HAZEL MARY ANDERSON

Hazel Mary Anderson, of Stratton, Ont., passed away Friday, March 13, 1998 in Emo Hospital. She was born in Stratton on Oct. 28, 1904, the daughter of Edward and Sarah Lockhart.
She was married to Roy Anderson on Dec. 19, 1922. Roy and Hazel were the first couple to be married in Stratton who were both born in Stratton.
She was predeceased by her husband, Roy, in 1955; and by three sons, Glenn, Donald, and Allan; daughter, Shirley; her parents; two brothers, George and Jim; three grandchildren, Laurie Dobson, Garth Kliner, and Maureen Begers; and two great-grandchildren, Amanda Marchuk and Greg Godri.
She is survived by her children, Joyce Dobson of California, Ross Anderson (Francise) of Stratton, and Merle Kliner (Robert) of Calgary; daughter-in-law, Leone Anderson of Stratton; 26 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Hazel and Roy retired from farming in 1952 and moved to Fort Frances, where they lived for several years. Hazel then moved back to Stratton, where she lived for the past 25 years, the last eight in Morley Meadowside Manor.
She was a member of the United Church Women, and devoted her life to her family.
The memorial service was held in Stratton United Church on Wednesday, March 18, at 2 p.m., with Rev. John McFarlane officiating.
The organist was her son-in-law, Robert Kliner.
Honourary pallbearers will be her grandsons, Miles Kliner, Ron Dobson, Jim Anderson, Robert Anderson, Ken Anderson, Alex Anderson, Stanley Anderson, Greg Anderson, Doug Anderson, Scott Anderson, Tom Anderson, and Rob Anderson.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the United Church of Stratton or the Women’s Auxiliary of Emo Hospital.
Hazel’s family wish to extend a sincere thank you to doctors and staff at Emo Hospital, Rev. John and Mrs. McFarlane, and friends who visited her in the hospital, and a special thank you to Riet Carnahan of Stratton.

WILLEM ROMYN

Willem "Bill" Romyn, 85, of Stratton, Ont., went to be with his Lord and Saviour on Thursday, March 12, 1998 at Emo Hospital in Emo, Ont.
Bill was born March 23, 1912 in Zwyndrecht, Netherlands. On Oct. 27, 1933, Bill was united in marriage to Christina DenBoer.
In 1950, he and Christina and their nine children moved to Canada and settled in Portage La Prairie, Man. In 1955, they moved to Stratton, where he farmed until he sold the farm in 1970 to his youngest son, Bill.
Bill was an active member of the Emo Christian Reformed Church. He enjoyed reading, gardening, and especially spending time with family, who were first and foremost in his life.
He was predeceased by his parents, Arie and Ellsja Romyn; three sons, Cornelis (1943), Cornelis William (1961), and Gerret (1982); two sisters, Willemiena and Hillegonda; one brother, Eldert; and son-in-law, Terry Laird.
He is survived by his wife of more than 64 years, Christina Romyn of Stratton, Ont.; seven daughters, Elsie (George) Van Dyk of Calgary, Alta., Connie (Dan) Bruinooge of Morinville, Alta.; Audrey (Norman) Dalberg of Escondido, Calif., Tina (John) Douma of Portage La Prairie, Man., Natalie Romyn of Vancouver, B.C., Jacklen Laird of Devon, Alta., and Joanne Romyn of Edmonton, Alta.; two sons, Harry Romyn of Pinewood, Ont., and William Romyn Jr. (Delores) of Stratton, Ont.; 25 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Hendrieka, Nell, and Ellsja, and brother, Pieter, all of the Netherlands; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 14, 1998 at 1:30 p.m. at Emo Christian Reformed Church. Rev. Gerald Van Smeerdyk officiated, with interment in Emo cemetery in Emo.
Pallbearers were Kevin Romyn, Dwaine Romyn, Colin Romyn, William Van Dyk, Robert Davy, and Dan Bruinooge Jr.
In lieu of flowers, in memoriam donations may be made to Christian Reformed World Missions, c/o Emo Christian Reformed Church, Box 209, Emo, Ont., P0W 1E0 or to Christian Blind Mission International, Box 800, Stouffville, Ont., L4N 7Z9.
A special thank you to the nurses and staff of Riverside Health Care Facilities who took such good care of Dad during his illness. Thank you to friends and neighbours for their love and support in our time of need, and to Green Funeral Home for their assistance.

CAMERON TODD OGIER

Cameron Todd Ogier, of 1127 Fourth St. E., Fort Frances, Ont., passed away Friday, March 13, 1998.
He is survived by his parents, Deana and Jason Ogier; one brother; and two sisters.

