Robert Newman Smith - 02/02/2003
C.D. BASC Lieutenant/Colonel RCAF (ret'd) passed away at the Perley Rideau Veterans' Health Centre on February 2, 2003. Beloved husband of Lillian Smith (nee Johnston). Loving father of Kimberley Woodman (Stan) of Wolfe Island, Ontario. Bob was born in Whitby Ontario November 27, 1923, the eldest son of Ernest (deceased) and Winnifred Smith. He is also survived by his mother and a brother Ray F. Smith (Bette) of Burks Falls, Ontario and several nieces and nephews. Bob joined the army in 1943. He served time in England and the Netherlands and returned to Canada in 1945 and attended the University of Toronto. Upon graduation he re-enlisted in the air force and spent one year at Aeronautical Engineering School in Aylmer, Ontario. His military career spanned 24 years at various postings in Canada, United States and Europe. After his military career he joined the Department of Supply Services and retired in 1989. Bob was an avid hockey player, curler and golfer. He was a great lover of animals and served on the Board of Directors at the Ottawa-Carleton Humane Society. Bob was also a loyal member of the Nepean Kiwanis Club. The family wishes to thank Doctors Tobin and Bishop and the wonderful, caring staff at the Perley Rideau Veterans' Health Centre. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made to the Perley Rideau Veterans' Health Centre Foundation or the Ottawa Humane Society. Friends may visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street, on Tuesday, February 4, 2003 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel on Wednesday, February 5, 2003 at 1 p.m. Interment to follow at Beechwood cemetery.

Suzanne St-Jacques - 01/31/2003
Born on April 20, 1956 in Timmins, Ontario. Angels and unicorns came to take Suzanne on Wednesday, January 29, 2003. She battled her illness heroically to the very end and then graciously let go to hold hands with the loved ones above. As she sits on the rainbow with her unicorns looking down upon us she is in peace with no more pain and sffering. Suzanne was predeceased by her dad R mi. Suzanne leaves to cherish her memory her loving family: Mom No lla; brothers Richard (Sandra), Michel (Priscilla of Timmins), Gat an, Andr , Roch (Francine)and her only loving sister Lynn (Jacques) all of Gatineau. Suzanne leaves behind her adorable nieces and nephews: Jennifer, Jonathan, Eric, Ashley, Nicolas, Jacob and M lissa, her good friend Pete plus numerous aunts and uncle, cousins and many dear friends. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew her. Family wishes to thank the St. Vincent Hospital 5th floor unit for the compassion, kindness and care given to Suzanne and to all those who shared their "Special gifts" with Suzanne and to Dr. Ren e Prince and her team. In lieu of flowers, donations in Suzanne's memory to the Recreational Therapy of St. Vincent Hospital would be appreciated. According to her wishes their will be no visitation at the Funeral Home. Friends may attend a Funeral Mass in her memory to be held at the Cathedral Basilica, at St. Patrick's Street on Thursday February 6, 2003 at 10:30am.

Frances Elaine "Francie" Starke (Nee Cousens) - 02/03/2003

(Nee Cousens) Peacefully at Island Lodge, Ottawa, on Monday, February 3, 2003 aged 99 years. Beloved wife of the late Andrew D. Starke and loving mother of Andrew Cousens Starke (Christine). Dear grandmother of Ian (Delia), David (Pam) and Scott. Also survived by her brother Elwyn Cousens and sister-in-law Jean Cousens and by nieces Kit, Lynn, Ann and Jean-Francis and nephews Jim, Chip and John and godson David Rogers. We would like to thank all the generous staff of Island Lodge for their superb care of Francie during the years she lived there and most especially during her final weeks. Friends may visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street, Ottawa on Thursday, February 6, 2003 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at St. Bartholomew's Anglican Church, 125 MacKay Street, Ottawa, on Friday, February 7 at 11 a.m. Reception to follow with interment at Beechwood cemetery.

Raj Kumari Talwar - 02/01/2003

Died peacefully at the Ottawa Civic Hospital on January 30, 2003 at the age of 82 years. She is the loving mother of her sons Kanwal "Ken", Ashwani (Anita) and Asha all of Ottawa, her daughters Kiran, Kundal, Kamini and Preety all of India. Beloved grandmother to 18 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers and sisters in Canada and India. Friends may visit at the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 150 Woodroffe Avenue at Richmond Road on Sunday, February 2 from 5 to 8 p.m. The Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel at Pinecrest cemetery , 2500 Baseline Road on Monday, February 3 at 11 a.m.

