Anne Lynch, 85

Brockville native Anne Chaffey Lynch, 85, a founder of the Brockville Operatic Society and a retired registered nurse, died July 26, 2002 at St. Vincent de Paul Hospital. She had been in indifferent health for many years and was ill the past two years with heart disease.

She was born in Brockville August 17, 1916 to Ira C. McClean and the former Bessie Gates and attended public school here. Then she lived in Linden, Ont. and attended high school in Brantford.

She graduated from Toronto General Hospital School of Nursing as a registered nurse and moved to Kirkland Lake to work. There she met Dr. Theodore J. Lynch, whom she married June 1, 1939 in Linden. They moved to Malartic, Que., where her husband was a mine doctor.

During the Second World War she lived in Ajax, where her husband was the medical director for a munitions plant and she was very active as his assistant. After the war they returned to Malartic and in 1949 moved to Brockville, where her husband opened a medical practice.

Mrs. Lynch had a trained contralto voice and sang on CBC Radio in Toronto while studying for her nursing degree. After moving to Brockville, she sang as a soloist for many years.

She was also a founding member of the Brockville Operatic Society and sang in many of its productions over the years.

She was a member of the Power Squadron and always had a boat. She enjoyed boating, fishing and swimming.

She identified with St. Peter's Anglican Church, Brockville.

Mrs. Lynch is survived by her two sons, Michael M. Lynch and wife Susan of Toronto and Peter J. Lynch and wife Lesley of Brockville, grandchildren Caroline Fitzgerald and Paul, Stephen, Jennifer and Michael T. Lynch, great-grandchildren Lauren and Jenna Anne Fitzgerald, and nephews John, Bill and Rob Stewart.

She was predeceased by her husband Theodore Lynch and her sister Bessie Stewart.

The funeral was held in the chapel of the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, on July 30 and burial followed at Oakland Cemetery.

The pallbearers were Michael M., Peter J., Stephen and Michael T. Lynch, Richard Thom and Adam McMullen.

Memorial donations were directed to Hospice of Providence Palliative Care and the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Isla Smyth, 83

IROQUOIS -- Isla Pearl Smyth, 83, former owner of Smyth's Apple Orchard, died August 13, 2002 at Dundas Manor Nursing Home, Winchester.

She was born October 24, 1918 in Williamsburg Township to Carman Barkley and the former Isabelle Elliott. She lived all her life in the Iroquois area.

On June 17, 1942, she married Malcolm Smyth at Boucks Hill.

In addition to her work at the apple orchard, Mrs. Smyth was a member of the Matilda Women's Institute, Matilda Rebekah Lodge No. 342 and the Iroquois Golf Club. She identified with Iroquois United Church.

She is survived by her husband Malcolm and three children, Cheryl Thompson and husband Gerry of Morrisburg, Sandra Beckstead and husband Paul of RR 1, Iroquois, and Cindy Shaver and husband Robbie of Iroquois. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Daryl, Crystal, Dean, Leanne and Rhonda; two great-grandchildren, Kaileigh and Madison; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents and a sister, Eileen Casselman.

A private family service was held at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Iroquois, on August 15, with Rev. Dolly Dikens officiating. Burial followed at Dundela Cemetery.

The pallbearers were John Simpson, Dean Beckstead, Gerald Thompson and Paul Beckstead.

Memorial donations to the Alzheimer Society or Dundas Manor will be gratefully acknowledged by the family.

Ernie Boulton, 80

Ernest Elton "Ernie" Boulton, 80, died August 5, 2002 at St. Lawrence Lodge.

He was born February 11, 1922 in Brockville to Abe Boulton and the former Ethel Jane "Jennie" King. He attended Hallecks Public School.

On July 1, 1961, he married Geraldine Phyllis "Gerry" Birtch in Brockville and after that he lived on the family homestead in the Long Beach area.

He worked for the Department of Highways in road maintenance for 26 years.

