The family of Jean announces with great sorrow her passing on Tuesday, September 9, 2003 in her 92nd year. She leaves her daughters, Mary Johnston, Jean Sharpe, Cynthia Galloway, Bernadette Truesdell, Annette Vandermeer; her grandchildren, Kim, Pamela, Paul, Tony, Nyree, Jenny, Roger, Henning and Jeanie; and great grandchildren, Cara, Joey, Victoria, Charlotte, Brodrick and Brandon. Predeceased by her 1st husband John Murphy, her 2nd husband Bill Theorin, her grandson Gregory and granddaughter Belinda, her parents Frank and Ada (Knight) Snow and several brothers and sisters all formerly of Nfld. Jean although blind for many years bore this with great dignity and was noted by all for her friendliness, quick wit and humour. She resided at Starwood Extendicare where she made many friends. Perry, Gordon “Gordie”
Gordon “Gordie” Perry Sr. “Hall of Famer” passed away peacefully at the Hospice at May Court on Friday, September 19th, 2003 . Gordie Perry dearly loved husband of Muriel Taggart, predeceased by wives Jay Perry (Keith) and Betty Thomas. Loving father of Gord Jr. and his wife Phyllis, Lynn (wife of the late John Merkley) and Pat (wife of the late David Murray). Dear “Grampa” of 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Predeceased by a brother Graham and by two sisters Doreen Gillespie and Carol Alleyn. He will be very much missed by Muriel’s large family. Gordie had a wonderful life. Last March he achieved his goal of 100 years. He was a long time employee of the Bank of Canada. With his wonderful smile and warm personality, he had many friends and will be very much missed by the curling community. Gordie was an extraordinary athlete: Past President and Life Member of the Ottawa Curling Club, Past President and Emeritus member and the longest living member of the Governor General’s Curling Club. Member of the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame, Quebec Sports Hall of Fame, Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame, Canadian Football Hall of Fame and the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame. Former Captain of the Montreal Winged Wheelers (predecessor of the Montreal Alouettes) with whom he won the Grey Cup in 1931. He was named Honorary Captain of the 2003 Montreal Alouette Team. PREST, Dr. Victor Kent
B.Sc. (Honours), M Sc., Ph. D. FRSC, Geologist - After a short illness on Friday, September 26, 2003 at the Queensway Carleton Hospital, Nepean, in his 91st year. Beloved husband of Patricia Prest (nee Horder), which he married on the 24th of October 1942. Loving father of Sherry Armstrong and Wayne Prest (Janet). Beloved grandfather of Christy Armstrong (Michael Rasso), Clayton Armstrong, Maureen Prest, Ian Prest and great-grandfather of Jadon Prest-Bodie and Joel Prest-Bodie. Dr. Victor Kent Prest was born in Edmonton, Alberta April 2nd, 1913, the only child of the late John (Jack) Prest and the late Elizabeth Prest (Buckley). He attended the University of Manitoba where he received his B.Sc. (Honours) 1935 and M.Sc. 1936. In 1941 he received his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. During his tenure at “Toronto” he also served as an assistant in both the Geology Department and the Royal Ontario Museum, and later as a Lecturer. He served with the RCNVR 1942-45, in Newfoundland with the rank of Lieutenant. Victor worked as an Assistant for the Manitoba Mines Branch in 1934 and the Geological Survey of Canada in 1935-36. He was Party Chief, Ontario Department on Mines from 1937 to 1940, working in Northern Ontario. In 1941 he was on staff at the Research Laboratory of INCO, Copper Cliff Ontario; Permanent Staff Ontario Department of Mines 1945-1950 and Geological Survey of Canada 1950-1979; (He was chief of the Pleistocene, Engineering and Groundwater Section 1951-62). After retirement Victor undertook limited consulting work before deciding on volunteer glacial research with other retired Survey colleagues. Victor was a Fellow with the Society of Canada; member Geological Association of Canada; Canadian Quaternary Association (awarded 1st W. A. Johnson Medal 1978), for his professional expertise in glacial research; Association Québeois pour l’Etude du Quaternaire (Hon.Member 1987); member, American Quaternary Association; Fellow, Geological Society of America (the prestigious Kirk Bryan Award, 1990 was presented to Arthur S. Dyke and Victor K. Prest for their contribution in bringing “continental” order to an array of regional studies); The distinguished career Award 1993 of the Geology and Geomorphology Division of that Society was presented to Victor by his American colleagues; Fellow, Royal Canadian Geographical Society (Gold Medalist 1995), for his contribution to the understanding of the Canadian landscapes. Victor’s greatest recreational love was curling. He was President of the City View Curling Club 1958; Honorary Governor General’s Curling Club President 1972; Canadian Branch (Royal Caledonia Curling Club, Council of Management 1978-80 and Life Member 1986. With the support of the Ottawa Valley Curling Association, Victor introduced Junior Curling in Eastern Ontario in 1975 and coordinated play with the Canadian Branch in Quebec. He introduced Little Rock Curling in 1983. He organized Junior and Little Rock bonspiels for the OVCA over a period of ten years. Predeceased by her parents Margaret and Edmond Paddon, by her sisters Irene and Olive (Tom), and by her brothers Oswald and Stuart. Survived by her sisters-in-law Joan and Isobel Paddon as well as her nieces and nephews. A graveside service will take place in St. Thomas, Ontario in the spring. Special Nana to Jon and Robert Hazell, Emma and Adam Trottier and Caitlin, Jean-Rene, Guy-Robert and Nicolas Gamache. Dear sister of Bill Large (Linda) of Luton, England. Born in Royton, England in 1935, the girl in blue (Luton Girls Choir) married the man in red (Irish Guards Band) in 1953 and started a wonderful life in Canada that same year. While in Toronto (1953-1969), Marion sang with the Palmer Singers and St Clement’s Anglican Church Choir. Marion was an avid volunteer in her community for her entire life, serving the Girl Guides of Canada, the National Arts Centre Orchestra Association, St. Matthias Church, The Ottawa Regional Cancer Clinic and was co-founder with her husband, Bob, of the Rideau Lakes Cycle Tour. Marion’s many friends will miss her on the golf course, at the bridge table, at the book club and at her dinner table where she loved to entertain. Marion’s compassion and laughter will be greatly missed by every life she touched. Enormous thanks and appreciation to the entire oncology team at the Ottawa Regional Cancer clinic, but especially to Dr. Stan Gertler and Candace Quinn for their excellent care over the last 13 years. Special thanks also to Dr. Hradecky, Dr. Louise Coulombe, Dr. John Seely, nurses Debbie and Kelly, and the Rev. Joan Riding.