MONA EVELYN TOMPKINS

Mona Evelyn Tompkins, 90, of Emo, Ont., passed away Saturday, March 14, 1998 at the Emo Hospital in Emo. She was born April 30, 1907 in Emo.
Mrs. Tompkins had lived in Emo all her life. She was a member of the Knox United Church in Emo, and was a member of the Rainbow Rebekah Lodge. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting, and loved her flower garden.
Mona was united in marriage Dec. 30, 1925 to Russell, who predeceased her Oct. 6, 1965. She also was predeceased by her parents, William and Eleanor Draper; and grandson, Gary Tompkins in 1982.
She is survived by one son, Edward G. Tompkins and wife, Helen, of Emo, Ont.; and one daughter, Reta Fay Miller and husband, Harry, of Winnipeg, Man.
Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Russell Miller, John Paul Miller, Lisa Hill, Betty Ann Brown, Edward J. Tompkins, Cindy Lou Jewett, and Rodney L. Tompkins; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 17, 1998 at 1 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances, with Rev. Frances Flook officiating. Interment will take place in Emo cemetery in Emo.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Russell Miller, John Paul Miller, Edward J. Tompkins, and Rodney L. Tompkins.
In memoriam donations may be made to the Emo Hospital.

GORDON LOUIS MARSH

Gordon Louis Marsh, 69, of R.R. #1, Devlin, Ont., passed away suddenly Saturday, March 21, 1998 at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont. He was born Sept. 19, 1928 in Sleeman, Ont. to the late James Robert Marsh and Larena Dorothy Marsh (nee Thompson).
Mr. Marsh had lived most of his life in Northwestern Ontario. He attended school in Winnipeg, Man. He had worked as a lineman and a customer service representative for Ontario Hydro for 39 years, and had been stationed in Dryden, Thunder Bay, Atikokan, and Fort Frances.
He also was the owner/operator with his wife, Edna, of the Voyageur’s Wilderness Lodge on Clearwater Lake.
He was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, canoeing, camping, and cutting wood. He also was a nature lover, and loved feeding the wildlife, including deer, birds, and foxes. He was a jack of all trades, and enjoyed doing carpentry work, electrical, and plumbing jobs. He also was known to be a practical joker at times.
He was a member of the Pistol Club in Atikokan and Fort Frances, and also was a member of the Fort Frances Sportsmen’s Club and the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters.
Above all, his love for his family was most prominent.
Gordon was united in marriage Dec. 27, 1949 to the former Edna Brown, who survives along with their eight children, Dennis and wife, Joanne, of Colorado Springs, Col., Cliff and wife, Roxanne, of Kamloops, B.C., Sherry and husband, Jim George, of Fort Frances, Ont., Penny and husband, Andrew Stilwell, of Winnipeg, Man., Wendy Kuchinski of Winnipeg, Man., Trudy and husband, John Kergon, of Thunder Bay, Ont., Dale and wife, Rena, of Richmond Hill, Ont., and Joanne and husband, Ernie Matthews, of Dryden, Ont.
Also surviving are 17 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters, Mildred and husband, Mike Smyrski, of Winnipeg, Man., and Betty and husband, Alvin Hagarty, of Rainy River, Ont.; one brother, Earl Marsh and wife, Betty, of St. Anne, Man.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, Bob and Larena Marsh; and three brothers, Clifford, Donald, and Douglas.
Memorial services will be held Friday, March 27, 1998 at 11 a.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances, with Rev. Frances Flook officiating.
Friends may visit Thursday evening, March 26, 1998 from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Green Funeral Home.
Honourary pallbearers will be Milhan Cawston, Richard Thompson, Bruce Helliar, Harlan Faragher, Chuck Halverson, and David Bragg.