He attended St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, Lyn. He loved to garden, hunt and play dominoes. He also enjoyed taking camping trips as far as the British Columbia coast and in later years at Sudbury, Renfrew and Golden.

Mr. Boulton is survived by his brother Donald Boulton and wife Irene of Brockville, sister-in-law Isobel Boulton of Sudbury, several other brothers- and sisters-in-law, and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife on September 11, 1984, brothers Leslie and Albert and a sister Irene Salter.

Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, where on August 9 the funeral was held with Rev. Faun Harriman officiating. Burial followed at New Dublin Cemetery.

The pallbearers were Wayne Scott, James Haley, Hubert Birtch, Wayne Boulton, Jack Corrigan and Doug Hutchison.

Memorial donations were directed to the Canadian Diabetes Association and the Mary Jane Hawkins Foundation at St. Lawrence Lodge.

Evelyn Watt, 64

Evelyn Frances Watt, 64, of Johnstown, died of a massive heart attack at her home on August 12, 2002. She had been ill for some time with multiple sclerosis.

Born September 24, 1937 in Ottawa, she was the daughter of Edward Barber and the former Frances McKenzie. She grew up in Ottawa and North Gower and attended school in North Gower.

She worked briefly in Toronto before her marriage to Elmer Simzer. They had four children.

She worked at the Black and Decker plant in Brockville for several years, retiring around 1988.

On August 3, 1989 she married John Patrick "Pat" Watt, in Prescott. She lived in Prescott until she and her husband sold their house and moved to Johnstown.

She loved flowers and gardening, cooking, sewing and most of all having her family around her.

She is survived by her husband Pat Watt, sons Kenny Simzer of Prescott and Hilton Simzer and wife Kim of Kingston, daughters Debbie Simzer and Brenda Simzer, and four grandchildren, Nicolle, Samantha, Natasha and Courtney, and a great-granddaugter, Summer-Dawn.

Also surviving are her brother Larry Barber of Oxford Station and two sisters, Shirley Rayvals of Johnstown and Fay Taylor of Moosejaw, Sask., and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents and brothers Donald "Sonny" Barber and Edward "Eddie" Barber.

Irvine Funeral Home, Brockville, handled funeral arrangements. A cemetery service was held August 16 at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Maitland, with Father Claude Delorme officiating.

Memorial donations were made to the MS Society (multiple sclerosis).

Hilda Clements, 73

Hilda Frances Clements, 73, formerly of Brockville, died August 12, 2002 at Brockville General Hospital. She had been a resident of Maple View Lodge, Athens.

Born September 7, 1928 in Marmora, Ont., she was the daughter of Percy Finley and the former Ida Amelia Williamson. She was raised and educated in Brockville, and married Alfred Reginald Clements on September 7, 1946, in Prescott.

She was a production worker at Automatic Electric in Brockville for many years, retiring 12 years ago. She belonged to the company's Telephone Pioneers volunteer service group.

She identified with the Anglican Church. One of her interests was going camping. She also enjoyed spending time with her family.

She is survived by one son, Thomas Arthur Clements and wife Sheila of Athens, and four daughters, Betty Magocs of Prescott, Pat Jackett and husband Bill of Brockville, Dianne Robertson and husband Sheldon of Smiths Falls and Carol Ballantyne and husband Bruce of Brockville.

Also surviving is daughter-in-law Betty Clements of Kemptville, 16 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, brother Leonard Finley and wife Ruby of Kingston and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, husband and one son, Reg Clements.

Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, where on August 15 the funeral was held, with Canon Doug Burns officiating. Burial followed at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Maitland.

The pallbearers were Dave Cherry, Patti Jackett, Erin McKay-Clements, Jason Ballantyne, Kevin Ballantyne and Rich Bennett.

The honorary pallbearer was Brent Guilboard.

Memorial donations tothe Canadian Cancer Society and the MS Society (multiple sclerosis) will be gratefully acknowledged by the family.
