We say goodbye to a wonderful husband and father, an exceptional human being. Wendell McKeen passed away on December 28, 2005. He will be sorely missed by Polly (nee Martin), his wife of 59 years, by his children Nancy (Darren Campbell), Liz, Wendy, Bill (Nuala Murray) and Kathryn (Terrance Dupuis) and by loving family and many friends. He was predeceased by his father James McKeen, mother Clara Schwerdfager, brothers Gordon (Jean), Harold (Laura) and sister Grace (Fred). He is survived by his brother Earl (Joan) and many nieces and nephews. He left a great bunch of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Paul Hogan, Christine and Emily Maki, Abrah McKeen, Stephanie, Rachel and Conor McKeen, Ryan Mance, Sydney Hogan and Gus McCallum. Born on July 12, 1924, Wendell grew up in the Glebe. He delivered groceries for his father's store and attended Glebe Collegiate Institute. At 16, he went to sea on the Nascopie, peeling potatoes, then again at 17 as a waiter. At 18 he went to war as a wireless air gunner. He married Polly at St. James United Church in the Glebe in 1946, and then began a joyful life in the Royal Canadian Air Force with a large and loving family. They lived at various times in Clinton, Centralia, Takoma, Washington, Winnipeg, Alsace in France and Portage La Prairie. At the age of 44, he retired from the air force to become a Manpower counsellor in Sudbury and Ottawa. He thought family was the most important thing and it showed with every meal he cooked. He had a humour and magnetism that attracted people and he made and kept lifelong friends, including childhood companions, his war time crew and friends from every place he lived and worked.
