BANKS, Lawrence Maynard
83, Shag Harbour, Shelburne Co., passed away Sunday, February 1, 2009, in Annapolis Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Shag Harbour on June 17, 1925, he was a son of the late Clarence and Florence (Hopkins) Banks. Lawrence was a veteran of the Second World War. In his younger years he was employed with Henry Kendrick Fish and Lobster Business. He then operated the Lawrence Banks and Sons Contracting Business. After his retirement, he spent his leisure hours doing wood working, a job he loved. He is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, the former Mabel Sears; sons, Wayne (Judy), Brian (Lorraine), Terry (Lisa); sisters, Shirley, Eileen, Phyllis (Fraser); grandchildren, Corey, Lisa, Wade, Mindy, Matthew, Jamie, Terilyn, Nicholas; 10 great-grandchildren; aunt, Gladys Banks; uncle, Donald Hopkins; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by baby sister, Eunice. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. today (Tuesday) in H. Huskilson's Funeral Home, Barrington. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Shag Harbour Baptist Church, Shag Harbour. Pastor Don Scheel officiating. Interment will be in the Old Farm Cemetery, Shag Harbour. Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, Rosalin Nickerson Care Fund or to a charity of choice.
WEBSTER (Ross), Jane Kern
89, of Pictou, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2009 in the VG Site, QEII, Halifax, following a brief illness. Born in Moose Jaw, Sask., she was a daughter of the late J. Gordon and Minnie (Kern) Ross. She was educated in Moose Jaw and at Branksome Hall in Toronto, Ont. and later trained as a medical technician. Jane served in the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War as a nursing sister in Halifax. It was there that she met her husband Dr. Donald R. Webster. They married in Montreal in 1945, and lived there until 1967, when they retired to their summer home in Pictou. Jane was an active participant in every community in which she lived, and will be remembered for her generosity, hospitality, and sense of humour. She is survived by her daughter, Janet (Roy Willwerth); son, Donald (Jackie Vacca); grandchildren, Nick, Jane, and Anna Willwerth, all of Halifax; her sister, Barbara (Mrs. Howard Dixon) of Del Mar, Calif.; her sister-in-law, Mrs. Marnie Ross of Waterloo, Ont.; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband; her brother, Dr. John Ross of Waterloo, Ont.; and her sister, Mary Kerr of Winnipeg, Man. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, in McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou. Funeral service will take place 11 a.m. Wednesday, in Pictou United Church, with Rev. Mary-Beth Moriarity officiating. Spring burial will be in Seaview Cemetery. Family flowers only please. TAYLOR, Cyril Charles "Cy"
February 11, 1926 - January 4, 2009. Cyril passed away suddenly but peacefully at Peace Arch Hospital in White Rock B.C., with his loving wife, Barbara at his side. Cyril was born in Truro, to Thomas and Hilda (Knickle), and had three sisters and two brothers. Right after High School, Cyril joined the RCAF, serving his country for 34 years, including two tours overseas (HQ - 4ATAF and HQ - SHAPE). Cyril had a passion for travel and square dancing; and with Barbara, spent years travelling around Canada and Europe combining the two pastimes. He had a wonderful appreciation for all things beautiful, especially music, art and photography. After retiring to B.C. in 1986, Cyril worked for Woodward's Men's Wear until the store closed its business. Cryil leaves to mourn, his adored Barbara (White), his wife of 61 years; son, Paul (Carol), Whitehorse, Y.T.; daughters, Barbara (Andre), Montreal, Que.; Celeste, Camrose, Alta.; Margo (Ron), Burlington, Ont.; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Cyril also leaves to mourn brothers, Gordon, Halifax; Royce, Guelph, Ont.; sisters, Ruth (Taylor) MacArthur, Truro; Joyce (Taylor) Bonner, Brampton, Ont. Cyril was predeceased by his sister, Noma (Taylor) Wigglesworth. A private funeral service was held on January 9, 2009, with interment in Valley View Cemetery, Surrey B.C. MacKINNON, Vera B.
