Garth Thomas
The death occurred at Algonquin Grace Hospice, Huntsville on Thursday, August 30, 2012 of long-time local broadcaster Garth Thomas.

Garth arrived in Huntsville on July 1st, 1958 responding to the call of Norris MacKenzie who had just recently opened the airwaves of Muskoka-Parry Sound with the sounds of CKAR radio. Garth Thomas became the voice of radio in Huntsville for the next fifty years, acting as station manager, sports director and for over thirty years as a close associate of Santa Claus. The unique voice of Garth Thomas became the most familiar voice in the community as he made sure every young child in the community who had a successful moment on the sports field heard their name on the radio the next day.

Garth carried this same care and concern for our young athletes to the Huntsville Forester where he became sports editor and later overall editor of Huntsville’s community newspaper.

Through his efforts at both CKAR and the Huntsville Forester, Garth was a tireless promoter of Huntsville and the Districts of Muskoka and Parry Sound. It was only natural that he be appointed general manager of the Muskoka tourism office in Gravenhurst.

Socially Garth Thomas was a presence in the community, serving as President of the Huntsville Rotary Club for a term and was a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship Award, one of Rotary’s highest honors.

Garth Thomas was also a long time member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 232, Huntsville.

In recent years Garth Thomas has been inducted into the Huntsville Sports Hall of Fame as a builder, the Town of Huntsville Parks & recreation committee recently named the sound booth in the Jack Bionda Arena “the Garth Thomas Booth” in recognition of his many hockey and lacrosse broadcasts, and with the arrival of the Winter Games Olympic Torch, Garth Thomas was one of twenty five Huntsville citizens’ honored by the Town of Huntsville.

With his arrival in 1958, Huntsville not only became home to Garth Thomas but became his family as well. Garth Thomas leaves behind all his friends and listeners as his immediate family, he loved you all so very much.

Visitation for Garth Thomas will be at Mitchell Funeral Home 15 High Street, Huntsville on Wednesday September 5th, from 7-9pm

A celebration of the life of Garth Thomas will take place at the Royal Canadian Legion, Huntsville on Thursday, September 6th at 11am.

Donations to Huntsville Fire Department, Huntsville Hospital Foundation or Algonquin Grace Hospice would be appreciated.

John David Burgess
BURGESS, John David ("Dave") of Bella Lake, passed away peacefully at Algonquin Grace Hospice in Huntsville, Ontario, on Wednesday October 7th, 2015, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 73.

David was born in Toronto on November 9th, 1941, to the late Helen Katherine and Stewart Lossing Burgess. He grew up in Leaside and on Bella Lake, where his father built one of the area's first cottages in 1955.

David attended the University of Toronto and graduated in 1964 with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Electrical Engineering. It was during these years he met andmarried the love of his life, Virginia ("Ginny") Jacuzzi. His professional life spanned a multitude of endeavors from engineering, founding and running a successful manufacturing company, to business consulting in his later years.

David and Ginny raised four children in Toronto, Loretto, and at Bella Lake. Despite his busy career, David always made time for his family, whether it was teaching his kids how to ski, fire a shotgun or paddle a canoe.

David was a man of principles and stood up for what he believed in. He gave generously to the community and was actively involved in many business, professional and volunteer activities throughout his life.

Always the consummate host, David loved to entertain friends and family at parties with stories of past misadventures (not to mention the odd cannon firing). But his real passion was his Muskoka property. David could usually be found in the "back 40", exploring, building trails and maintaining the land.

David is survived by his loving wife, Ginny, and their four children, Cynthia of Oakville, Christine (Mark) Jany of St. Catharines, Jennifer (Kerry Fodie) of Sechelt, BC, and John David Jr. (Veronique) of St. Catharines ; sisters Barbara (Barry) Christie of Cranbrook, BC, and Wendy (Rob Fraser) of Toronto, brother William (Marie) of Agassiz, BC; and grandchildren Laura and Katie Jany, Jake and James Burgess.

A memorial service for David will be held on Saturday October 24th, 2015, at 1 pm at Trinity United Church, 33 Main Street East, Huntsville. A reception will follow at Partner's Hall of the Algonquin Theatre (beide the church).

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Algonquin Grace Hospice for their care and comfort in the final days of David's illness. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Algonquin Grace Hospice or RVH Foundation, Simcoe Muskoka Cancer Centre.

Fred Midgley
passed away suddenly but peacefully on Monday, October 5, 2015 at Huntsville Hospital, surrounded by the love of his family.

