Roger Chevrier, 68

Roger Romeo Chevrier, 68, retired supervisor of facilities for the City of Brockville, died of lymphoma September 3, 2002 at Kingston General Hospital, surrounded by his family. He was well known in sports in Brockville and excelled as a coach.

Born February 18, 1934, in Montreal, he was the son of Anaclet Chevrier and the former Hermine Rochon. He attended St. Francis School and Brockville Collegiate Institute in Brockville and continued to further his education by taking many courses at St. Lawrence College and Guelph University.

He married Madeline Poole, a registered nurse, on July 17, 1954.

His first job after finishing school was at the Phillips Cables plant in Brockville. Then he started working at the Singer Sewing Machine store in Brockville. His employer at the store was a hockey referee and fired Mr. Chevrier's interest in refereeing. He refereed in the Ontario Hockey League for several years.

In 1963, the Singer company transferred him to Saint John, N.B., to manage its store there. While working there he played football.

He operated a sewing machine company for two years in Moncton, N.B. Because of his fluency in both English and French, he was asked by Permanent Concrete if he would manage its ready-mix concrete plant there. This he did successfully, although he had had no experience in that field. While in Moncton, he played semi-pro hockey for the Moncton Hawks.

In 1969 he returned to Brockville but shortly after that he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease and spent some time battling the disease and recuperating. During this time he became a rink rat at Brockville arenas and it wasn't long before he was asked to manage the rinks operated by the City of Brockville. By the time he retired, he was supervisor of facilities at the Memorial Centre and the Centennial Youth Arena.

Mr. Chevrier was a charter member of the Kinsmen Club of Brockville and served as president and deputy governor. He was past president of the Ottawa District Minor Hockey Association. He belonged to the Brockville Yacht Club and enjoyed many excursions on the river, and he enjoyed participating in curling bonspiels in wintertime. He also loved to fish and belonged to the Olsena Fishing Club at the time of his death.

He had his private pilot's licence and loved to go to the various fly-in breakfasts with his wife. They also took a couple of Caribbean cruises. He was membership chair of the Eager Beaver Camping club.

In 1991 he bought a trailer in Florida and he and his wife spent 10 winters in the Naples area. He coached young Americans to play Canada's sport, first through roller blade hockey and then through ice hockey when the arena was built. For two years he brought the boys to four championships.

He was an avid golfer and was proud of many golf and shuffleboard trophies he had won. He also became an excellent wood carver and had many ducks and birds to display.

Friends and acquaintances, in letters of condolence, commented on his energy and enthusiasm and the fact he was never a watcher but a doer, and whatever he did, he did well.

Mr. Chevrier is survived by his wife, Madeline, and three of their four children: Michael and wife Tammy, Daniel and wife Linda and Tony and wife Dawn Marie. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Tommy, Curtis, Cory, Rebecca and Olivia, and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, son Timothy and brother Rene.

The funeral was held in the chapel of the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, on September 7, with Rev. David Moran officiating. Eulogies were given by Barry Miller and Dan Chevrier. Members of the Leeds and Grenville EMS formed an honour guard.

The pallbearers were grandsons Curtis, Cory and Tommy, nephews Jimmy and Allan, and close friend Bill Purbrick. Honorary pallbearers were Art Flanders, Karl Van Brunt, Bob McQuiggan, Gus Mylks, Bob Lawson and Aaron Scott.

The burial service was held September 14 at the new Rockport Cemetery.