Father of Sarah ( Paul ), James (Heather ) and Vanessa. Grandfather of Robyn, Owen, Geoffrey, James and Jessica. Memorial donation may be sent to SCO Health Service Foundation, 43 Bruyere Street, Ottawa K1N 5C8 or Hospice at May Court, 114 Cameron Avenue, Ottawa K1S 0X1. Memorial Service at St. Bartholomew's Anglican Church , 125 MacKAy Street on Wednesday, February 12th at 11 a.m. the family would like to thank the nursing staff of the sixth floor of Villa Marguerite for their wonderful care of Bill during these last few years.

Peacefully at the West End Villa on Friday, January 31, 2003 in her 88th year, Lenore McCann, wife for 56 years of the late Gordon Charles Tilley, FCA. Lenore, formerly of Manotick, is survived by her daughter Lynn Marshall (Larry), of Oakville, her son David (Carolyn) of Manotick and grandsons Tom Marshall of Arnprior, Bryan Marshall of Victoria, BC, Greg Tilley of Manotick and Doug Tilley of Kingston. Lenore was the daughter of the late Dave McCann (CFL & Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame) and the late Florence Wilson McCann and step-daughter of the late May Stafford McCann. Lenore is survived by her sister June Steene of Kanata and many nieces and nephews. Friends may visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street on Sunday, February 2 from 1 to 4 p.m. and on Monday from 10 a.m. until Service in the Chapel at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation would be appreciated. Glenn Harvey Toll - 02/05/2003

On February 4, 2003 at the age of 51, Glenn's courageous battle with cancer ended at the Carleton Place Hospital. Glenn was the beloved son of Alma, father of Courtney and Crystal, husband of Barbara and proud grandfather of Kyler and Dawson. Glenn was also survived by his sister, four brothers, nieces and nephews. Friends may visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod St., on Friday from 7 - 9 p.m. A Funeral Ceremony will be held in the Chapel on Saturday, February 8 at 2 p.m. Those wishing may make a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Ivan Radvan Vrana - 01/30/2003

Born June 4, 1930 in Moravska Nova Ves, Czech Republic. passed away peacefully after a lengthy illness January 29, 2003 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. He is mourned by his wife Toni (M.A.) Vrana nee Ross, his children Anna M. Vrana-Godwin, Ivan Ross Vrana and grandchildren Anicka and Ross, as well as his brother Milan Vrana of King City, Ontario. As a tribute to Ivan the family requests donations to the Oncology Fund, c/o the Ottawa Hospital Foundation, 737 Parkdale Avenue, 1st floor, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, K1Y 1J8 in lieu of flowers. We are truly grateful to the Special Oncology Team of 5 East at the Ottawa Hospital General Campus for their outstanding care and compassion. Elinor Grace Welsh (nee Mowry) - 02/12/2003

July 26, 1916 - February 4, 2003. Grace died peacefully at the General Hospital. She is survived by her husband William Welsh, her brother the Reverend Father Richard Mowry, T.S.F., her children Norman (Carole), Gilbert (Patricia), Bill (Beverly), Gordon, Miriam (Carl) and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Predeceased by her infant daughter Gwendolyn and grandson Jeffery. Friends may visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair and McGarry, 315 McLeod Street on Friday, February 14, 2003 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at the Church Of The Ascension, 253 Echo Drive on Saturday, February 15 at 2:30 p.m. Donations to the Humane Society, 101 Champagne Avenue, Ottawa K1S 4P3 would be appreciated. Miles (Mike) Wisenthal - 02/01/2003

In Ottawa, on February 1st, 2003, in his 90th year, peacefully, after a long and full life. He will be lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 67 years, Dorothy (ne Rosenbloom); his two sons and their wives, Jonathan (Christine) and David (Brenda); his four grandchildren Stephen (Jenny), Rosalind (Matt) Lucas and Joshua, and his four great grandchildren, Theo, Archie, Amanda and Duncan. He is survived by his sister Rose Wisenthal Weiner and predeceased by his brother Hyman and his sister Florence. He is fondly remembered by many neices and nephews, friends and colleagues. He was highly respected in the many segments of his career: as a businessman, as a soldier, as an academic, as a civil servant, and as a consultant to the federal government. A funeral service will be held at The Jewish Memorial Chapel, 1771 Cuba Ave, Ottawa on Tues Feb 4 2003 at 10.00 a.m. Interment following in Montreal at Mount Royal Cemetary (Temple Emanu-El section) at 2:00 p.m. Shiva Private.
