Jean lost a short, hard battle to cancer and now has gone to join her own mother, Marjorie Raeburn, stepfather, Cecil Raeburn, and her namesake Aunt Jean Book, as well as all of the dogs and cats which she took care of during her life. Mom was a model of perseverance, determination through all the challenges she faced in life from the time she was an infant and was not expected to survive to her first birthday. She worked numerous jobs to "pay the bills," including bookkeeper, expediter for Eaton's, house-cleaning, restaurant owner and operator and home support worker. She lived in a number of communities in Southern Ontario; Burlington, Harristion, Beeton and Toronto Island, but she found her true home in Smithville, where she came to live in 1981. Mom had a wife range of interests and enjoyed the symphony, baseball and the Toronto Blue Jays, hockey, football, bridge, cross-word puzzles and lawn-bowling, for which she had just received her 25 year pin. She was a stalwart member of the Smithville United Church where her grandfather, Lincoln Small, had preached in the 1930's. She practiced self-reliance, but with a selfless willingness to help and never turned down a request during the 22 years she was an elder and the 14 years she was the envelope secretary. Mom will live in the hearts and minds of all the people whose lives she touched during her lifetime, especially her son Dr. John Aveline, Ph.D, daughter-in-law Cathie Cleveland and granddaughter Laurel Marjorie of Vancouver. She now can watch over and be with us all, every day. Matre cum sua, laete et tranquilla.
