MacKinnon, Ian
Peacefully on September 30, 2012 in Port Perry, Ontario at the age of 78. He will be deeply missed by his devoted wife of 54 years, Merilyn, and loving daughter Carolynn. Ian is predeceased by his only son John. Strongly committed to family, Ian was a wonderful brother, brother-in-law, uncle, great and great-great uncle and cousin, and will be fondly remembered by relatives in Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto and in Scotland. Raised in Montreal, Ian began his career in Toronto at the early age of just 16, working in the mailroom in the Halifax Insurance Company. At 22 he moved to Ottawa as a claims adjuster and after one short week, he met his bride-to-be on a blind date. Newly married , he returned to Toronto in 1962 to become the insurer's Ontario Branch Manager. Ian left the Halifax in 1964 to join the Insurance Forms Company ( later called Informco), becoming a Partner, and this is where he spent the remainder of his 51 year career, doing what he loved - working with his customers. Ian was proud to be a Fellow of the Insurance Institute of Canada and act as president of the Insurance Institute of Ontario, founding the Ottawa chapter. Ian's commitment to community was equally strong as he also served as president of the Hillcrest Community Association, the Toronto Chapter of the Progress Club, the Kamaniskeg Lake Association and the Canterbury Commons Community Association. Even in his retirement, Ian worked diligently to bring cardiac care outreach to Port Perry, supported the local hospital and it's doctors and was active in his Church. To know Ian was to know his passion for model railroading and, his infinite curiosity for the world around him, his love of collecting, and his pride in his Scottish heritage. His family would like to thank Drs Mercer and Nussbaum for helping to keep his ticker ticking for such a long time, and the kind and professional staff of the Port Perry Hospital for their care over the years. Family and friends will be received at the Low & Low Funeral Home, 1763 Reach St., Port Perry (905) 985-7331, on Tuesday, October 2, 2012 from 6 pm to 9pm.