94, of Ocean View Manor, Eastern Passage, and formerly of Moncton, N.B. and Scotch Settlement, N.B., with members of her family by her side, passed away peacefully at the Dartmouth General Hospital on Friday February 6, 2009. Born in Middle Sackville, N.B., she was the daughter of the late Harvey and Gertrude (Yeomans) Stokes. Vera was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and was a member of Middle Sackville Baptist Church, N.B. She was an avid outdoors person, enjoyed gardening, working with flowers, watching hockey games (Maple Leaf fan) but first and foremost was her love for her family and friends. Vera will be sadly missed by her son, Jim (Carol), Dartmouth; daughter, Ruth Steeves (Kenneth), Courtenay, B.C.; grandchildren, Terry, David, Greg, Craig, Tim, Jennifer and Melissa; great-grandchildren, Dwayne, Aaron, Zoe, Michelle, Karen, Leanne, Caleb, Rebecah and Arielle; two great great-grandsons; sister, Florence Rhodes, Sackville, N.B.; several nieces, nephews and cousins. BARKHOUSE, Melba Irene
93. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Melba Irene Barkhouse, born September 5, 1915, in Forties, Lunenburg Co. Melba died peacefully on February the 8, 2009, in Grand View Manor surrounded by her loving family. She was the daughter of the late Rufus and Emily (Legge) Hiltz. She was a member of Christ Anglican Church, Berwick, Kings Co., and was a former member of the A.C.W. In her early years she came to the Annapolis Valley to work as a housekeeper for a number of families. After raising her family she worked at M.W. Graves Ltd., Berwick. Surviving are her two children, son, Lester (Vivian) Barkhouse, Waterville, Kings Co.; daughter, Gloria (Garth) Illsley, Kentville; Kings Co.; grandchildren, Lawrence, Katherine, Donnie Barkhouse; and Rebecca (Illsley) Gonzalez, Scott Illsley; and six great-grandchildren. Proud sister to brothers, Carl (Eva) Hiltz, Fraxville, Lunenburg Co.; Calvin (Jean) Hiltz, Forties; sisters, Parnell (Laurie) Powers, Berwick, Kings Co.; Leola Hiltz, Fraxville; Lucille Avery, Beaver Bank; Thelma Keillor, Beaver Bank; Rolena Brown-Cochrane, Forties; Lois Durling, Cambridge, Kings Co. Melba's greatest joy was her family and friends and always treasured time spent together. She enjoyed quilting and knitting and making numerous pairs of socks. She took great pleasure in cooking and baking and a visit to her home always included a delicious meal and many desserts. She had a keen interest in nature and loved to study the flowers, birds and patterns of the sky. A heartfelt thanks goes to the staff of the Grand View Manor who provided special care to Melba and her family, especially this past week. Special thanks to Cathy Best and David Galley. Melba will be fondly remembered by all who knew her and sadly missed. Visitation for Melba will take place 6-9 p.m. Tuesday in the H.C. PROCOS, Dimitri
On February 6, 2009, at the age of 68 at the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax, after a battle with cancer, with Judith Greenwood, his loving partner of 27 years, at his side. Born in Athens, Greece, on September 14, 1940, he was the son of Patroclos and Mary (Buhler) Procos. Dimitri was raised in Greece and Switzerland, and spoke fluent French, German, Greek and English by his teens, as well as a smattering of other languages. Dimitri came to the U.S. in 1960, where he was a foreign student at Brandeis, later transferring to M.I.T. where he received his Bachelor of Architecture, and then to the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, where he received his Masters degree in 1967. After two years in Toronto, he accepted a position in Halifax with the School of Architecture at Nova Scotia Technical College (later Dalhousie University). Dimitri remained there until his retirement in 2006, rising to the status of Full Professorship in 1994. He also held Visiting Professorships at the Universite de Paris 1 (Pantheon and Sorbonne) in 1984-85, the University of the Aegean, Athens and Mytilini in 1991-92, as well as Athens Technical University in 2000-1. Professor Procos was the founding Chair of the Department of Urban and Rural Planning in the Faculty of Architecture at TUNS from 1978-1981. Professor Procos was intensively involved in funded research centred on energy issues in the built environment. His applied and contract research was conducted in urban and rural settings ranging from the metropolitan scale to that of a single building. Dimitri was a constant participant in architectural competitions; he and his students were often successful competitors in both national and international design competitions. In addition, he was a tireless conference attendee, presenter and organizer. Professor Procos retired from Dalhousie's Faculty of Architecture and Planning in 2006, after a long career as teacher, researcher and practising architect and urban planning. Through his passionate and innovative work in the fields of energy conservation and sustainable building design, he made an invaluable and lasting contribution to our knowledge in a field of immediate and urgent concern of mankind. As well as his professional ventures, Dimitri also was an avid world traveller, and had a keen interest in politics, history, the arts, stimulating conversation, and enjoyed following soccer, tennis and the Olympics. Professor Procos is survived by partner Judith, sons Alexis Procos and Nicolas Procos (Fairlight de Michele), stepchildren Lisa Van Houten (Craig Fraser) and Jason Van Houten (Robin Cormier), grandchildren Zoe Paloma and Julian, and stepgrandchildren Christopher, Leilia, Angus, and Catherine, as well as relatives in Switzerland. Visitation will be held at Atlantic Funeral Home, Bayers Road, Halifax, on Monday February 9 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will take place at Saint Georges Greek Orthodox Church, Purcell's Cove Road at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, February 10. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of choice.
