Jean L. Greeno
1924-2012

With much sadness, the family of Jean L. Greeno, aged 88, widow of Aubrey Greeno of Truemanville, NS announce her peaceful passing at the Gables Lodge, Amherst on Monday, December 17, 2012.

Born in Lower Shinimicas, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Sarah (Black) Smith.

Jean was a community minded person, throughout the war years she worked in Amherst at Canada Car, moving to Montreal where she was foreman on the factory floor at BOAC, manufacturing instrument panels for the Liberator and Lancaster bombers. Upon being contacted by Aubrey Greeno, after his return to Canada following VE day, she bought a wedding dress and returned home to be married, becoming the mother of 7. Being the wife of an RCMP Marine Division Officer she lived in Halifax and St. John's NL, returning to Truemanville upon retirement. Throughout her life, Jean was active in community and church activities.

Jean will be sadly missed by daughters, Sharon Pye (Terry) of Halifax, NS, Sandra Doney (Robert) of Lower Sackville, NS, Angela MacLean (Chris) of Dartmouth, NS; sons, Gordon (Eleanor) of Middle Sackville, NS, Earl of Truemanville, Brian (Della) of Halifax, NS, Kevin, of Lakeside, NS; 8 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren; sister, Doris Smith (Ronald) of Linden, NS.

She was predeceased by her husband, Aubrey in March 2012; brothers, John, Arnold and Leon and a sister Stella.

Jean's remains have been entrusted into the care of the Furlong Jones Funeral Home, Amherst (902-667-8777) from where a time of visitation will be held on Wednesday from 7 to 9 pm. Funeral service will be held at the Sunrise Trinity United Church, Amherst Head on Thursday, December 20, 2012 at 2 pm, reception to follow, Private family burial in the Northport Hillside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of the donor's choice gratefully appreciated

Tallien "Dolly" Weatherbee Thornton
1918-2012

Tallien "Dolly" Winnifred (nee White) Weatherbee Thornton, age 94, of Amherst passed away peacefully at Gables Lodge on Tuesday, December 18, 2012.

Born in Amherst, she was the youngest daughter of the late Josh and Emma (Landry) White. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, being predeceased by seven brothers, Leon, Quincy, Bill, Dosithe, Allan, Cedric and Lester and by six sisters, Thelma, Ethel, Sister Dorothy Marie, Leda, Marjorie and Kathleen.

Dolly was predeceased by her first husband, Robert Weatherbee, and by her second husband, Arthur Thornton. She is survived by dauughter, Joan (Wentzell) Ripley; son, Allan (Pat) Weatherbee; step-son, Douglas Thornton; step-daughter, Marilyn (George) Baptie; grandchildren, Wendy Tardiff, Heather Ripley, Cathy MacLeod Gary Ripley, Ryan Weatherbee, Cory Weatherbee; eight great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

Dolly loved to dance, skate, bowl and play Bingo. She enjoyed many summers at the family cottage at Jackson's Point. Dolly was a beautiful seamstress making clothes and costumes for her family. She was a lifelong member of St. Charles/Holy Family Parish. She was active in the Catholic Women's League, at one time serving a president.

Funeral arrangements for Dolly have been entrusted into the care of the Furlong Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church Street, Amherst (667-8777) where visitation will take place on Friday from 7 to 9 pm, parish prayers will be held at 8:30. Funeral mass will be celebrated at Holy Family Parish Church on Saturday, December 22, 2012 at 10 am. Burial in the St. Charles-Nativity Cemetery in the spring. Memorial donations may be made to the Lung Association or a charity of the donor's choice.

Mary Anne "Annie" Stewart
1915-2012

It is with deep sadness that we must announce the peaceful passing of Mary Anne "Annie" Stewart, age 97, of Truro, formerly of Amherst, NS. Annie passed away on Saturday, December 22, 2012 at the Cedarstone Enhanced Care in Truro.

Born in Amherst, NS, she was a daughter of the late Andre and Philomene (Mallet) Breau.

Annie was a member of the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church. She loved to play cards, dance, fish and travel. She was also a member of the Good Neighbors Seniors Club. She was frequently known to be at the mall Food Court enjoying a coffee.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews; step-daughter Joan Whippie, Salisbury, NB; and Brother-In-Law, Aubrey MacInnes, Onslow, NS.

The last surviving member of her immediate family, she was predeceased by her husband Lloyd; brothers James and Alfred; sisters Jean Goring, Catherine Feeley, Helen Smith, Yvonne Merritt and infant Mary.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Furlong~Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church St., Amherst (902-667-8777). Visitation will take place on Thursday, December 27, 2012 from 9:30 am until the time of Mass at 11 am in the Chapel at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, Prince St., Truro. Funeral Mass will be celebrated immediately following visitation in the Church at 11 am, Rev. Father Dariusz Miskowicz officiating. Burial will take place in the St. Charles-Nativity Cemetery, Amherst, in the spring.

