CULP, BERNICE: Peacefully, at West Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Grimsby, on Tuesday, January 3, 2006, Bernice Lodema Culp (nee Johnson) of Smithville, in her 86th year. Beloved wife of the late Murray Allan Culp. Loving mother of James Culp and his friend Joan MacDougall of Smithville. Dear sister of Douglas Johnson of Toronto and Ross and Joan Johnson of Cobourg, and sister-in-law of Edith, Erna and Violet. Bernice will also be missed by several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her brothers Elgin, Ralph, Howard, and Ronald and his wife Evelyn. Friends called at the Merritt Funeral Home, 287 Station Street, Smithville on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. The funeral service was held on Friday, January 6, 2006 at 11 am at the Smithville Presbyterian Church, 143 St. Catharine Street (Regional Road/Highway 20), Smithville. Inurnment at Union cemetery , Smithville at a later date. If desired, memorial contributions to the West Lincoln Memorial Auxiliary would be appreciated by the family and can be made through the funeral home.

CZERKES, EUGENE: Peacefully, surrounded by his family on Saturday, April 22, 2006 at his home in Grassie, Eugene Czerkes in his 81st year. Beloved husband of Erna Czerkes (nee Koehres). Loving father of Ed Czerkes. Cherished by his grandchildren Angela, Valerie and Shaun, and great-grandson Tyler. At his request, a private family service was held on Tuesday, April 25, 2006 at Merritt Funeral Home, Smithville with Rev. Dale Massender officating. If desired, memorial contributions to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family and can be made through the funeral home.

Doreen Ethel Ellen Dale
1934 - 2006
DALE, DOREEN: Peacefully, at her home in Smithville on Monday, October 2, 2006, Doreen Ethel Ellen Dale (nee Tayton) in her 72nd year. Beloved wife of Alastair William John Dale. Loving mother of Shane and his wife Gwen of Oakville, and of Suzanne Dale-MacDonald and her husband Derek of Stoney Creek. Cherished by her grandson Brandon Dale. Dear sister of Patricia Merrill and her husband Bill of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, and of Ernest James Tayton and his wife Kay of Sittingbourne, Kent County, England. Predeceased by her parents Victor and Doris Tayton (nee Ranger). A memorial service will be held at the St. Anns Community Church, 5425 Regional Road 69 in St. Anns on Saturday, October 7. Visitation will begin at 10 am and the service will follow at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the St. Anns Community Church or the Juravinski Cancer Centre would be appreciated by the family and can be made through Merritt Funeral Home.

Robert Clayton Dent
1933 - 2006
DENT, ROBERT CLAYTON: After a short but courageous battle with cancer, Bob passed away peacefully at home on Friday, July 28, 2006 in his 74th year. Beloved husband of Hilda (Kooistra), loving father of Charles (Sandra), Fred (Susan), Stan (Melinda), and Robert (Julie). Much loved grandfather of Ashley, Derek, Devon, Rachel, Aaron, Colleen, James and Daniel. Sadly missed by brothers Keith (Alie), Ronald (Carolyn), and Malcolm (Jean) and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by parents Nelson and Ethel Dent of Lowville, and siblings Frances, John, Bert, Evelyn, Douglas and Blanche. Bob retired in 1989 from Stelco Parkdale Works after 33 years of service. The funeral service was held at Merritt Funeral Home, Smithville on Monday, July 31 at 11 am with Rev. Dale Massender officiating. Interment Chapel Hill cemetery. Pallbearers were nephews Larry Dent, Bob Greer and Ross Langford, and grandsons Derek Dent and James and Daniel Laporte. Many thanks to Saint Elizabeth Order of Nurses, especially Kathy Reid, as well as the staff of Paramed, particularly Liz Travis. If desired, memorial donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the West Lincoln Memorial Auxiliary.

Emilia Dinga
1924 - 2006
DINGA, EMILIA: Peacefully, at West Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Grimsby on Friday, January 13, 2006, Emilia Dinga in her 82nd year. Beloved wife of Stephen Dinga for over 61 years. Loving mother of Jon; Bob and Debbie; and of Ann and Murray Bering. Cherished by her granddaughter Tracy, and her grandsons Brian, Robert, Mark, Kevin, Richard and Nicholas. Predeceased by her parents Katerina and John Kutka and her brother Milan Kutka. Working together, Stephen and Emilia farmed at St. Anns since 1944. Friends called at the Merritt Funeral Home, 287 Station Street, Smithville on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. The funeral service was held on Tuesday, January 17, 2006 at 11 am at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, 6441 Smithville Road (Regional Road 614), Smithville. Interment Lane cemetery , St. Anns. If desired, memorial contributions to St. Matthew's Lutheran Church or the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by the family and can be made through the funeral home.

