Routledge, Edward William
Edward William Routledge, age 89, died peacefully at the Uxbridge Cottage Hospital, October 23rd, 2012. Edward, known as Ted to all close to him, considered himself a lucky man. Born in London, England, June 19, 1923, to Eleanor and William Routledge, baby brother to Joan, Ted enjoyed a childhood of sport and the occasional school excursion. With lively gestures and fond smiles, he often recounted these early adventures; the crack of the bat on the cricket pitch, the strength of his gait in a cross country run through Epping forest, the thuds and thrills of a rugger match, the opportunity to visit Germany with Bancroft School. As a boy, Ted loved to move and realized that the true joy in life is the trip, so his love of sport and travel came naturally. In 1941, he joined the RAF and flew to places are far away as Egypt and India. During his military service, Ted was lucky to see the world, and very little action; lucky too, his training placed him in Moncton, where he saw the space and opportunities available in Canada. He married Jean Hamilton in 1950, and in 1953, Ted, Jean, and their son Alan, immigrated to Ontario. Ted and Jean had two more children, Roger and Bruce, and settled to live a good life in small town Richmond Hill. Ted was positive, upstanding, intelligent and honest. He was a long time and decorated volunteer for St John's Ambulance. He read the newspaper everyday, and was a whiz at the cryptic crossword. Ted and his family spent summers camping across the provinces. He spent countless hours in arenas while his sons, and later, his grandchildren played hockey, although Ted never learned to skate. Ted worked for the T.D. bank for 33 years, and when he retired he travelled the world, glad to have a wife willing to explore with him. Looking for the small pleasures of a small town, Ted and Jean moved to Uxbridge in 1993, where he took up golf and curling. Ted saw life with a painter's sensibility and an optimist's eyes; he saw colours wherever he looked and felt fortunate in every day. He found joy in the garden, and in time with his family; he relished a good meal and always had room for pie. He will be missed by wife Jean, and by children Alan and Debbie, Roger and Mel, Bruce and Leena, and by grandchildren Trevor, Lauren, Neil and Jen, Jamie, Matt, Elena, Bryn, and Carlyn, and by brother-in-law Don. We wish him bon voyage and good luck on the next stage of his life's journey. As Ted, who loved dessert, used to say, "To each man his just 'desserts' " -- if that is so, Ted will surely be eating chocolate cake in heaven. Thank you to the Staff of Butternut Manor in Uxbridge, and to staff at Uxbridge Cottage Hospital for their support and kindness. A celebration of Ted's life will take place in Uxbridge in June 2013. Arrangements entrusted to Low and Low Funeral Home, Uxbridge (905) 852-3073. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St.John's Ambulance or the Royal Canadian Legion of Uxbridge.
