Edna Alberta Roddick, whose hands were always busy with gardening, quilting, baking and sewing, died of heart failure November 22, 2002 at Sherwood Park Manor after a year-and-a-half long illness. She was 92.
She was born June 20, 1910, at Forfar to George Adrain and Annie Blanchard, and was raised and educated in the Soperton and Lyndhurst areas. She married Charles Roddick in Lombardy in 1927. The couple farmed in the Junetown area before moving to Brockville in the early 1940s.
The Roddicks lived on Ormond Street for 40 years and later on Ann Street. Mrs. Roddick had been a resident of Sherwood Park Manor for two years.
She was a homemaker and retired from her job as a seamstress at Brockville Psychiatric Hospital in 1975. She also worked as a seamstress at Percival's and Craig's.
Mrs. Roddick was affiliated with St. John's United Church.
She enjoyed growing flowers and dressmaking and made many quilts and baked bread and rolls for her family. She enjoyed traveling to the east coast and Florida.
Mrs. Roddick is survived by her children Ronald of Golden Lake and Howard and Vera Gardner (Glenn), both of Brockville, a sister, Ella Noffke of Brockville, sister-in-law Beliah White and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, husband, an infant daughter, Jennifer, sister Violet Wilsie and brothers Earl and Byron Adrain.
The funeral was in the chapel of the Barclay Funeral Home November 26 with Rev. Myra Garvin of St. John's United Church officiating. Interment was at Oakland Cemetery.
Memorial donations were directed to St. John's United Church and Sherwood Park Manor.
Floyd Greer, 68
PRESCOTT -- Floyd Russel Greer, 68, of RR 1, Brockville, died January 5, 2003 at Brockville General Hospital.
He was born January 26, 1934, at North Augusta, the son of Wellington Greer and the former Eleanor Miess.
He was employed as a factory worker at Canada Starch in Cardinal.
He spent most of his spare time working on cars, visiting friends at the mall and enjoying coffee and a newspaper at Tim Hortons. He also enjoyed hunting, bingo, walking his dog Snappy and spending time with his family.
Mr. Greer is survived by his wife, the former Irene Seeley; son Richard and wife Gwen, daughter Brenda Greer, and grandchildren Sarah and Jenna. Also surviving are his brothers Earl and wife Freda and Roy Greer, several nieces and nephews and close friends Egbert and Judy.
He was predeceased by his parents, brothers Gordon and Eric Greer, and sisters Dorothy Gardiner Burns and Grace Baker.
Friends called at the Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott, before the funeral there on January 8, at which Rev. Blair Paterson officiated. Cremation was arranged.
Memorial donations to the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario were gratefully acknowledged by the family.
Edith Williams, 92
LANSDOWNE -- Edith Williams, 92, of RR 1, Lansdowne, died of pneumonia January 8, 2003 at her home after an illness lasting two months.
She was born Lula Edith Chisamore on July 31, 1910, in Junetown, the daughter of Alexander Chisamore and the former Mary Jane Nowlan. She was raised and educated in Front of Yonge and Front of Escott townships.
On November 28, 1931, she married Roscoe Williams in Brockville. She was mainly a housewife and mother, but during the Second World War she worked in the aluminum plant in Kingston and later she did housework and cared for numerous children in the Lansdowne area. She retired in 1975.
Mrs. Williams attended Lansdowne United Church. She enjoyed traveling and camping on land and water in earlier years. She also liked to knit and read. She was a member of the Rockport Seniors Group and participated in the SAIL Diners Club in Gananoque when she was able.
She is survived by two sons, Howard Williams and wife Judy and David Williams and wife Gloria, and one daughter, Marjorie Mallory and husband Lawrence, all of the Lansdowne area, as well as 14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are three sisters-in-law, Kay Williams, Hazel Chisamore and Helen Chisamore, as well as 19 nieces and 16 nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, nieces Shirley Coville and Doris Caldwell, and nephew Donald Chisamore, as well as all her siblings: five brothers, Chester, Almer, Daniel, Bazel and William, and seven sisters, Mary (in infancy), Elizabeth "Lizzie", Alpha Edgely, Etta MacMillan, Janie Anderson, Lyla Darling and Phoebe Slack.
Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home, Lansdowne, on January 10. The funeral was held January 11 in Lansdowne United Church, with Rev. Allister Rose officiating. Burial was at Rockport Protestant Cemetery.
The pallbearers were Larry and Scott Mallory, Mike and Jason Williams, Todd Alger and Tim Ketchum.
Memorial donations were directed to Rockport Protestant Cemetery, Heart and Stroke Foundation, Lung Association, Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario, St. Lawrence District Medical Centre and Lansdowne United Church.
Bertha Harkness, 87
Bertha Marjorie Harkness, a longtime employee of St. Vincent de Paul Hospital, died November 17, 2002 at Brockville General Hospital. She was 87.
She was born in Montreal's west end August 2, 1915, to John Smith and Mabel Wilson. She attended school in the former town of Mount Royal, where her artistic talents in music, drawing and fashion emerged, her family reports.
The family moved to Iroquois in 1934 where she met John Allan Harkness, a carpenter. They were married June 19, 1937.
The couple moved to Brockville in 1939 and raised three children.
Mrs. Harkness worked at St. Vincent de Paul Hospital for more than 20 years, was a night matron at the nursing school, relief dietitian and on the switchboard.
She enjoyed music, playing the organ and piano by ear and always singing or whistling old favourites. She made countless sketches and drawings of the local landscape and architecture. Her family describe her as talented, well-read and sociable.
Mrs. Harkness also enjoyed sewing and knitting, shopping, gardening and collecting brass.
She was in her element surrounded by family, friends and her cat, Cricket. She was a gifted storyteller who most enjoyed being at home in her kitchen, eyes shining and face lit up, telling tales of her youth, her family says.
Mrs. Harkness was also a frequent visitor to local hospitals and nursing homes, where she brought family and friends stories, jokes and smiles.
She is survived by her children Wilma Caldwell (Boyd), Jack Harkness (Debbie), both of Brockville, and Laurie Wilgosh (Sonny) of Pincher Creek, Alberta, and 18 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Harkness was predeceased by her husband, sisters Elda and Thelma, brother Malcolm, grandson Stephen and great-granddaughter Jennifer.
Funeral arraignments were made by the Barclay Funeral Home. A private graveside funeral was held November 21 at the Harkness Cemetery near Iroquois with Rev. Nelson Trafford officiating. Daughter Laurie and granddaughter Kelly spoke.
Memorial donations were directed to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and Humane Society.
Jean Lunman, 83
Jean Dalton Lunman, 83, died January 3, 2003 at St. Lawrence Lodge where she had lived the last 10 months of her life.
She was born June 8, 1919, in Brockville, the elder daughter of William and Lilly Chapman. She married Eric S. Lunman in 1943 and was a full-time homemaker while her sons were in school. After they were grown, she worked as a secretary for the Leeds and Grenville District School Board at Windsor, Riverview and Prince of Wales schools.
Her interests were her family, her cottage and the St. Lawrence River, and St. John's United Church. She was a lifelong member of St. John's and actively took part in many aspects of church life, including the United Church Women group, church bazaars and the choir, with which she sand for many years until her health prevented her from participating.
She enjoyed knitting and other crafts and her hands were never idle. Her mitts, socks, baby outfits and afghans were enjoyed by family and friends.
She lived all her life in Brockville at 70 Water Street, where her sister Frances came to live with her and help her for the last few years of her life.
She was predeceased by her husband Eric on January 18, 1970. She is survived by her sister Frances Chapman and two sons, Donald and wife Susan of Gananoque and Fred and wife Barbara of Athens, as well as six grandchildren, Debbie, Jennifer and husband Paul Maynard, Andrew, Rob, Erica and David Lunman, and two great-grandchildren, Braeden Lunman and Bailey Maynard.
Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, prior to the funeral held on January 6. The memorial service and burial at Oakland Cemetery were conducted by Rev. Myra Garvin of St. John's United Church. During the service, remembrances were given by her sons and grandsons Rob and Andrew (in Taiwan) as read by David.
The pallbearers were grandchildren Jennifer, Rob, Erica and David and nephews Roger Lunman of Ottawa and Larry Lunman of Mallorytown.
Memorial donations were directed to St. John's Church, the Canadian Diabetes Association and the Parkinson's Foundation.
