Springhill and 11 grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his sister Lucy and brothers Herbie and Joe.
Visitation will be in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home Tuesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Trinity Anglican Church, with Archdeacon Reg MacDonald officiating. Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery, Tobin Rd., Sydney Mines.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