Mary (Mootske) Drenth
1914 - 2006
DRENTH, MARY: At Shalom Manor in Grimsby on Saturday, December 30, 2006, the Lord called home His child Mootske (Mary) Drenth (nee van der Heide), in her 93rd year. Beloved wife of Jerry Drenth for 68 years. Loving mother of Albert and Willy, Peter and Annemarie, Henry and Ruth Anne, Linda and John Rynberk, Bert and Atherton, Theodore and Sandra, and mother-in-law of Joanne Drenth-Van Dyke and her husband Dick. Cherished grandmother of 18 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Also survived by three sisters-in-law in Holland. Predeceased by four brothers, one sister, two brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law all in Holland, son Tom (1989), one granddaughter and one great-granddaughter. Friends may call at the Merritt Funeral Home, 287 Station Street, Smithville on Monday, January 1st from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 2nd, at 11 am, at the Riverside Christian Reformed Church in Wellandport, with interment at Riverside cemetery. EGGINK, BERT: After fighting a long and courageous battle with a rare blood disorder, Bert Eggink was called home to be with his Lord on Sunday, July 16, 2006 in his 54th year; he was surrounded by his loving wife, children, mothers, brothers and sisters and many friends. Loving Husband and best friend of Dorene, and dear father of Erica (gone to be with Jesus), Brad, Christina and Derrick Postma, Tim and Charity; beloved son of Henny and Geert Eggink (gone to be with his Lord), Freda and Bert Bergman (gone to be with his Lord) and beloved grandson of Dora and Peter VanMarrum (gone to be with his Lord). Loving brother of John (gone to be with his Lord) and Jenny of Jarvis, Mary and John of Fort St. John, B.C., Helen and Albert of Hagersville, Harry and Diane of Mount Hope, Gary and Marie of Jarvis, George and Betty of Jarvis, Rita and Ross of Port Dover, Jack and Debbie of Jarvis, John and Karen of Caistor Centre, Anita and Lloyd of Fenwick, and Calvin and Janet of Grimsby. Proud Uncle of 51 nieces and nephews and over 70 great-nieces and great-nephews. The family would like to express thanks to all the nurses and doctors of Henderson and McMaster Hospitals. Visitation will be held at the Wellandport Orthodox Reformed Church (74082 Wellandport Road) on Wednesday, July 19 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A celebration of Bert's life will also be held at Wellandport Orthodox Reformed Church on Thursday, July 20 at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Wellandport Christian School would be greatly appreciated, and can be made through the funeral home.

EMBREY, MICHAEL: Peacefully and after a courageous battle with cancer, at West Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Grimsby on Saturday, February 4, 2006, Michael Gerard Embrey of Lowbanks, in his 62nd year. Dear son of Myrtle Embrey and the late Samuel Embrey. Beloved husband for 38 years of Frances (Fran) Ann Embrey. Loving father of Dianna Embrey, Trish and Rob Geroux, and Chris and Tammy Embrey. Cherished grandfather of Rebecca, Stephani, Robert, Aaron, Michelle, Thomas, Nicholas and Kiesha-Lynn. Dear brother of Sam and his wife Donna, Pat, Ann, Rita and her husband Bob, and Bill and his wife Cheryl. Mike will also be missed by all of his pets. Predeceased by his grandson Christopher. The funeral service was held on Tuesday, February 7, 2006 at 1:30 pm at Merritt Funeral Home, Smithville with Rev. Trevor Jones officiating. Ruth Griffin was the organist. His daughter Dianna and granddaughter Rebecca both spoke of family memories. Interment Lane cemetery , St. Anns. Pallbearers were Mike's good friends Alex Lampman, Guy Muraca and Jamie Baatnes, brother Sam Embrey, brothers-in-law Wayne Berkley and Ken Robins, and grandson Robert Geroux Jr. Flower bearers were his grandchildren Rebecca Geroux, and Stephani, Aaron and Nicholas Embrey. Memorial contributions to the Welland and District Humane Society would be appreciated by the family and can be made through the funeral home.

