Audrey Phoebe Simpson (nee Cooper)
1910 - 2004
Born in Burma on January 8, 1910. Died at St. Lawrence Lodge, Brockville on Saturday, August 21, 2004 in her 95th year. Predeceased by her husband Bud (Stan) in 1973 and sisters Sylvia and Phyllis in England.
Mum was an independent spirit, an adventurer. After living in Burma, she went to boarding school in England and then set off for India to do her nursing training. She returned to England where she did private duty nursing and was responsible for air raid shelters in Croydon during the war. She met and married a Canadian RCSC soldier, Bud Simpson, and then left her homeland as a war bride to travel by boat and train to Brockville with her infant son.
She faced the many challenges of her new life in Canada with determination, perseverance and a "press on" attitude. She enjoyed community activities with Dad at the Rowing Club, the Legion and Militia. She later returned to the workforce as a nurse at the Brockville Psychiatric Hospital.
Mum had a keen mind and enjoyed discussing current events. She was an expert as crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles. She loved flowers and gardening and participated in the Horticultural Society, the Shepherd Centre, Trinity Anglican Church and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. She spent her last years at the Rosedale and St. Lawrence Lodge where she enjoyed the activities and appreciated the care of the staff. Her British traditions were with her to the end - an afternoon cup of tea and a sip of sherry in the evening.
Sadly missed and fondly remembered by her children Howard (Sue) and Maggie, grandchildren Craig (Bev), Paul, Terry (Suzanne), Jessica and Jeremy (Nicole), brother-in-law Bob Simpson and sister Heather Pengelly in England.
A service in remembrance of Mum's life will be held at a later date with details to be announced. Cremation has taken place at Roselawn Crematorium, Maitland and interment will be at a later time in Oakland cemetery. In the care of Irvine Funeral Home and Chapel, 4 James Street East, Brockville.
