Loretta Culhane, a former nursing supervisor at St. Vincent de Paul Hospital, died suddenly November 29, 2002 at Kingston General Hospital. She was 78.
She was born March 1, 1924, in Mount St. Patrick, Ontario, to Daniel Culhane and Katherine Mulvihill. She studied nursing at Hotel Dieu Hospital, Kingston, graduating in 1945.
She married John "Jack" Culhane on September 1, 1947, in Mount St. Patrick. The couple lived in Brockville where Mrs. Culhane nursed at St. Vincent de Paul Hospital for many years. She retired in 1988 as a supervisor.
Mrs. Culhane was a parishioner of St. Francis Xavier Church and a member of the Catholic Women's League. She was a past board member of Sherwood Park Manor.
She enjoyed gardening, playing cards, reading and spending time with her grandchildren.
Mrs. Culhane is survived by her children John Culhane (Lynn) of Ottawa, Cathy Muir (Bruce) of Kingston, Dan Culhane (Dorothy), Chris Culhane (Gail) and Shirley Culhane, all of Brockville, and grandchildren Jennifer, Andrew, Beth, Michael, Chelsea, Shanna, Stephanie and Tammie. Also surviving are brother Daniel Scully and cousin Daniel Mulvihill, both of Renfrew, and aunt and uncle Catherine and Michael Mulvihill of Detroit.
She was predeceased by her parents, husband, Jack, in July 1999, and sister Stella McNulty.
Visitation was at the Irvine Funeral Home and Chapel December 2. The Liturgy of the Christian Funeral was at St. Francis Xavier Church December 3 with Father Brian Price as celebrant and Father Paul McAvoy of Kingston assisting him.
An honour guard of nurses, doctors and staff from St. Vincent de Paul Hospital and the Catholic Women's League were also present. Interment followed at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Peter Scotland, Teddy Allan, Reggie Scully, Kevin Mulvihill, Clair Scully and Wayne McNulty.
Memorial donations to the Hospice of Providence Palliative Care or the Canadian Diabetes Association would be gratefully acknowledged by the family.
Mae Nute, 93
LONDON -- Mae Audrey Lillian Nute, a Front Avenue resident for more than six decades, died December 18, 2002 at the London Health Sciences Centre, aged 93.
She was born June 22, 1909, at Cranbrook, British Columbia, to Robert Aikins and Louisa Kouk and spent her early childhood in western Canada, including Edmonton, Alberta, before the family moved to Brockville.
She married Harold Nute October 24, 1935, in Ogdensburg, N.Y.
Mrs. Nute worked as a hatter at the Wolthausen hat works, which became the Stetson Hat Company, until it closed in 1970. She then worked for several years at Millend Fabric Store on Perth Street.
She identified with the United Church and was a member of Wall Street United Church Women and the Maple Leaf Rebekah Lodge.
Mrs. Nute taught many local youngsters at Park Street Sunday School and was actively involved in all parts of the school for many years. Her home and family were very important to her. She enjoyed knitting and sewing.
She lived at 16 Front Avenue East for more than 60 years then moved to Lucknow, Ontario, in 1996 to be close to her family.
Mrs. Nute is survived by her daughter, Margaret Hofer and son-in-law Carl of Ripley, Ontario, and grandson Michael Hofer. She was predeceased by her parents and husband, Harold, in 1989.
The funeral was December 21 at the Irvine Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Dr. Alan Bennett of Wall Street United Church officiating. Interment was at Oakland Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Michael Hofer, Bruce Leslie, Mark Leslie and Mike VanAlstyne.
Ted Moore, 66
PRESCOTT -- Edward Mansel Moore, a former RCA employee with a host of active interests, died November 29, 2002 at his home on Massie Drive, a week after his 66th birthday.
He was born November 22, 1936, at Brockville to Mansel Moore and Georgina Morris.
Mr. Moore, who was known as Ted, worked in shipping and receiving at the former RCA plant in Prescott.
He enjoyed dancing, waterskiing, scouting, hockey and camping. Mr. and Mrs. Moore enjoyed spending time with family, friends and neighbours at their trailer on Otter Lake.
Mr. Moore was predeceased by his parents and his wife, Jean, in June 1996.
