formerly of Renfrew and Pembroke, at Ottawa on December 23, 2005 in his 93rd year. Loving husband of the late Ethel Austin for 57 years. Devoted and generous father of Patricia Perron, Austin (Margaret), Ron (Joan), Mary Elizabeth Vecchio (Patrick), Sharon (Bob Part), Murray (Lorna Barker), Catherine Rousselle (Xavier), Brian (Connie) and Rosemary (Gregory McCrea). Affectionately known as Poppy to 15 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild who especially cherish the good times they shared with him at the Hurds Lake cottage. Survived by his brother, Godfrey Gravelle (Leona). Predeceased by parents Gideon and Mae Gravelle and brothers Albert, Owen and Clayton. Fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews. Oscar was born in Pembroke in 1913 and was a respected businessman in retail furniture in Renfrew, Pembroke, Deep River and Petawawa. He loved his work and spent 40 years as the owner of Renfrew Home Furnishings. He was honoured as Renfrew s Businessperson of the Year in 1986. Oscar was active in his community and the lives of his children and grandchildren. He will be dearly missed by all whose lives he touched. Former member of the Renfrew Lions Club, Knights of Columbus (Fourth Degree), St. Francis Xavier Parish, Renfrew, and St. Joseph s Parish, Ottawa. Stephanie Anne (nee Matthews) Harker - 12/23/2005
On Thursday, December 22, 2005, quietly and having just celebrated her 85th birthday. Born and raised in Hereford, England, Stephanie served with distinction in the British Army during World War II. She joined up as a Private, but was chosen for officer training, and rose to the rank of Major. She served in England, India, Ceylon and Burma. She was on the General s staff of the British army in New Delhi and was subsequently promoted to Deputy Chief of Supply for the proposed invasion of Malaya. After the end of hostilities, she remained in Singapore to coordinate the repatriation of the Japanese prisoners of war. When she returned to England, she studied at Girton College, Cambridge. In 1948, newly wed, she immigrated to Ottawa, where she lived happily for the rest of her life. She was very involved in the creation of the new community of Manor Park, one of the earliest post-war suburbs in Canada, and remained an active volunteer to the end. She was predeceased in 1995 by her husband of 47 years, Dr. Peter Harker, and will be sadly missed by her children: Paul and Mary, Jennifer, Angela and Terry Joyce, Rosemary and Robert Race, and her grandchildren: Peter, Alexandra, Graeme and Nigel. A memorial Service will be held at the Church of St. Columba, 24 Sandridge Road, Ottawa on Wednesday, December 28 at 2 p.m. Grateful thanks to the emergency staff at the Montfort Hospital for their excellent care. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Organ Donation & Transplant Association of Canada, or a charity of your choice, would be appreciated.
