It is with great sorrow that the family of Ross Samuel Preston announces his sudden passing on September 10th, 2003, due to heart complications at Victoria Hospital in London, Ontario. Ross was a loving husband of Marilyn and devoted father of Jennifer and his son-in-law Victor Kushmaniuk. Sisters and brothers in law Sam and Arlene Inglis of Hespeler, Jack and Yvonne Gray of Durham, and Aubrey Brown and the late Ruth Brown of Victoria will all deeply miss Ross. Ross was predeceased by his father Samuel and by his mother Gladys, as well as his in-laws Arthur and Eileen Brown of Holstein, Ontario.
A proud native of the Toronto Beaches, Ross attended Malvern High School. He continued his education at Ryerson, obtaining a degree in business. This was followed by an Honours Bachelor of Arts from York University, and a teacher’s certificate from the Ontario College of Education. Thus began a great career in teaching.
In 1971, Ross’ first teaching job brought him to the History and Economics classes of Saugeen District Secondary School in Port Elgin, Ontario - and there he remained a favourite until his retirement in 1994.
Ross’s integrity, brilliant sense of humour and keen intelligence endeared him to both staff and students alike. After retiring, he and Marilyn enjoyed summers in their little ‘haus’ in “The Bruce”, and winters in Sun City, Florida.
Ross and Marilyn had just recently celebrated thirty-five years of friendship and marriage. Ross’s pride and joy was his daughter Jennifer. It was with much happiness that he walked his daughter down the aisle in September two years ago, and he was extremely pleased to see her begin a new life with her husband, Victor.
All who knew Ross will miss his hearty laugh, extremely biased political opinions, wicked sense of humour and fond appreciation for the good things in life.
Thank you Husband. Father. Friend. Teacher and Colleague. Everyone who remembers you will do so with a smile. Your spirit remains with us, always.
Friends may call at the W. Kent Milroy Port Elgin Chapel, 510 Mill Street, Port Elgin, from 7-9 p.m. on Friday evening, September12th. A Remembrance and a Celebration of Ross’ life will be held on Saturday, September 13th, 2003 at 1 p.m., at Port Elgin United Church, 840 Bruce Street, Port Elgin.
A reception with the family will be held immediately following the service in the Family Activity Centre of the church.
