Dumont, Gloria nee David
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Gloria Dumont (née David) in Ottawa on May 29, 2009, at the age of 79. Gloria will be dearly missed by her sisters Selma (late Russell Neal), Olga (late Gerard Bouffard), Norma (late Maurice Besner) and Priscilla (Donald Cannan), her brother Roland David (Marjolaine Bélanger), as well as numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends. The family wishes to express its gratitude to the caring staff of Carleton Lodge in Ottawa. A funeral mass will be held at St. Leonard Church in Manotick on June 8, 2009 at 10:00 am. Loving husband of Sylvia Sumner. Predeceased by his wife Esther, the mother of Glen’s sons Ronald (Marian), Douglas and Michael. Proud grandfather of two grandchildren and a cherished great-grandchild. Survived by his two sisters, Violet and Dorothy (Robert), and by many nieces and nephews. Sadly missed by his step children Jennifer (Gregory), Valerie (Laurent) and Paul. Glen will also be missed by his extended family members and friends across Canada. Glen graduated from Mount Royal College, Calgary in Business Administration, he worked for Canada Post for 38 years and in his retirement volunteered with numerous charities including the Kanata Food Cupboard and as a member of the pastoral care group at the Queensway Carleton Hospital and Glen Cairn United Church. The family would like to thank all those who cared for Glen during his illness including the doctors and nurses at the Ottawa General Hospital and Elisabeth Bruyere Continuing Care Facility. Matzinger, Dr. Lucy Dylowna
Died peacefully in her home at the age of 90 years on Thursday, June 4, 2009 after many years of illness, stoically borne. Loving wife of Dr. Karl Matzinger, radiologist, who predeceased her on January 17, 2009 and had cared for her at home. Mother of Dr. Mary Ann Matzinger (Dr. Dan Cameron), Dr. Frederick Matzinger (Jocelyne, nee Brault), and Dr. Dorothy Jane Matzinger. Grandmother of Catherine, Richard, Paul, Elizabeth, and Alexandra. She was born in Czestochowa, Poland, which she fled with her sister Maria and the Red Cross during the Nazi invasion in 1939, to Romania, then France and England. She took refuge in Scotland during the subsequent years and graduated from the School of Medicine, University of Edinburgh, Scotland. She came to Ottawa, Canada in 1948 and worked at the old Ottawa General Hospital, where she met her future husband Karl. Despite her many hardships, she believed life is beautiful, and found joy and sustenance in her family, friends, her adored grandchildren and the beauties of this world. The family wish to thank Priyanga, Anavilla, Myrtle, and Yvonne from Retire-at-Home, Miriam from St. Elizabeth’s, Dr. Tara Tucker from the Bruyere, and family physician Dr. Karen McIntosh who made it possible for her to stay in her home until the end, as she fervently wished. O'Handley, Alexander (Sandy)
Peacefully in hospital on Wednesday, June 3, 2009, in his 90th year. Beloved husband of the late Pat O’Handley (nee Persson) his “dear heart”. Dear father of Sandra (Tony Garnett) of Richmond, Sharon (Richard Hewitt) of Kanata, Gordon of North Bay and Patricia (Ron Beltrame) of Sudbury. Loving grandfather of Jennifer, Michael, Matthew, Laura, Kelly, Christal, Alexander, Nicholas, Daniel and Thomas. Great grandfather of Darius. There was a special place in his heart for his nephew Bobby O’Handley in Glace Bay, NS. Survived by his sister Frances in Glace Bay and predeceased by brothers Angus and John and by sisters Christy, Margaret, Lily, Ella, Goldie and Mary. Sandy was born and raised in Glace Bay, Cape Breton Island. He served his country as a gunner during WWII, moved to Sudbury where he worked as a miner/hoistman at Garson mine until his retirement. He then moved to Ottawa and joined the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires. His lasting legacy to his children and grandchildren was to appreciate the simple things in life, to not speak ill of anyone and to know that we had the abiding love of a good man. In his words you are a rich person if you have a river to canoe on and a forest to walk through. Forever in our hearts, Dear Old Dad. At his request there was no visitation. A private memorial service was held in Ottawa. Fritz, William
Suddenly at the Ottawa Hospital, Civic Campus on Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at the age of 80 years. He leaves his wife Judie Fritz, Ottawa, son Peter and wife Carla Wilkie, Squamish, B.C. and sisters Marnie Cheesman (Hugh), and Beverly Hill (Orlo), all of Washington State. Bill was born Aug. 24, 1928 in Cathlamet, WN and served time in the U.S. Air Force in the Philippines, then returned to Seattle to finish his Ph.D in Geology at the University of Washington. In 1964 he immigrated with his family to Canada as a research geologist with the Geological Survey of Canada, Ottawa. He spent two summers at the Burgess Shale in Yoho National Park, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Since retirement he and Judie spent many summers doing geology in Nevada.
