George Lloyd

George Lloyd died in Stratford on February 13, 2004, at the age of 83, due to complications relating to Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, also known as Steele Richardson Syndrome, a rare condition related to Parkinson's (the same disease that recently took the life of comedian Dudley Moore).

George was born on May 20, 1920 in Toronto and was raised and educated in Winnipeg, where he attended Robert H. Smith Junior High School and Calvin High School. Always active, George particularly excelled at track and field events, and spent his later years vigorously walking the Bruce Trail and all around Stratford, playing golf and tennis. He joined the RCAF and received his wings in 1941 then flew Hudsons with the RAF, 233 Squadron Costal Command in Gilbraltar. George's love for flying saw him stay in service with the RCAF and RAF until 1964; he never lost his passion for aircraft. Following the war, George participated in a study of cardiovascular disease established by Dr. F.A.L. Matheson at the University of Manitoba and George continued in this research until his death.

George was predeceased by his parents John Wesley and Olive Lloyd (nee Longstaffe) and by his sister Levada and his brother Lawrence. George is sadly missed by his wife Doreen; his son Richard and wife Laura; his granddaughters Alexandra and Emily and his brother David and wife Joan.

George requested that there be no funeral and his remains have been donated to the University of Toronto Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology in the hopes that he can offer some insight to researches and an eventual cure. Instead of a funeral, there will be a ceremony, which usually takes place every third year in June, at St. James cemetery and Crematorium in Toronto. The cremated remains are interred at that time.

A celebration of George's life will be held at the Festival Inn, 1144 Ontario Street, Stratford, Ontario, N5A 6W1 on February 29, 2004 from 2 - 4 p.m. Please join Doreen and George's family in a joyful remembrance of a vibrant man with great character and a lust for life.
