Mary M. Bonnar
81, Sydney Mines
Mary M. Bonnar, 81, of Crescent Street, Sydney Mines, passed away Friday, July 7, 2000, at the Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston.
Born in French Cove, Richmond County, she was the daughter of the late John and Catherine (Robertson) Fougere.
She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, Sydney Mines.
Mary is survived by a sister, Philomen Calder, Richmond Villa, St. Peter’s; brothers, Ernest (Joan) Fougere, Charles (Pauline) Fougere, both of French Cove.
Mary was predeceased by her husband, Wilfred (Turk) Bonnar.
Visitation will take place at the G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines, Sunday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass Monday 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Sydney Mines, with Fr. Gerald Dunphy officiating. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Sydney Mines.
Donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Geraldine Teresa (Gerry) Carter
58, Halifax
Geraldine Teresa (Gerry), 58, Halifax, N.S., passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 6, 2000, at home surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born in St. John’s, Nfld., and grew up at 32 Beacon St., North, Sydney.
She was the daughter of the late George and Elizabeth (Peters) Parsons.
Gerry was educated at St. Joseph’s School in North Sydney and attained her accounting and secretarial diploma from St. Joseph’s Convent in Mabou, Cape Breton.
Over the years she was active in her church where she was a lay distributor and religious education teacher. She was an avid bridge player and enjoyed tennis and swimming during her summers at the Waegwoltic Club in Halifax. She and her husband operated Carter & Smith Ltd. for over 35 years. Among other interests, Gerry was a long-time volunteer for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
She is survived by her husband, Kenneth; three daughters, Karen and Dawn, Halifax, and Cathy, at home; one sister, Maureen (Mrs. John Lanigan), Halifax; three brothers, George (Theresa), North Sydney, Lloyd, Blacketts Lake and Brian (Valerie), Lower Sackville; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at Snow’s Funeral Home, Windsor Street, Sunday, July 9, 2-4, 7-9 p.m. The funeral will be at St. Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic Church in Halifax at 10 a.m., Monday, July 10, Fr. Lloyd O’Neill officiating. Burial St. John Cemetery, Halifax.

Mary (Rita) Ling
80, Reserve Mines
Mary (Rita) Ling, 80, formerly of Reserve Mines, and a resident of Seaview Manor for 2 1/2 years, passed away Friday, July 7, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late John and Amelia (Mullins) Bartlett of 98 Richmond St., Sydney.
She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines.
Mrs. Ling will be sadly missed by daughter, Loyola (Herbert) Thomas, Reserve, with whom she resided; sons, Gerard, St. Catharines, Ont. and Edward (Eddie), Sydney; brother, James (Jimmie), Taigh Na Mara, Glace Bay and formerly of Richmond Street, Sydney; grandchildren, Brenda (Steven) Binder, Sydney, John (Terri) Thomas, Moncton, Keith (Maryellen) Thomas, LaSalle, Que., Sheri Ling, Gerard Ling, both of St. Catharines, Ont., Jamie Ling, Glace Bay; great-grandchildren, Steven Binder, Curtis Binder, Amanda Thomas, Casey Thomas and Andrew Brewer; brother-in-law, John (Betty) Ling, Reserve; sisters-in-law, Sis Aucoin, Sydney, Margie Bartlett, New Waterford; special niece and godchild, Judy Jacques, Reserve; also many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Malcolm, brothers, Harry, Greg and D’Arcy, sister, Catherine (Tina) Fleming.
Visitation for the late Mrs. Ling will be held Monday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated Tuesday, 11 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines with Fr. Francis Cameron officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.

Derrick (Rick) MacDougall
54, Donkin
Derrick (Rick) MacDougall, 54, of 43 East St., Donkin, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 6, 2000, at home.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of Ann MacIntyre and the late John MacDougall. Rick was employed with Devco for 25 years up until his retirement in 1999.
Rick is survived by his wife, the former Brenda Baxter; daughter, Lori Lynn and a son, Andrew, both of MacKenzie, B.C., and father-in-law and best friend, Henry Baxter; brothers, Frank (Mary), Donkin, Blair (Diane), Bruce (Debbie), both of Glace Bay; sisters, Sharon (Adie) Curry, Glace Bay, Lynn (Herb), Underhill and Douglas Town, New Brunswick.
Rick is predeceased by his brothers, John (Deacon) and James Leonard.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. There will be a memorial service Tuesday, July 11, at 3 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, with Fr. Peter LeBlanc officiating. Donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Lung Association or the Canadian Diabetes Association.
Mark Joseph MacIsaac
Glace Bay
February 19, 1976-June 27, 2000
Mark Joseph MacIsaac, of 111 Victoria St., Glace Bay, N.S., sadly passed away on Tuesday, June 27, 2000, in Ghana, Africa, as a result of a motorcycle accident.
Mark graduated from Glace Bay High School in 1996 where he was an active member of the year book staff. Mark later attended McKenzie College, Reeves Street, Sydney, where he studied computers, which he so loved.
Mark’s love of computers is what brought him to Africa. Mark was given an opportunity to work as a computer trainer with CUSO, knowing he was helping others in a foreign country thrilled him. Mark later went on to work with NCRC working as a Web page designer and then on to Choice Multi Media where he was in charge of the graphics department.
Mark is survived by his mother, Margie Kennedy, sister, Andrea, grandmother, Tess Kennedy, stepfather, Michael McInnis, stepsister, Patricia McInnis, stepbrother, Michael McInnis Jr., step-nephew, Austin McInnis-McDonald and his long time companion, Karen May. Also many uncles, aunts and cousins.
He was predeceased by his grandfather, Roy Kennedy.
He was a member of St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay.
Cremation will take place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay.

Robert (Bob) MacLeod
77, Donkin Highway
Robert (Bob) MacLeod, 77 of 536 Highway 255, RR No. 1, Glace Bay, died Thursday, July 6, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Donkin, he was the son of the late John and Jean (Robertson) MacLeod.
Bob was an adherent of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Glace Bay. Bob worked with Devco and Canadian Labour Canada as a safety officer for many years. He was one of the original members of the Men of the Deeps, and at one time was very active in music. He played in the Donkin Band, Acadia Orchestra and Gib Whitney Orchestra. He was also a former band instructor with the air cadets and sea cadets, Bob was in the Royal Canadian Navy from 1943 to 1945.
Bob is survived by daughter, Amour Gonneville, Glace Bay; son, Shane (Patricia), Glace Bay, with whom he resided; brothers, David (Lois), Donkin, John (Gladys), Alex, Donald G. (Phyllis), all of Glace Bay; sisters, Annie Murrant, Elizabeth MacMillian, Isabel Clarke, Jean MacLeod, Helen MacLeod, all of Donkin, Ruth (Mrs. Hughie Reid), Glace Bay; grandchildren, Daniel, Guylaine Gonneville, Sarah and Bria MacLeod.
Predeceased by his first wife, Mary (MacLean) MacLeod, second wife, Dorothy MacLeod and brother, Neil.
Visitation will be held today (Saturday), 7-9 p.m. and Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held Monday, July 10 at 2 p.m. in St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Glace Bay with the Rev. Eric Lynk officiating. Interment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney Highway.
Donations may be made to St. Paul’s Building Fund.
He never got to write his book but he touched the hearts of many.