Those wishing to make a donation in Annie's memory may do so to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, or a charity of your choice.

Annie Moore Glenn
1931-2012

Annie Moore Glenn, 81, of Lower Cove, Cumberland County, passed away peacefully on December 31, 2012. Born on June 17, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Irving Alexander Smith and Mabel Mary (Bourgeois) Smith of Lower Cove.

Annie was employed at the T.E. Eaton Company, Moncton, and the Canadian Bank of Commence, and Enamel and Heating, Amherst, and taught elementary school in Lower Cove. In later years she worked for Elections Canada and Census Canada and was a Notary Public.

Annie loved the local community and was a dedicated volunteer for many years with the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Canadian Cancer Society, and the Canadian Kidney Foundation. Annie was a past member of the Cumberland County School Board and the River Hebert and Joggins Development Committee and past secretary-treasurer of the Joggins Improvement Committee. In 2007 she was named Municipality of the County of Cumberland District 9 Volunteer of the Year.

Annie attended St. Alban’s Anglican Church in River Hebert and was a member of the Mayflower Rebekah Lodge #21, of which she was past Noble Grand, past president of Rebekah District Meeting, and secretary and past president of the Mayflower Rebekah Lodge #21 Past Noble Grands Club. She was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #4, Ladies’ Auxiliary.

Annie had a life-long love of words. She was a voracious reader, with a particular interest in the history of World War I and in poetry. She was an avid Scrabble player and enjoyed solving the daily newspaper crossword puzzle. She was also a dedicated quilter and a member of the River Hebert sewing group.

Annie is survived by Reginald, her husband of 58½ years; two daughters, Laurie (Barry Norris) of Lower Kingsclear, NB, and Maureen (Gordon Glennie) of River Hebert, NS; two sons, Alton (Daphna) of St. John’s, NF and Labrador and Gordon (Louise) of Irishtown, NB; four beloved grandchildren, Rachel (Eric), Ian (Jessica), Eamonn, and Elizabeth, with a great-grandchild expected soon; two sisters, Beatrice (Edgar Burgess) of Amherst and Catherine (Chester van der Kooi) of Upper Nine Mile River, NS; and three brothers, Darrell of Halifax, David (Diane) of Lower Cove, and Allen of Amherst. She was predeceased by her parents and brother Robert.

A memorial service will be held in the spring at St. Alban’s Anglican Church in River Hebert with interment in the River Hebert Cemetery. Donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Mary Esther Donovan
1938-2013

Mary E. Donovan, 74, of River Hebert, passed away at the Northumberland Hall, Amherst on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 with her loving family by her side. Born in River Hebert she was a daughter of the late Harris Sr & Helena (Melanson) O'Brien.

She was a member of the Maple Sugar Cloggers and the Brookside Curling Club. She loved dancing and music.

Mary had been employed with the Highland View Regional Hospital for many years.

Mary enjoyed spending time with her family and will be sadly missed by her 3 daughters; Sheryl Davis (Dwain), River Hebert, Tairyja Donovan, Amherst, Twilla Quinn (Steven), Upper Sackville, NS; 2 granddaughters, Tia and Kelsi Davis; four sisters Inez (James) Speare , River Hebert, Doris White, Amherst, Joyce (Gornal) Burbine , River Hebert, and Debbie (Conrad) Carde, River Hebert, as well as a brother John (Jill) O'Brien, England.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by two sisters, Ann Richards & Barbara White, as well as four brothers, Harris Jr., George, Donald, and Jimmy.

Mary's arrangements have been entrusted into the care and supervision of Furlong~Jones Funeral Home, River Hebert, (902-251-2877) from where visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 pm on Thursday, January 10, 2013. A funeral mass will be held at St. Paul The Apostle Roman Catholic Church, River Hebert at 11 am on Friday. Father Phil Thibodeau officiating.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Brian Ferguson and the staff at Shannex Northumberland Hall for their continuing care, compassion, and support.

Donations in memory of Mary may be made to the Parkinson Society of Canada - Maritime Region.