He is survived by his son Darrell (fiance Michelle Glenn), brother Richard, aunt and uncle Cecil and Maxine Moore, cousins Dale DeLottenville, Eleanor Stalkie, Joyce Deegan, Chris, David and Stephanie Morris and Gary and Francis Moore, nephew Pat Moore and niece Melanie Moore.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Chris Slater Funeral Home. The funeral was December 6 at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church with Rev. Ian McLean officiating. Interment followed at Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Severin Johnson, Don Barnette, John Glenn, Derek Pope, Kevin Plume and John Gibson.
Memorial donations were directed to the Canadian Cancer Society and Prescott Public Library.
Betty Ennis, 74
Betty Patricia Ennis, who enjoyed adventures by snowmobile and Cessna, died of pneumonia December 11, 2002 at St. Lawrence Lodge.
Mrs. Ennis, who was 74, had had multiple sclerosis for 30 years.
She was born January 2, 1928, in Pittston to Victor Riddell and Gladys Barkley and was raised in Pittston before being educated at Brockville Collegiate Institute.
She married David Ennis November 1, 1947, at Trinity Anglican Church, Brockville.
Mrs. Ennis worked as a baker at Tait's Bakery and as an executive secretary at the former Eaton's department store.
She enjoyed playing euchre, and in her younger years, traveling with her family, flying trips with her husband in the couple's Cessna aircraft, and snowmobiling. Spending time with family and friends was an important part of her life.
Mrs. Ennis was affiliated with the Anglican church and was active with the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
She is survived by her son Jeff (Pat) of Brockville, brothers Ed Riddell of Prescott and Don Riddell of Rockport, sisters Barbara Lang of Arizona and Donna Stanistreet of Bancroft and brother-in-law Gary Ennis of Brockville.
Mrs. Ennis was predeceased by her parents and husband, David, in 1995.
The funeral was December 13 in the Irvine Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Ron Horst officiating. Interment will be at the Harkness Cemetery, Iroquois, at a later date.
Memorial donations were directed to the Multiple Sclerosis Society and Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Glenn Smith, 84
Glenn Smith, 84, longtime owner of a local construction business, died November 16, 2002 at Ottawa Civic Hospital with his family by his side.
He was born William Glenn Smith on June 2, 1918, in Kingston to Theodore L. Smith and the former Helen Doherty.
He attended Zion United Church, where he met Mavis Ellen Brooks, also a member of the Young People's group in 1935. They were married October 7, 1939.
With the exception of his time stationed in Prince Rupert, B.C., as a navigator in the Canadian Air Force, he worked with his father and brothers in their family construction business in Kingston. In 1959 he moved his own family to Brockville, where he opened Glenn Smith Building Service Limited, a business founded on principles of honesty, integrity and skilled craftsmanship. He retired in 1984.
Mr. Smith's family was his main focus in life. He and his wife were among the founders of the Swingin' Saints square dance club and in their later years remained active in line dancing and Tai-Chi.
He was an avid reader, a skilled miniature-furniture hobbyist and an enthusiastic fisherman, enjoying the sport with his son-in-law John.
He and his wife had recently returned from a fall vacation in Muskoka.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife Mavis Smith and two daughters and sons-in-law, Heather Knack of Saranac Lake, N.Y. and Peter Knack of Louisville, Kentucky, and Holly Welch and husband John of Lyn. Also surviving are grandchildren Hillary Knack of Toronto, Christopher Knack of Windsor and Darcie Knack of Louisville.
He leaves a sister, June Coates of Glenburnie, and brother, Ted and wife Florence of Ottawa, half-sister and half-niece Laura Kenny and husband Allan of Gananoque, and sisters-in-law Jean Smith, Doreen Smith and Margaret Holtham, all of Kingston, as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, brothers Charlie, Ken and baby Donny, as well as sister-in-law Lillian and brother-in-law George Coates.
The celebration of his life was held November 19 at the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, with Rev. Roland Glendinning officiating. Grandson Chris and close friend Nicole Dunsmore sang Somewhere Over the Rainbow, the grandchildren's remembrances were recounted by Hillary Knack and The Riverside Singers sang The Gospel Ship.
Bearers were John Welch, Peter Knack, Hillary, Darcie and Chris Knack and Nicole Dunsmore. The ashes were buried in Oakland Cemetery.
Memorial donations were directed to the Brockville General Hospital Foundation, the Ottawa Civic Hospital Palliative Care Unit and Ottawa Heart Institute.
