Harvey Willoughby was a pioneer in three fields in Sault Ste. Marie: labour, social democratic politics and credit unions. During nearly 44 years of employment at Algoma Steel, Harvey was an active participant in union affairs. He worked his way from department delegate to Financial Secretary of Local 2251, United Steelworkers of America, with stops along the way as chair of several committees. Twice Harvey carried the CCF banner in provincial elections. He first ran in 1955. The following year he finished a close second. Mr. Willoughby's belief in the underlying philosphy of employee credit unions became a life-long cause. He saw his dream evolve from little more than an idea in 1946 to the successful Algoma Steelworkers Credit Union. Harvey was involved from the outset. He attended meetings where he explained the credit union concept to his fellow employees and, once the credit union was operational, he served as its president from 1951 until 1977. During this period, he also served a six-year term as a director of the Credit Union League of Ontario.