Catherine "Cathy" Ripley
1952-2013

Ripley, Catherine Jewill, 60 years of age, of Amherst, passed away on Tuesday, January 15, 2013 after an eight year battle with cancer. Cathy was the eldest daughter of of Gordon and the late Helen Baird (Rhindress). Beside her father , she is survived by her husband, Frank; daughters, Royleen, Jennifer (Lance) LeBlanc; brother Steven (Diane) of Calgary; sisters Lindy Baird (David Ripley), Amherst and Nancy (Hugh) Calder of Halifax. She will be greatly missed by grandchildren, Jacob, Caleb, Kennedy, Kolby and Gracie and special nieces Blaine (Josh) Carter and Shelly (Richard) Barker.

Cathy , other then working at N,S, Tel & Tel, spent her entire working life in Banks, starting with the Royal Bank in Amherst and finishing there. In addition, in Banks in Lahr, West Germany, Victoria, BC, Yorkton, SK, Fredericton, NB and Halifax.

She was very artistic and learned to paint from her mother, Helen and Aunt Maddie. Cathy loved to travel and did extensively in Europe; but most of all she enjoyed time at the cottage at Seagrove, being around her beautiful flower garden and spending time with her children, grandchildren, friends, and those times with her dear girl friends for a get together.

Special thanks to Dr. Rubin, Dr Mukherjee and entire staff on the 6th floor of the Moncton City Hospital, Dr. Halina Bienkowski, the Emergency Ward at Cumberland Hospital, Red Cross, the E.M.S. and lastly the V.O.N. for the stellar job they do.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Furlong-Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church St. Amherst, N.S. (667-8777). Funeral service will take place at Furlong-Jones Funeral Home on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Byron Corkum officiating. A reception will follow at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society, Canadian Red Cross or a charity of your choice.

Joseph B. Murray
1914-2013

Murray, Joseph Bernard- 98, of Parrsboro and Halifax, passed away Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at Melville Lodge, Halifax.

Born Dec. 19, 1914 in Lakelands, Cumberland County, Joe was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was the eldest son of the late William and Emma (Morris) Murray.

Joe will be remembered fondly for his accomplishments as a long distance runner and for his vivid poetry recitations. Joe completed the Boston Marathon twice, as well as many other races, and ran until he was well into his seventies. The family farm in Lakelands was always home for Joe but he also had many friends in Halifax where he spent his later years, in particular John MacRae, Patricia Conrad, and Frank Levy.

Surviving are 12 nieces and nephews, Margaret Ann Rouse, Catherine Rouse, Michael Rouse, Anne Murray Orr, Patricia Murray, Barbara Motut, Nancy Murray-Smith, Rosemary Murray-Fenton, Bernard Hoganson, Helen Hoganson, Emily Gildner, and Ann Edwards, as well as sister-in-law Joyce Murray and brother-in-law Cyril Hoganson. Besides his parents, Joe was predeceased by his siblings, Elizabeth Hebb, Thomas Murray, and Margaret Hoganson, and his nephews Tom Hoganson and William (Billy) Rouse. A special thank you to the staff of Melville Lodge for their kindness during Joe’s time there.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Furlong~Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church St., Amherst, NS (902-667-8777).

Visitation will be held on Friday, January 18, 2013 from 7 to 9 pm at St. Brigid’s Roman Catholic Church in Parrsboro. The funeral will be on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 11 am in St. Brigid’s Roman Catholic Church, with Rev. Phil Thibodeau officiating. A reception will follow in the parish hall. Burial will be in St. Brigid’s Cemetery in the spring.

Phillis Olivia (Fillmore) Canning
1931-2013

Phillis Canning of Amherst, and formerly of Sackville passed away peacefully Friday, January 18, 2013 at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Upper Nappan, NS.

Born in Fairfield, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Mary (Freaney) Fillmore.

Phillis was very much a homemaker, loving her dogs, cats, and music. She cherished her family, especially her grandchildren spending as much time as possible with them.

She is survived by her husband Doug and will be dearly missed by her children Brenda (Jody) Mitton, Dieppe, Bruce (Gab), Dieppe, Darlyne (Rick) Moss, Shemogue, Kathy (Rick Allison) Pellerin, Moncton. She is also survived by grandsons Steven, Kenneth, Justin and Garett; granddaughters Heidi, Kate and Meghan as well as many nieces and nephews. As well as her extended family at the Prince Arthur Boarding Home. She is the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Her funeral service will be held from Amherst Weslyan Church, 50 Cornwall Ave. on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at 1 pm, Pastor Rev. Raymond R. Fancy officiating. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Furlong~Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church St., Amherst, NS (902-667-8777). Burial will take place in the Sackville Cemetery in the spring.

Donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association, the SPCA, or the charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the Doctors, Nurses and Staff, especially Geoff, of the Medical Inpatient "A" Wing at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre. These professionals went above and beyond their call of duty to provide loving and compassionate care to Phillis and her family.
