John Koen, 64

John Koen, 64, died November 4, 2002 at Brockville General Hospital with his family by his side.

He was born February 7, 1938, in Kingston to William John Koen and the former Mary-Ellen Corrigan and was raised and educated in Kingston.

He was hired by Bell Canada right out of high school and remained with Bell until his retirement in 1991.

He married the former Eilean Birtch on December 2, 1983, in Brockville.

Mr. Koen was a member of the Brockville Lions Club, which he joined in April 1972. He enjoyed his work and travel with the club.

He was also a member of the Mallorytown Legion Branch 484 for many years. He was an avid darts player and could be found playing in many of the Legion's darts tournaments.

Since retirement, he often enjoyed relaxing at home, quietly reading a book, or taking drives around the area with his wife. Together they enjoyed camping and traveling.

Mr. Koen is survived by his wife Eilean Koen of Mallorytown, daughter Cari Lavier and husband Carl of Brockville and son Terry Koen and wife Karen of Kingston, as well as grandchildren Kristen and Serena Koen.

Also surviving are three brothers, Patrick Koen and wife Lorene of Pasadena, Calif., and WIlliam Koen and wife Marg and Bernard Koen, all of Kingston, and one sister, Mary Catton and husband Dawson of Toronto, as well as several nieces and nephews.

He leaves stepchildren Donald Birtch and wife Elaine of Innismore, Shane Birtch and wife Patsy of Athens and Sandra Eligh and husband Larry of Mallorytown, and several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents.

A celebration of his life was held November 7 at Roselawn Tribute Centre, Maitland, with Father John Hibbard officiating.

The eulogy was given by sister Mary Catton and niece Nancy Koen read Psalm 23.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Irvine Funeral Home, Brockville.

Carl King, 72

Carl King, 72, of RR 4, Brockville, died December 24, 2002 at Maple View Lodge, Athens. He had been ill for three years.

Born Herbert Carl King on November 4, 1930, in North Augusta, he was the son of Joseph Herbert King and the former Nellie Davis. He was educated in New Dublin and at Brockville Collegiate Institute and Vocational School.

He worked for many years at the Brockville Lumber Company. He identified with the United Church of Canada at Lyn and New Dublin and was a past member of the Orange Lodge. He enjoyed church-related activities and was a volunteer driver, taking senior citizens to appointments.

He belonged to euchre clubs and enjoyed the outdoors and gardening. He went duck and deer hunting, and played billiards.

Mr. King never married but is survived by a sister, Lois Willis of Rochester, N.Y.; a brother-in-law, Alan R. Beattie of New Dublin, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents, sister Jean Beattie and brother-in-law Robert N. Willis.

Friends called before the funeral on December 28 at the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, where Rev. Jean Baker, of Christ United Church, Lyn, officiated. Burial was at New Dublin Cemetery.

The pallbearers were Derek and Mark King, Jeffrey and Trent Davis, Dean McKay and Charles A. Beattie. The honorary pallbearers were R. Douglas Willis and Donald J. Willis.

Memorial donations were directed to Christ United Church in Lyn, Maple View Lodge in Athens and the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Muriel York, 85

SPENCERVILLE -- Muriel Marguerite York, 85, died November 21, 2002 at Winchester District Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.

She was born on April 17, 1917, in Edwardsburgh Township to William Burnside and the former Mary King. She attended Glen Smail and Spencerville Continuation schools.

On April 18, 1936, she married James York and then moved to Shanly, where they farmed until retirement.

After her husband's death in 1992, she remained in Shanly, living there 66 years in all.

Mrs. York was a life member of the Shanly United Church Women and enjoyed attending church functions in her community and surrounding areas. She was also an avid euchre player.

She loved baking bread and rolls to share with her family, friends and neighbours. She also hooked rugs and had completed more than 50 of them.

Mrs. York is survived by her daughters, Mary Simzer of Brockville and Connie Cinnamon and husband Barry of RR 1, Winchester, and son George of Shanly. She leaves seven grandchildren, Jamey Simzer and wife Andrea of Whitby, Judy Simzer-Skeggs and husband Ron Skeggs of Kingston, Nathan, Dave and Denny Cinnamon of Winchester, Lois York of Winchester Springs and Jimmie York of Spencerville; and six great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are her brother Gerald Burnside of Johnstown and sisters-in-law Reta Burnside of RR 4, Spencerville, and Jean York of Brockville.

Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her sister Elsie Merkley and brothers Howard, Carl and Russell and son-in-law Lyal Simzer.

Friends called at the Grant Brown Funeral Home-Purcell Chapel, Spencerville, where on November 25 the funeral was held, with Rev. Patricia Swann officiating.

The eulogy was delivered by grandson Jamey Simzer. Burial followed at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Maitland.

The pallbearers were grandsons Jamey Simzer, Jimmie York and Nathan, Dave and Denny Cinnamon and great-grandson Joey Skeggs.

Memorial donations to Winchester District Memorial Hospital were gratefully acknowledged by the family.

Frank Donaghue, 79

Frank Donaghue, 79, a former plumber and pipe fitter, died February 24, 2003 at Brockville General Hospital. He had had cancer for three years.

Born Francis Joseph Donaghue on March 7, 1923 in Bedford Township, he was the son of John Donaghue of Westport and the former Elizabeth Hart, who came from Railton. He attended St. Edward School, Westport, and lived in Westport, Elgin and Toledo before the war.

In 1942 he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy and served on RCNV Cap de la Madeleine in the North Atlantic during the Second World War. After his discharge in 1945, he came to Brockville.

On July 26, 1958 he married Ellen Noreen Reid in St. Brendan's Church, Rockport and they had two children.

Mr. Donaghue made his living as a plumber and pipe fitter for 33 years. He was a member of Local 221 of the union in Kingston. After retiring from plumbing, he worked as a security guard at Phillips Cables for 10 years. He retired from that job 13 years ago.

He was a member of the Brockville Rifles from 1957 to 1972. He belonged to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 96 in Brockville for 58 years and was a member of the St. Lawrence Woodcarvers, Stay Well Club and Diamond Jubilee Club.

A member of the St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Parish in Brockville, he also was a life member of the Knights of Columbus 1049.

His interests included fishing, woodcarving, walking the family retrievers, bowling, shuffleboard and rooting for the Toronto Maple Leafs hockey team and the Toronto Blue Jays baseball team. He had travelled across Canada and to Florida, but the highlight of his travels was his dream trip to Hawaii in 1995.

Mr. Donaghue is survived by his wife Noreen Donaghue, son Tom and daughter Paula Donaghue and her special friend Robin Cardinal, all of Brockville. Also surviving are his sister Mary H. Donaghue and brother James "Irish" Donaghue and wife Mary, all of Brockville; sisters-in-law Mary L. Donaghue and Cecilia Lefave, both of Brockville; and brothers-in-law Paul Reid and wife Betty of Lansdowne and Bernard Reid and wife Eva of Brockville, as well as several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, parents-in-law Thomas and Rose Ann Reid, brother Ignatius "Nick" Donaghue, brothers-in-law Jack Lefave and Murray Reid and sisters-in-law Edna Reid and Elsie Reid.

Friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home, Brockville, on February 25 and a special service was held by the Knights of Columbus Council 1049.

The funeral was held February 26 in St. Francis Xavier Church with Father Brian Price officiating. Burial followed at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery.

The pallbearers were Michael Landry, Paul Herder, Maurice Fodey, Tom Bush, Tim Glashan and Matt Wren. The honorary pallbearers were members of the Knights of Columbus.

Memorial donations were directed to the Canadian Cancer Society, Heart and Stroke Foundation and ALS Society (Lou Gehrig's Disease).

Gladys McIntyre, 75

PRESCOTT -- Gladys Edith Irene McIntyre, 75, died February 26, 2003 at Brockville General Hospital.

She was born July 13, 1927 at Inkerman to Donald Casselman and the former Edith Cardwell.

She worked in the shipping and receiving department at the Newell Manufacturing plant in Prescott. Her interests included fishing, woodworking and caring for her animals.

She is survived by her brother Delbert Casselman and wife Lydia, sisters-in-law Betty and Charlotte Casselman, friend Eleanor Reid and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, husband Lawrence McIntyre, brothers Albert, Erwin, Edwin and Fred Casselman and Gerald Wilkinson, and sisters-in-law Naomi and Eleanor Casselman.

Friends called at the Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott, where on February 28 the funeral was held, with Rev. Patricia Swann officiating. Burial will be at Sandy Hill Cemetery in the spring.

Memorial donations were directed to Hospice of Providence Palliative Care and the Humane Society.
