January 18, 1919 - January 16, 2004
On Friday, January 16, 2004 at the General Hospital in Hamilton, Father Joseph Bellan, c.s., passed away. Fr. Joseph was born January 18, 1919 in Azergrande (Padova) Italy. Fr. Joseph entered the seminary of the Missionaries of St. Charles/Scalabrinians as a teenager in Bassano del Grappa (Vicenza), Italy and he became a professed member of the religious community on October 4, 1936. Fr. Joseph completed his studies as a seminarian in Italy and he was ordained to the priesthood on September 6, 1942 in Bassano del Grappa, Italy. In time he was sent by his religious community to serve the Italian immigrants in North America. From 1946 – 1985 Fr. Joseph served as associate pastor and pastor of a number of parishes in the United States and he even served for a time being as chaplain of the SS Homeric. In 1985 he came to Hamilton to serve as pastor of the Church of St. Anthony of Padua. While at St. Anthony’s he celebrated his 50th anniversary of priestly ordination in 1992. After stepping down as pastor of St. Anthony in 1992, Fr. Joseph took up residence in All Souls Parish in Hamilton. Even as a retired priest, Fr. Joseph continued to serve the Italian community of Hamilton with love and zeal. He will be sadly missed by the immediate members of his family, his brothers, Mario and Cento, and his sisters Cici, Teresa and numerous nieces and nephews in Italy. He will also be sadly missed by his religious family, the Missionaries of St. Charles/Scalabrinians and by the Italian community of Hamilton which he came to know and love. Fr.