EMBREY, MYRTLE: passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 19, 2006 at St. Joseph's Villa in Dundas. Beloved wife of the late Sam Embrey Sr. (1978). Loving mother of the late Michael Embrey (Frances), Patrick Embrey, Ann Embrey, Rita Edwards (Bob), Sam Embrey Jr. (Donna), Bill Embrey (Cheryl). Cherished by her grandchildren Dianna Embrey, Trish Geroux (Rob), Chris Embrey (Tammy), Sarah, Nathan and Matthew Edwards, Jim Lampman (Sue), Wade Lampman, Tina Embrey, and 10 great-grandchildren. Also predeceased by her great-grandson Christopher, and her brother and two sisters. The funeral service will be held today, Friday, December 22 at 11 am at St. Martin of Tours Roman Catholic Church, 166 West Street (Regional Road 20), Smithville with interment at the church's adjoining cemetery. Special thanks to Dr. Cano, Ward 5Y at McMaster Hospital and the staff of Willow Grove at St. Joseph's Villa for their care and concern. 1929 - 2006
FANSON, GORDON: Peacefully, after a brief illness, with his family at his side on Monday, February 13, 2006 at West Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Grimsby, Gordon Harry Fanson of Smithville in his 77th year. Beloved husband and best friend of Lois (nee Murdock) for 55 years. Loving father of Janet, Gordon Jr., Shirley Wright and her friend Bryan McMorran, Patricia and her friend Ronald Gottlieb, Barbara Fanson and her husband John Van Kampen, and Sandra and her husband Steven Kovacs. Dear grandfather of Steven (Stacy) Wilson, Jennifer, Angela Wright, Matthew, Rachelle Kovacs, and Kristen Van Kampen, and great-grandfather of Sydny and Tyler Wilson. Gord will also be sadly missed by his sisters-in-law Irene Fanson and Dorothy Fanson. Predeceased by his parents Harry Sr. and Janetta (nee Tweedle), and his brothers Orval, Robert, and Harry Jr. The funeral service was led by Rev. Dale Massender on Friday, February 17, 2006 at 11 am at Merritt Funeral Home, Smithville. Gord's grandchildren Rachelle, Angela and Matthew and daughters Sandra and Shirley gave the readings and Rev. Massender read a life history of Gord, as written by Lois. Daughter Barb spoke of the significant characteristics of her dad as the grandchildren brought forward symbols that reflected those aspects of Gord's life. Ruth Griffin was the organist and accompanied Rev. Massender as he sang Amazing Grace. Interment Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were family members Gordon E. Fanson, Steven Wilson, Harry (Butch) Fanson, Steven Kovacs, John Van Kampen, Bryan McMorran, Ron Gottlieb and Bruce Wright. If desired, memorial contributions to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Smithville United Church would be appreciated by the family and can be made through the funeral home.

Nora Alberta Fossey
1915 - 2006
FOSSEY, NORA: On Monday, March 6, 2006, Nora Alberta Fossey (nee Parker), in her 91st year. Born in Caistor Centre, Ontario, Nora was the beloved wife of the late Frank Fossey (2001). Loving mother of sons Donald, Ralph and Gary. Will be missed by all of her grandchildren, and sister Fern. Predeceased by her sister Gladys, and grandsons Ralph Jr. and David. The funeral service was led by Rev. Dale Massender at Merritt Funeral Home, Smithville on Thursday, March 9, 2006 at 2 pm. Ruth Griffin was the organist. Pallbearers were Gary Fossey, Ralph Fossey, Donald Fossey, Jeffery Fossey, Michael Fossey and Ross Griffin. Interment Waite cemetery , Abingdon. Memorial contributions to The Alzheimer Society would be appreciated by the family and can be made through the funeral home.

Jerry Lorne Freeman
1980 - 2006
FREEMAN, JERRY: Peacefully in his sleep, at his home in Stoney Creek, on Tuesday, December 12, 2006, Jerry Lorne Freeman in his 27th year. Beloved and only son of Jerry and Ella Freeman (nee Heczko). Loved grandson of John Heczko and the late Irene (1987), and Fred Billyard and the late Frances (2006). Jerry participated in the adventures of life with great courage, and touched the hearts of many people. He was a very special person. Jerry will also be sadly missed by his aunts, uncles and cousins. The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, December 20 at 11 am followed by the inurnment at St. Martins' Catholic Church cemetery in Smithville. Cremation has taken place. Loving mother of Tim and Kelly. Cherished grandmother of Michael and his wife Cyndi, Tara, Tyler and Jason, and great-grandmother of Krystle, Bekki, Brandon and Courtney. Dear sister of Louie and Betty Chovance and Tony and Donna Chovance. Predeceased by her parents Rudolf and Maria Chovance, son Michael, brothers John and Bill, and sisters Julie and Amelia. The funeral service was held Monday, May 15 at 2:00 pm at St. Martin of Tours Roman Catholic Church, Smithville, with Father Matthew Pendanathu officiating. The soloist was Jesse Filice, and the organist was Janet Poisson. Interment at the church's adjoining cemetery. Pallbearers were Michael, Tyler, Jason and Tara Giovannetti, Andrew Kitney and Neil McDonald. Beloved wife of the late Frank Green Jr. (January 2, 2005). Loving mother of Debbie and Brent Simpson of Smithville, and of Steve and Diane Green of Beamsville. Cherished grandmother of Jeremy Simpson, Krista Simpson, Simon Green and Megan Green. Dear sister of Jean Bracey of Burlington, Jim and Gail Lockie of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, and dear sister-in-law of Gloria Lockie of Edmonton, Alberta, Trish Lockie of Kitchener, Edna Smith of Caistor Centre, Ada and Don Urquhart and Frances Kinney of Smithville. Dianne will also be missed by many nieces and nephews. Loving mother of Jim and his wife Eleanor, Janet and her husband Brian O'Hara, and George and his wife Melissa. Cherished by her seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
