He was taken from us all too soon, at the age of 75. Born in Radcliffe, Lancashire, he immigrated to Canada with his wife, Jean in 1966. He will be loved forever and missed so dearly by his wife Jean, daughters Jane (Trey), Emma (Alex) and his treasured grand-children Cameron and Thomas. Henwood, Doris Sheena
November 11, 1916 - June 11, 2009
With sadness, Brian Henwood, of Ottawa and Cuba, and his sister Sharon Henwood, of Victoria, advise you of the quiet and peaceful passing of their Mother Sheena last Thursday at home. She is now in the eternal arms of her husband Ernie. In Heaven she also greets her brother Ross Dudley of Cobourg; sister, Vi Mathiesen of Victoria; grandson Todd and countless friends. Mom was a shining example of selflessness and friendship. A proud graduate of the Salvation Army’s Grace Hospital nursing program in the 1930’s, Mom went on to earn her RN with nurses’ alumnae friends, while she was in her 50’s. She did this to show solidarity with working graduate nurses who were not receiving pay equity with their counterparts. They were forced to petition the Ontario College of Nurses for the right to write the Registered Nurse exams, these women set up their own study groups and instructors, before they challenged the difficult exams. They were justifiably proud when their “old girls’” test scores “beat the pants off” those of recently out of university in every category. Ever the ladies, no one gloated when they received an apology from the College of Nurses. Mom and Dad shared a love from when they first met in the 1930’s. Dad was in the regular army and they were the first people given permission to marry, in September 1939, after war was declared. Separated for over six years by the conflict, their marriage endured and flourished until Dad left us in 1980. No one ever took his place; he was the love of her life. In recent months Mom’s health had deteriorated and she remained in the constant pain she had suffered for more than a decade, but she never lost her sense of humour or ability to make a joke, insisting always that other people had greater burdens. She will be missed by many besides us; especially her son-in-law Dennis Dudley who she called “Prince”; her granddaughter Sara (Elliott) and grandson-in-law Phil Elliott, of Calgary, who among many other great memories gave her the blessing of getting to know her beloved “GG” – their son Malcolm – and the precious baby they are expecting soon. Our thanks go out to her friends who sustained her, the support workers who assisted her, and her great doctor who were always there for her. At Mom’s request there will be no funeral service, just a private family interment at Pinecrest cemetery. If you would like to make a contribution in her memory, please consider the Ottawa Heart Institute, CHEO or the Salvation Army, three of Mom’s favourites. Our family always said “I love you” so we say goodbye to Mom/Grandma/GG with love, respect and gratitude that we had her shining spirit with us for so long. We know she is at peace.
