Ralph C.E. Martin
78, Sydney Mines
Mr. Ralph Charles Edward Martin, 78, of 3 MacInnis St., Sydney Mines, died Monday, July 10, 2000, at the Harbourview Hospital, Sydney Mines.
Born in Saint John, N.B., he was the son of the late Charles and Asta (Larsen) Martin.
He was an adherent of the Anglican Church of Canada, and was employed with Highland Lines, R.J. Logue, and was owner-operator of Martin Autobody in Sydney Mines. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 008, Sydney Mines, and served overseas during the Second World War with the St. John Fusiliers as a dispatch driver. He was also an avid fisherman and hunter.
He is survived by his wife, Lillian (Wells); daughters, Marilyn (Mrs. Donnie MacDougall), Sydney Mines, Dianne (Mrs. Ronnie Kempt), Groves Point; son, Jimmy (Rita), Sydney Mines; grandsons, Jason, Jamie, Eric and Charlie; sister, Bernell, British Columbia and brothers, Osborne and Alfred, both of Saint John, N.B., and Wally, Campbellton, N.B.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Judy in infancy and brother, Bert.
Visitation will be in Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home today (Wednesday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held Thursday, 11 a.m. in Wilson United Church with the Rev. Allan Hallett officiating. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetic Association or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
John Cann
79, Halifax
John Henry Cann, 79, Halifax, passed away Friday, July 7, 2000, at the home of his daughter, Paula Daurie.
Born July 28,1920, he was the son of the late William Henry and Kate (MacDougall) Cann (Sydney).
He is survived by his wife, Louise; his daughters, Shauna Foster, Ontario, Mary Lou (Mrs. Ronald Gomes), Boston, Paula (Mrs. Kenneth Daurie), Halifax; his sons, John Philip ‘Phil’, Saint John, N.B., Duncan, Halifax; his grandchildren, Robert, Lester, De’Allgo, Lance, Chad, Jenny, Jamie, Kate, Josh, Matt, John, James. He is also survived by five great-grandchildren and by his brothers, Seward Cann, Sydney, Gordon Cann, Sydney, William Cann, Halifax and sister, Marion Latham, Sydney.
He was predeceased by his daughter-in-law, Dale Cann and his grandson, Roger.
John was a native of Sydney. He served his country during the Second World War in the navy on the Corvettes, during the Battle of the Atlantic. He then moved to Halifax and attended the Maritime Business College, where he met his wife Anna Louise Veinotte.
He lead a very successful business career, owing and operating several businesses and developments. Among the businesses he owned were Purcells Cove General Store and Furniture, Bluenose Motors, Lunenburg, Bluenose Lanes, Lunenburg, Farmer’s Dairy, Lunenburg, Birchill Home and Trailer Sales, Sackville Home and Trailer Sales, Candav Holding, Future Energy, Cy’s Clan Music. John very generously spread his success by lending a helping hand to other up-and-coming entrepreneurs. John was a founding member of Calvin Presbyterian Church, Halifax and served as chairman of the building committee. He was also a member of the church choir and was a lover of classical music. John was known for his quick wit and good humour and will be sadly missed by all.
A memorial service was held at Calvin Presbyterian Church, July 10, at 7 p.m., officiated by Rev. Dr. Sandy McDonald. Visitation was at Snow’s Funeral Home, Halifax, July 9, 2-4, 7-9 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation of Canada or the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.
Beverly F. Carey
61, Key West, Fla.
Beverly Frances Carey, 61, a resident of Key West, Fla., died Thursday, July 6, 2000.
Born in Yarmouth, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Helen (Hines) Cooke.
Surviving are her husband, Leo Carey, daughter, Helena, son, Wayne, four grandchildren, two brothers, Lance Cooke, Dingwall, and Gilbert Cooke, Balls’ Creek; a sister, Alice Barron, Toronto. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a sister, Jean and a brother, Leonard.
Visitation will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A graveside committal service will take place Friday 3:30 p.m. at the Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney, with Rev. Allison MacLean officiating.
Bessie Louise (Boutilier) MacDonald

Bessie Louise (Boutilier) MacDonald, 78, of 118 Shaft St., Glace Bay passed away Tuesday, July 11, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Wadden’s Cove, she was the daughter of the late John James and Florence Boutilier.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Glace Bay. When Bessie was in good health, she was an avid bingo and card player.
Beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, she is survived by sons, George (Rosie), David (Joanne) and Gary, daughters, Florence (Milton), Joanne Usher (Mike), Shirley and Beverly (Ronnie), with whom she resided, all of Glace Bay; two special nephews, Bobby and Joe Boutiller; brothers, Henry, and Cecil; sister, Edie; 16 grandchildren, George, Yvonne, Dougie, Pippie, Casey, Natasha, Kevin, Cyrstal, David, Robbie, Billy, Rose Marie, John, Lisa, Patty, Beverly; six great-granddaughters, Taylor, Lexie, Jamie Leigh, Victoria, Hayle, Amy and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husband, David (Casey), three daughters and two sons in infancy, brothers, Billy, Charlie, Levi, Albert, Eldon, George and sisters, Charlotte, Shirley and Florence.
She will be sadly missed by her family and many friends.
Visitation for the late Bessie MacDonald will be held Thursday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Glace Bay with Rev. Fev Arnold officiating. Interment will be in Centerville Cemetery.
Hector "Hec" O'Neill
72, Glace Bay
Hector I. O’Neill, 72, of 16 Tracey St., Glace Bay, passed away Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late Phillip and Mary Ann (MacIsaac) O’Neill.
A devoted family man, a wonderful husband and father, he was employed with Devco for 40 years until his retirement in 1986. He was an avid hockey and baseball fan. He enjoyed dancing in his earlier years and had a wide circle of friends.
He is survived by his wife, Eunice; sons, Dwight, Toronto, Eric (Tanya), Dartmouth; daughter, Rosemary (Terry) Hollett, Manitoba; sisters, Annie MacEachern, Boston and Bridget “Heidi” Boudreau, New Waterford; grandchildren, Erica, Adam, Jarrod and Devon.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, John, Danny, James and Leo, sisters, Mary, Helen and Elizabeth.
Visitation will be in Curry Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay, Friday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday, 11 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Church with Rev. Paul McGillvary officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.

Helen Grace Rising
The death of Mrs. Helen Grace Rising, loving wife of Edward L. Rising, occurred Sunday, July 2, 2000, at the Loch Lomond Villa, following a period of illness.
Born at North Sydney, N.S., she was the daughter of the late Jasper C. and Catherine (MacRury) Pynn.
She graduated from Mount Allison University in 1934. Helen was an active member of St. Paul’s Valley Church and a member of the Needle Works Society of the church. She was a former board member of the YMCA, a past member of the Union Club and a former member of the Royal Standard Chapter of the IODE.
Besides her husband she is survived by four sons, John E. Rising, Kingston, Ont., Douglas J. Rising, Windsor, Ont., David G. Rising, St. John, Hugh W. Rising, Halifax, N.S.,; her sister, Mrs. Marion Jesty, North Sydney; her three grandchildren, Ted, Peggy and Jack.
She was predeceased by her brother, Allison Pynn.
The late Mrs. Rising rested at Brennan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row (634-7424) with visiting July 4 from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral service took place July 5, 2 p.m. from St. Paul’s Valley Church. Interment at Fernhill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to a charity of one’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
