Issaacs, Donald Garnet
Don was born in Toronto Ontario in 1931 to Arthur Isaacs and Mildred (O’Connor). While working for a furniture store in Toronto, Don met Lydia Elenko who had recently arrived from Saskatchewan. It wasn’t long before the two were dating and marriage was just around the corner for the young couple. Don was an only child but Lydia came from an immigrant family with many children. Since the couple did not have children of their own, they invested themselves in the families of Lydia’s siblings building relationships and love. For many years they were faithful attenders at the People’s Church. Both Lydia and Don had a firm faith in God’s love, Jesus’ redemptive sacrifice and the work of God’s Spirit in their lives. Their spiritual lives were very important and Don would never hesitate to let you know why he was so positive about the life given to him.Throughout their lives, Don and Lydia were inseparable. They both enjoyed spending time together at their home. Lydia kept their home immaculate, so she would do the housework and the cooking while Don would work on the grass or read in the den. Don appreciated the finer things in life. He would never look for a bargain. He knew what he wanted and so he would invest in quality items that would last. He enjoyed fine suits and would never keep an automobile more than three years. Don had a romance with cars. He loved a new automobile and would savor driving it and keeping it spotless. The Lexus was his car of choice in his later years.Don had a special way of making you feel comfortable in his presence. He was genuinely interested in talking to you and listening to your thoughts. He was a quiet and humble man and was gracious to everyone. He had a wonderful sense of humour and would never let an opportunity for some joking escape him. He had a quick wit and always had a comeback line.
When Lydia passed away in 2010 Don carried on but his zest for life dissipated. Now that he has left us, we mourn his loss but cherish the impact he had on our lives. We celebrate his life and his passing into eternity where we know he will hear the words... “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”
