Macdonald, Betty RN
Ottawa Civic Hospital '54
After what she described as a wonderful life, Betty passed away peacefully at 7.30 a.m. Thursday, March 11, 2010 at the Ottawa General Hospital with her family at her side. Born in Pembroke, Ont., Feb. 21, 1932, Elizabeth Agnes Hodgin was the daughter of the late Len and Agnes Hodgin. She is survived by her loving husband of 53 years Ian, of Ottawa; son David and wife Sue, Ottawa; daughter Sheena, Vancouver; son Bruce, Victoria, and grandchildren Matthew and Kayla Macdonald, Ottawa. Among her extended family are sister Jeanne Fraser, Kingston, and brother Graham Hodgin, Petawawa. She was predeceased by her young sister Sue Paterson, Petawawa. Also sadly missing her is her small dog Max. Following graduation in 1954 from Ottawa Civic Hospital, she nursed in Vancouver and in public health in Pembroke before becoming a full-time Mum. A Vancouver resident for several years, she returned to her favourite places in l965, Ottawa, the Ottawa Valley, and the 70-year-old family cottage at Deep River. A kind, warm and caring person, she loved gardens, birds, dogs, long summer days and crisp winters, and lasagna and a glass of red at Capone's, her favourite restaurant. Her travels ranged from every Canadian province - Newfoundland was a winner - to Hawaii and Alaska, much of Europe, and a camel ride in Morocco. A staunch defender of the Canadian medicare system, she said it was one of the things that made her proud to be a Canadian. Betty also said she could not have had better care and treatment from all who looked after her at the cancer wing of the Ottawa General Hospital, and especially her own favourite physician, Dr. Lynsey Bartlett. She bore cancer without fear and in good spirits. An enthusiastic curler, she was a longtime member of the Granite Curling Club. A past president of the Ladies' section, she was a force in the kitchen where she said she loved every minute of contributing to the Granite's cuisine reputation. She was proud and highly appreciative of being made an honorary life member of the Club. Betty cherished the friendships she made at the Granite, whose members are thanked for their kindness and concern shown during her illness. She was fortunate in being fairly active, even curling a little, until a few weeks before she died. A great hockey fan, she worried about the ups-and-downs of the Ottawa Senators but supported them wholeheartedly, seeing a few of their recent games. She enjoyed every televised hour of the 2010 Olympics, cheering for curler Kevin Martin and all the other Canadian athletes. Cremation has taken place and at her wishes her ashes will be scattered this summer on the Ottawa River near her cottage. Visitation will take place at the Westboro Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 403 Richmond Road (at Roosevelt) on Sunday, March 14, 2010 from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm, and all her friends are invited to a following celebration of her life at the Granite Curling Club, 2026 Scott Street, Ottawa, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm Sunday. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to the Ottawa General Hospital cancer unit, the Humane Society, or a charity of your choice.
