Martyn, Harold

Harold Martyn of Blackstock passed away peacefully on February 22, 2011 a fitting day as it was Lord Baden Powell’s birthday, and Harold was proud to be the first Cub Master in Blackstock. He was born Jan. 28, 1917 in Hampton, Ontario to Edith and Albert Martyn. As the third of eight children, he left home at the age of 14 to work as a water boy for the road crew building Scugog Road, and for several years worked as a farm hand and in lumber camps during the winter. A few years later, while employed by Russell Wright, he met the 16 year old farmer’s daughter next door, Dora Shantz. They courted on a BSA motorcycle until he left in 1941 to defend his country, serving in the Italian campaign, and eventually reaching Holland for the liberation in 1945. He returned to a jubilant meeting at Exhibition Stadium in Toronto in Feb. 1946 and married Dora in May of that same year. He worked for Oshawa Box and Lumber, and Canada Bread before he and Dora ventured into storekeeping at Martyn's Corner Store in Blackstock, May of 1949. In the ensuing years they shared many adventures with their three sons, Ron, Blair and Todd, three daughter-in-laws, Ellie, Jan and Kelly, and eight loved grandchildren and grandchildren-in-laws Amanda, Luke and Keiko, Josh, Julia, Brian, Tim and his fiancé Lara.
Harold was a man of many passions. He had a passion for motorcycles (riding his BMW bolt upright until age 89), the farm in Bethany, square dancing with Dora, traveling, story telling and his family. He also had a passion for foreign places, foreign people and foreign languages. He prided himself, and sometimes embarrassed us all, as he spoke at least two words (and on a good day three!) of many, many languages. Even when he guessed the wrong language for the person, his intentions were always good and he usually found a way to make a positive connection anyway! A good man, he has enriched all our lives, and we will miss him. We are comforted knowing that he is joining his son Blair and granddaughter Amanda. Join us for a memorial service at the Blackstock United Church on Monday, Feb 28th at 11:00 a.m., with a lunch and communal storytelling in his honour to follow. In lieu of flowers, come prepared to share your reflections or memories of Harold, knowing that your story will never be as long as the many he told.
Arrangements entrusted to Low and Low Funeral Home, Port Perry. If you wish memorial donations can be made to Blackstock United Church Fund through Low and Low Funeral Home, Port Perry, Ontario 905 985 7331.