EGIL ‘ED’ SLETMOEN

Egil "Ed" Sletmoen of Rainycrest Home for the Aged, Fort Frances, Ont., passed away at his residence Wednesday, March 18, 1998 in his 92nd year.
Ed was born in Stange, Norway on April 11, 1906 to Johannes and Johanne Lysbakken. He was raised and educated in Norway, where he learned his trade as a carpenter.
In 1926, he immigrated to Canada with his brother, Ole, and settled in Rainy River District at McInnes Creek. He worked on Lake of the Woods as a carpenter, where he met Ethel Johnson, whom he married Nov. 17, 1934.
For a time during World War II, he and Ethel lived in Fort Frances, later returning to McInnes Creek.
Over the years, he became a well-known carpenter, especially in the west end of the district. Some of the projects he was most proud of included the log cabins he built at Cedar Island, The Ark houseboat and Helliar’s Resort at Nestor Falls, the J.A. Mathieu Estate, the Community Centre in Rainy River, and the Norlund Chapel in Emo.
He also worked on the McInnes Creek Chapel, and built many private homes and cabins throughout the area.
He was a member of the Sons of Norway Lodge in Roseau, Mn.
Ed enjoyed visiting with family, friends, and neighbours, and will long be remembered for his great sense of humour which he never lost. He was soft-spoken, a kind and gentle man, whose kindness and generosity benefitted many, and he was most appreciative of any kindness rendered him by others. He returned to Norway several times to visit his relatives.
He was predeceased by his wife, Ethel, on June 21, 1992; five brothers, Ole (Margaret) and Jorge of Canada, Peder, Yngvar, and Peder J. of Norway; five sisters, Mattea, Jenny, Jorgine, Karin, and Ragnhild of Norway; and nephew, Ivar Sletmoen in Canada.
Ed is survived by his sister, Ragna Aamat (Oddvar); and numerous nieces and nephews in Norway. In Canada, he is survived by nephews, Edwin Sletmoen (Sybil), Robert Sletmoen (Linda), Ronald Johanson (Barb), of Fort Frances, Ont., and John Anderson (Diane), Glenn Anderson (Peggy) of Bergland, Ont.; nieces, Ellen Gaudry (Darryl) of Selkirk, Man., Tanya Daoust (John) of Bergland, Ont., and Judy Kingerski (Don) of Winnipeg, Man.; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Anderson (Art), of Bergland, Ont.; and Rose Johnson of Rainy River, Ont.
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 21, 1998 at 2 p.m. at St. James Anglican Church in Rainy River, Ont. Pastor Robert Ek officiated, with interment in McInnes Creek cemetery in Dawson Township, Ont.
Pallbearers were Edwin Sletmoen, Robert Sletmoen, Ronald Johanson, Glenn Anderson, Jack Dalseg, and Robert Locking.
Honourary pallbearers were Leland Budreau, Delaney Byrnes, Peter Morken, and Elmer Norlund.
In memoriam donations may be made to the McInnes Creek Chapel, c/o Mrs. Vivian Looking, Box 513, Rainy River, Ont., P0W 1L0.

DAY EMIL WISTING

Day Emil Wisting, of Apt. #108-851 Colonization Rd. W., Fort Frances, Ont., passed away Saturday, March 21, 1998.
He is survived by several relatives and friends.

Day "Dag" Wisting, 89, of Flinders Place, Fort Frances, Ont., passed away peacefully at La Verendrye Hospital on Saturday, March 21, 1998.
Day was born March 17, 1909 in Lotorpsbruk, Sweden.
He was predeceased by his parents, Emil and Charlotte Wisting (nee Lindstrom); one brother, Bo Wisting; brother-in-law, Dr. Gunnar Welin; and wife, Inez Mae Wisting (Dec. 6, 1997).
He is survived by one sister, Ena Welin of Bukarrshemmet Saro, Sweden; nieces and nephews, Magnus, Svante, Torsten, and Anna Karin Welin, and others, all of Sweden. He also is survived by good friends, Ralph O'Connor and wife, Debbie, of Fort Frances.
Day was a member of the "Izaak Walton League of America," Defenders of Soil, Woods, Water, and Wildlife (Davenport, Iowa). He also was a member of the Hamilton Lodge #664 (Bettendorf, Iowa) and of the McGregor Sportsman Club.
He worked for the International Association of Bridge, Structural, and Ornamental Iron Workers Local Union #111 for more than 50 years. Day also worked in Fulton, Ill. as a winchman in the 1930s, and for Howard Steel Erecting Co. in the late 1950s.
After leaving Sweden, Day spent most of his life in Pleasant Valley, Iowa with his wife, Inez. They moved to Canada in 1972 and built a cabin in Nestor Falls, Ont. by Lake of the Woods together with their long-time friend, Francis O'Connor, before moving to Fort Frances, where they all spent their last days.
Day enjoyed travelling, and travelled most of the U.S.A. and Canada, overseas to London, Norway, and Ireland, as well as revisiting Sweden in 1937, 1940, 1951, 1952, and 1961. Day always kept a special place in his heart for--and never forgot--his Swedish homeland.
Cremation has taken place, and a private graveside service will be held in Riverview cemetery in Fort Frances at a later date.
