Dr. Derek York
August 12, 1936 - August 9, 2007
Passed peacefully at the age of 70, in his family's loving care at Huronia District Hospital, Thursday August 9th 2007. He wil be very sadly missed by his wife Lydia, son Link and partner Lisa, his sister Margaret and brother Alan, nephews Richard and Nigel, nieces Linda and Coral, and sister-in-law Monica, niece Dessa and nephew Stefan...and by the many, dear friends, colleagues and students that Derek touched throughout the course of his remarkable career and life. He was a world renowned scientist, educator, author, columnist...and of course, sports fanatic! After graduating from University College, Oxford, Derek was invited to The University of Toronto in 1960, eventually becoming Chairman of the Physics Department. Derek was also named a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, appointed the J. Tuzo Wilson Professor of Geophysics, was Foreign Principal Investigator for NASA, a popular Columnist for The Globe & Mail, an author of several successful books and in 2005 was the recipient of the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award by The Canadian Association of Physicists. Yet knowing Derek, he would probably have counted the handful of victories of his Geophysics soccer team over arch- rivals Geology among his most cherished achievements. Derek was a truly wonderful, inspiring and devoted Husband and Dad who traveled the world (and Go Home Lake!) with Lydia and Link, on many great adventures. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the team at Sunnybrook, in particular, Dr. Scott Berry, and R.N. Mary Jamieson for their wonderful dedication, care and support for Derek through his battle with prostate cancer. Derek's unique and indomitable spirit continues to shine through all who knew him. He will be greatly, deeply missed. At A later date, there will be a celebration of Derek's life, as well as the launch of a unique on-line initiative which will continue the spirit of Derek's passion to communicate and inspire through the exchange of ideas. Arrangements entrusted to the Nicholls Funeral Home, Midland.

Mrs. Florence Amy Long
August 4, 1923 - August 8, 2007
Mrs. Florence Amy Long (nee McLeod) of Hogarth Riverview Manor and formerly of East Amelia Street passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, August 14, 2007 at the age of 84. Born on August 4, 1923, she was the second oldest daughter of the late John and Florence McLeod. Mom attended Isabella Street School and The Vocational High School (Selkirk). Mom’s career started as a welder at Canada Car making Hawker Hurricanes for the war effort. After the end of the war, Mom went to work at the Dominion Bank of Canada and later the Toronto Dominion Bank. Mom met the love of her life, Lorne, and they married on September 26, 1949. Together they built a house and a home on Amelia Street in Westfort where mom took a break from work to be home with her children. She then returned to the Toronto Dominion Bank in Westfort, retiring in 1985. She was a familiar face at the bank for many years, always a friendly smile and welcoming hello to all she dealt with. Mom enjoyed her family and home life, filling the house with the wonderful aromas of homemade bread and roast beef suppers on Sundays. Her homemade buns were famous in our neighborhood and were often requested by the boys at the fire hall in Dad’s platoon and for numerous neighborhood bridal showers. Nana loved music and could often be heard humming along with Lawrence Welk, Don Messer or Tommy Hunter. Mom always had a great sense of humor and was quick to respond with a one liner to Dad. Her sense of wit was as sharp as a tack and her laughter was often heard through the house. Mom is survived by her four children, Barry; David and wife Beverly and their children Jennifer and Lindsey; Deborah Wyer and her husband Tom and their children Christopher, Alyssa and Leanna (Kenora, presently here); and Lori-Ann Vanhapelto and her husband Mika and their sons Bradley and Shaun. Also surviving are her sisters-in-law Norma Nesbitt (Calgary) and Dooley Brown, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Lorne, on March 23, 2007; her parents John and Florence McLeod; sisters Dimelo Lloyd and Nancy Smith and brother Walter McLeod. Mom’s main focus was always her husband and family, constantly a source of love and support for us all. Her seven grandchildren were her pride and joy and she was happiest when we were all together. She slipped away peacefully from us to join her beloved husband Lorne – we know now they are united once again, as it should be. Rest now together, until we meet again. The Family will welcome friends and family at Jenkens Funeral Home on Thursday, August 16 (tonight) from 7 – 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 207 South Brodie Street, at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 17 with Rev. Bert Vancook officiating. Cremation will follow with a private family interment at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer Society would be greatly appreciated.
