Dr. Derek York
August 12, 1936 - August 9, 2007
Passed peacefully at the age of 70, in his family's loving care at Huronia District Hospital, Thursday August 9th 2007. He wil be very sadly missed by his wife Lydia, son Link and partner Lisa, his sister Margaret and brother Alan, nephews Richard and Nigel, nieces Linda and Coral, and sister-in-law Monica, niece Dessa and nephew Stefan...and by the many, dear friends, colleagues and strudents that Derek touched throughout the course of his remarkable career and life. He was a world renowed scientist, educator, author, columnist...and of course, sportsfanatic! After graduating from University College, Oxford, Derek was invited to The University of Toronto in 1960, eventually becoming Chairman of the Physics Department. Derek was also named a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, appointed the J. Tuzo Wilson Professor of Geophysics, was Foreign Principal Investigator for NASA, a popular Columnist for The Globe & Mail, an author of several successful books and in 2005 was the recipient of the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award by The Canadian Association of Physicists. Yet knowing Derek, he would probably have counted the handful of victories of his Geophysics soccer team over arch- rivals Geology among his most cherished achievements. Derek was a truly wonderful, inspiring and devoted Husband and Dad who traveled the world (and Go Home Lake!) with Lydia and Link, on many great adventures. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the team at Sunnybrook, in particular, Dr. Scott Berry, and R.N. Mary Jamieson for their wonderful dedication, care and support for Derek through his battle with prostate cancer. Derek's unique and indomitable spirit continues to shine through all who knew him. He will be greatly, deeply missed. At A later date, there will be a celebration of Derek's life, as well as the launch of a unique on-line initiative which will continue the spirit of Derek's passion to communicate and inspire through the exchange of ideas. Arrangements entrusted to the Nicholls Funeral Home, Midland.
