Mr. Robert William Hannaford
March 6, 1918 - August 14, 2007

LIEUTENANT ROBERT WILLIAM HANNAFORD, P.Eng. Robert William Hannaford, passed away in Toronto August 14, 2007, after a lengthy period of declining health, which he bore with stoicism and courage. Robert was born, in Hamilton, Ontario, on March 6, 1918. He was the son of William Stanley Preston Hannaford and Ivy Margaret Towers, both of Hamilton, from whom he inherited a lively intelligence, a quick wit, a good sense of humour, an appreciation of music, and the old- fashioned solid virtue of dedication to family, and to king and country. He grew up in Toronto together with his siblings, Marion Partridge and Phyllis Anderson. A beautiful curly-haired boy, Robert was a dear son to his parents and a mischievous brother for his sisters. He attended Humberside Collegiate Institute, where he combined his scholastic skills with athletics, playing on the Junior and Varsity football teams. He also distinguished himself as a swimmer, and as a diver at the old High Park Mineral Baths on the 10 metre tower. He graduated, from the University of Toronto School of Practical Science in 1941 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. While at the University, he was a member of the Phi Delta Kappa fraternity. Upon graduation, he worked in an artillery manufacturing plant in Hamilton, and soon joined the Canadian Army and served in the Royal Canadian Ordinance Corps and the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. He served in Canada and overseas in the United Kingdom, Italy, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, rising to the rank of Lieutenant. He was involved in the invasions of Italy and Normandy and the subsequent operations including the liberation of the Netherlands, which is well-remembered in both Canadian and Dutch history, and he also served as a member of the occupation forces in Germany following Victory in Europe. He recounted his nighttime passage through Rome, as a part of the invading American, British, Canadian, Australian and other British Empire forces. His proof that he and his comrades-in-arms had been there, was the sight of the Coliseum silhouetted against the starlit sky, as his truck rumbled through the blacked-out city. Somewhere north, ahead in the darkness, the German military forces awaited them. After service in the early months of the occupation of Germany, Robert returned to Canada where he married his lifelong love, Betty Isobel Peebles in Toronto in 1946. They remained devotedly married until Betty's death in 2007. They had three children: Dawn Elizabeth Hannaford, David Byron Hannaford, and Debra Ann Hannaford Johnston. Robert had a long and successful career in engineering and construction in Toronto, working with his father at Dickie Construction Company, as a partner in R.W. Hannaford Construction Company Limited, and with other firms before finally retiring with many projects to his credit as a builder and manager. He was, as but one example, the Resident Engineer on the construction of the Toronto Zoo, which i one of North America's outstanding zoo facilities. In later years, Robert enjoyed his grandchildren and, more recently, his great-granddaughters. After a long and interesting life filled with challenge, adventure, family, friends and travels to faraway lands such as Egypt and Greece, Robert finally laid down his burdens, and took his final journey with a special courage and dignity. And I shall hear, tho' soft you tread above me And all my dreams will warm and sweeter be If you'll not fail to tell me that you love me I'll simply sleep in peace until you come to me. His family and friends have said their fond and final farewells, and Robert has heard the calling of the pipes a last time. May he sleep in peace. A celebration of Robert's life will take place at 1:00 p.m. Monday, August 20 at the Highland Funeral Home and Cremation Centre - Scarborough Chapel, located at the northwest corner of Sheppard Avenue and Warden Avenue, 3280 Sheppard Avenue East, Scarborough, Ontario M1T 3K3. Telephone: 416-773-0933. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Seven Oaks Nursing Home in Toronto would be welcomed.
