Katherine (Kay) Margaret Eastham
October 29, 1946 - February 18, 2002
Funeral arrangements by
Sherrin Funeral Home
At home, with family, on Monday, February 18, 2002. Kay leaves her beloved daughter Emma; her twin sister Jo Bromley and Jo’s partner Remo, in Napier, New Zealand; brother Tim and Tim’s partner Elise, in Hersham, UK, and nieces, nephews, and grandniece. Kay’s early leaving is an enormous loss for her family, for her many friends and colleagues, and for all those whose lives she touched both directly and indirectly.
Born in Swansea, UK, Kay came to Canada in the 1960’s to continue her education at McMaster University, Hamilton. A strong proponent of equity and accessibility for all people, she devoted her professional life to public service. As a long-time Ontario civil servant, she sought equality for women in employment and society, ran English-as-a-second-language (ESL) and settlement programs for new immigrants and refugees, and promoted childcare and adult literacy. In 1973, as the youngest person to achieve a Director’s position in the Ontario Public Service, Kay became a role model for other young women. Innovative and proactive in all her positions, she opened many doors for many people. Most recently, as Executive Director of the Ontario Association of Youth Employment Centres, she worked to improve the future for young people.
Kay lived her life with dignity, humour and respect for others, and she lived it to the full. A keen theatregoer, jazz lover and supporter of Tafelmusik, she was an avid reader who enjoyed crosswords, knitting and jigsaw puzzles. Although she loved to travel, she took great pleasure in strolling the boardwalk near her Beaches home.
The family will hold a private farewell. A memorial service to celebrate Kay’s life will be held on Thursday, February 21 at 7:00 pm at Sherrin Funeral Home, 873 Kingston Road (416-698-2861). Visitation will start at 6:00 pm on the same date. Donations may be made to The Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care, who looked after her so well, or a charity of your choice.