PORTER, Gertrude Gladys
89, of Amherst, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 7, 2009 in the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre. Born in Amherst in 1920, she was a daughter of the late Alexander and Caroline (Finnigan) Rhindress. Gladys was a member of the First Baptist Church and the A.P.A.G.E. Club. She was a member of the Amherst Golden Years Society. Gladys was the first lady to work behind the counter at the Amherst Post Office. She loved to fish, and was a kind and wonderful woman who will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Gladys will be sadly missed by her grandsons, Rick McKay, Bridgewater; Scott McKay, Dartmouth; Dale McKay, Ottawa, Ont.; great- grandchildren, Krista McKay, Jeffery McKay, Timmy Hickey, and Craig Hickey; sister, Bernice Chapman, Amherst; brothers, Robert, Amherst; and Benjamin, Trenton. She was predeceased by her husband, Ernest F. Porter in 1988; and daughter, Shirley McKay. Arrangements have been entrusted to Furlong Jones Funeral Home, Church St., Amherst, N.S., (902-667-8777). Her funeral service will be held in the Furlong Jones Chapel, 68 Church St., on Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at 2 p.m. Friends and family will gather for a time of visiting from noon until the time of the funeral at 2 p.m. on Tuesday. COLE, Myra Adelaide
She departed this life shortly before 5 a.m. on February 7, 2009, in her home in Milton, Queens Co., tenderly cared for by her husband, Ronald C. Cole. She was born on April 30, 1920 in Liverpool, a daughter of Capt. Edgar J. Inness and his wife, Jennie G. (More). Besides her husband, she is survived by her children, M. Christine Conrad and her husband, Borden of West Berlin; Teresa A. Ruzycki and her husband, John, of Yorkton, Sask.; and John R. Cole and his partner, Diane Dorey of Bridgewater. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Hayes W. Conrad, Nathaniel J.W. Conrad, Charlotte Sharkey (Joey) and Benjamin E. Cole. Two of her sisters survive her, Jean F. Nickerson Lloyd and Mary Millard and her husband, Robert. She was predeceased by her sister, Margaret McClearn; brother, Herbert, Inness and a sister, Edith, who died in infancy. Interment will be in St. Gregory's Catholic Cemetery, College Street, Liverpool. No flowers at the request of the deceased. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to any charity.
THOMAS, Clifford Joseph
91, Meagher's Grant, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2009, in The Birches Nursing Home, Musquodoboit Harbour. Born in Woodlawn, he was a son of the late Howard and Eliza (Cross) Thomas. A meat cutter by trade, he farmed, and was well known for his love of gardening. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Surviving are children, Jeanette (Eric) Romkey, Sandra (Allen) Baker, Lee Thomas (Bernie Rhode), Bob (Patsy), Joe (Deb), Connie (Steve) Shearer, Peggy (John) Marinus, Phyllis Thomas, Kim Thomas (Rob Montgomery); daughters-in-law, Ruth Thomas and Debbie Thomas; 30 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; sisters, Dorothy Zinck and Ruth Stevens. He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, the former Ethel Dickie; sons, Jim and Doug; daughter, Maxine in infancy; first wife, the former Eileen Dares; brothers, Aubrey, Stanley, Wilfred, Sam, Earl; sisters, Grace, Blanche, Lillian and Marion. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be Tuesday, 6-8 p.m. and funeral service will be Wednesday at 2 p.m., both in St. James United Church, Meagher's Grant, Rev. Joan Griffin officiating. Burial will be in Meagher's Grant Cemetery. A reception will follow in the Meagher's Grant Fire Hall. Family flowers only. CAINES, George Arlington H.
68, Waterville, passed away on February 5, 2009. Born September 19, 1940, in Halifax, he was a son of the late George and Minnie (Thorne) Caines. He was a gentle man who was very social and loved to laugh with his friends and family. He was a lifelong Jehovah's Witness who believed in the promise at Isaiah 26: 19 "Your dead shall live, awake and sing, you who lie in the dust (KJV )." As his condition worsened, he maintained a sense of humor and concern for loved ones, enjoying visits and outings with a smile for all. Georgie will be greatly missed by wife, Sandra (Helpard) and son, Michael; grandson, Brandon; brothers, Wayne (Wanda), Rick (Rose); uncles, Ken, Walter, Freeman; aunts, Olive, Minnie, Helen, Dot; brother-in-law, Barry (Angie), and many nieces and nephews. Also, close friends who never missed a chance to call or visit to help out, Lloyd and Heather Wall, Gordon and Lou Romans, Kelvin and Natalie Ward and elder, Wayne Robicheau who kept in contact, offering to help in any way. George was previously employed with Sobeys/ Empire for many years and with S. Havill Enterprises, previously a self-employed contractor. He loved golf, music, and sports in general. He was a selfless person who felt compassion for all and would be there to help out in any way he could. He strongly believed we all have the hope of living forever in a new system that the Holy Bible Speaks of, yet this time has not come to pass and as such, we all must rest until that day comes, but we do have the promise of seeing our loved ones again in a new world of Jehovah's making. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service, followed by a reception, will be held at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 825 Park St., Kentville at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, February 14, with Brother Benny Isenor officiating.