Son of the late Fred and Emilie (Hall) Midgley. Predeceased by his sister Pat Midgley. Devoted Husband of Dana Page. Loving and caring father of his children: Cheryl and her husband Andrew Darlington; Leslie and her fiancé Jeff Lamb; Douglas and his partner Raine French. Grandfather to Matt, Ali and Tullsi.

Dana:

A very bright boy from Lawrence Park,

blithely set out on life’s walk:
For a job at seventeen

he was most keen.
Ma Bell gave work to this boy

and he found it a joy.
Selling Chung King and Carnation Milk

to all those grocers was just his ilk.
Sales Manager for Polaroid he was my boss,

when he left for Ampex ‘twas a loss.
Owning JPS in Thornhill,

Toyota and Jaguar thought he fit the bill.
Then, the successful young man from Lawrence Park

bought a golf course on a lark.
He retired at forty-five

assuming he could survive.
Over the years so many women he caught,

‘tis a wonder he wasn’t shot.
He made it all the way to seventy eight’

when the big boy walked out and closed the gate.

Cheryl: Although he may have been “Fast Freddie” to others, to us he was always our Dad. He was handsome and smart and cool. And behind that cool façade was a heart of mush. He may not have said it often, but we always knew that he loved us and was proud. We always knew that whatever we asked of him, he’d be there. Something as simple as painting a room together will now always be treasured. If only to have one more day to tell him how much he will be missed and meant to us. Thank you for being our Dad.

Leslie: His sense of bravado entered the room before he did. He was strong and bold and witty. A man, a mentor, and a wonderful grandfather who never held back what he thought to make sure we had nothing but the best. He taught me that the relationships can only grow deeper and stronger with age and that family is the most important one of all. A tough shell that held the softest of interiors, his heart was always on his sleeve. He taught me never to look back (unless to lauh at myself for my mistakes) but to hold my head up high as he always did, even to the end. Those blue eyes were one of a kind and I will miss them each and every day. I know he was proud of his children, because it shone in those blue eyes.

Dana: True to his character he left nothing undone or unsaid. He did it his way, and in his words; “I have no regrets.” He was much loved and will forever be missed.

He was a hard-worker and some of his jobs included travelling with one of the carnivals and working for Wright's Taxi and Hubble's Mill but for more than 25 years he was a custodian for the Board of Education. Lots of the Huntsville Public School students will remember years of enjoying the skating rink that he made and maintained on his own time. He also took pride in taking care of the maintenance for the owners of several local homes.

Dad enjoyed fishing, playing Bingo, re-finishing wood furniture and watching the Maple Leafs and the Blue Jays. Dad was very proud of his family and their accomplishments. He will be sadly missed.

We wish to thank not only the many doctors, nurses and caregivers but everyone who was involved in Dad's care over the last two years, including the behind-the-scenes workers within reception, dietary, cleaning, activities, administration, etc. Special thanks to Rogers Cove, Country Moments and Muskoka Landing. Mark touched the hearts of so many in the world, simply by the way he lived. We loved and admired his compassion for all people, his fierce love of animals, his interest and knowledge of all things “sports” and “history” related, his Joie de Vivre and his ability to always make us laugh.

Mark lived passionately;

He experienced life adventurously;

He loved us completely;

And he fought so hard to be well again, oh so bravely.

Mark made the world a better place.

Sadly, Mark passed away on August 13, 2015 in the comfort of his home.

Mark was surrounded by family including his wife Carrie Campbell, his children Sam Reid, Alex Reid and Josh Campbell-Kelman, his parents Paul and Liz Reid, his siblings Paula Harrell (Brian Harrell), Barry Reid and Michael Reid and his first wife Dayna Reid.

Offering much love and support always were his nieces and nephews Fabio Guglielmi, Jason Harrell, Jordan Harrell, Emmerson Reid, Nicholas Reid and Michaela Bohn Reid. In so many ways Mark’s friends and extended family brought him comfort and love as well.

Please join us in celebrating Mark’s life on Sunday, August 30, 2015 from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the Muskoka Room at the Mark O’Meara Club House.

If you wish to make a donation in Mark’s honour, please do so either to the RVH Cancer Centre or by sponsoring Alex Reid, Dayna Reid, Carrie Campbell or the team “Cancer Crusaders” on One Walk, taking place September 12, 2015, benefitting Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, which Carrie, Alex and Dayna will walk in Mark’s honour.
