Hagerstown, MD - Matthew F. O'Connell, age 83 of Hagerstown, Maryland, formerly of Albany N. Y., died Saturday, September 15th after a long illness. Matthew was born on January 24, 1918, the son of John J. and Mary T. O'Connell. He was a graduate of Vincentian Institute in Albany, and was in the first graduating class form Siena College in Loudonville, N.Y. He worked for ALCO products, Inc. in Schenectady, NY for many years, then for Worthington Corp. In both Montreal, Canada and Buffalo, NY. He also worked after his retirement in the Finance Office at Maria College in Albany. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII in the Pacific. He was active in Holy Cross Parish in Albany from its beginnings, and was also a volunteer for Mended Hearts and Meals on Wheels. His wife, Ellen M. O'Connell (Tracey) and his sons Matthew F. O'Connell, Jr. and John F. O'Connell predeceased him. Matthew is survived by his children; sons, Kevin O'Connell and wife Chris (Roman) of Horseheads, NY; and Daniel and wife Patti (Marcoccia) of Elmira NY; daughters, Kathleen O'Connell of Hagerstown, MD; Mary Bennett and husband James of Oshawa, Ontario Canada., Ellen Donnelly and husband Patrick of Rockville, MD and daughter-in-law, Linda O'Connell of Manchester, NH.Grandchildren Bridget O'Connell Kurcoba and husband Kris, Matthew and John O'Connell, Maggie O'Connell, Tracey, Kelly and Jennifer Bennett, Kevin, Daniel and Molly Donnelly and Meghan and Christopher O'Connell also survive him. His newborn great grandson is Cloin Matthew Kurcoba. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Rita O'Connell, from Kennebunk, ME and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service was held Tuesday, September 18th at 9:15 a.m. from the McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 N. Allen St., Albany NY thence to Holy Cross Church, Albany, NY, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment St. Agnes cemetery , Menands, NY. Peacefully, at Sunnycrest Retirement Villa, Whitby, on Thursday, September 13. 2001, in his 97th year. Beloved husband of Flossie Evelyn (nee Cornish) for 67 years. Father of Ken and his wife Gerri, and Doug and his wife Margaret, all of Oshawa. Also survived by granddaughter Susan McGuire (Dan) and grandssons Chris (Lisa), Gary (Gail) and Steve (Maureen), and seven great-grandchildren. Son of the late John and Jane Edwards, Rupert was born at Algonquin, Ontario, on July 31, 1905, and educated in Prescott and Ottawa. After residing in New York City for a number of years, he returned to Canada in 1929, where he joined General Motors of Canada Ltd. in Oshawa. He retired in 1967 after 38 years in various financial departments. A long time member of Simcoe Street United Church, Rupert served on the Board of Trustees for many years.
