Arturs Valters Tora

Arturs Valters Tora was born on his father’s farm, Rankas pagasta, Latvia on June 30, 1919. He was one of five siblings. He worked on his father’s farm after graduating from Smiltenes Lauksaimnieciba School.
In 1944, he joined the Latvian Army as a First Aid Medic. In 1945, he was hospitalized in Hamburg and then moved to a British zone displaced persons camp where he met his wife Ieva Lazdins whom he married in 1947.
Arturs came to Canada in 1949 and began working at Dofasco Steel Co. in Hamilton, Ontario where he worked until he retired in 1982.
Arturs Tora built his own home in Hamilton. He had one son, Uldis Valters, who was born in 1953.
Arturs enjoyed fishing and gardening and in 1970 acquired land in Gandenville on Wellers Bay, which he and his family enjoyed. They cleared the land and built two cottages there. His wife Ieva died suddenly in 1988. Arturs continued to be active at gardening and cottage life.
He always has a big smile and will be sadly missed by Uldis, his wife Rita and his first grandchild expected in February 2001.

Bill was an avid musician who loved his music and continued to play piano after his retirement from the Hamilton Musician’s Union.
