KEMPTVILLE -- Hilda Maude Grier, 91, a retired registered nurse, died March 9, 2003 at Kemptville District Hospital.
She was born in Lansdowne Township, Leeds County, on January 10, 1912, the daughter of Milton Grier and the former Jennie Cross.
In 1938 she received her registered nursing degree from Brockville General Hospital. During her nursing career, she worked at several hospitals including York County Hospital in Newmarket, Guelph General Hospital and Montreal General Hospital. She also nursed at Sunnybrook Military Hospital in Toronto, where she was working when she retired in 1977.
In 1993, she moved to Bayfield Manor Retirement Home to be near her sister, Verma Davidson, and family.
Among her many interests and hobbies, she loved to sew, knit, quilt, paint and do copper work. She also travelled the world extensively, visiting many countries.
Miss Grier is survived by her nephew John Davidson and wife Ruth and niece Linda Gilmer and husband Dale, all of Manotick. She was the great-aunt of Elizabeth Davidson, Greg Davidson and wife Lindy, Jen Gilmer, Shelley Prangley and husband Greg and Derek Gilmer, who all survive.
She was predeceased by brother Russell Grier and sister Verma Davidson and husband Arnold.
Friends called at the Grant Brown Funeral Home-Rolston Chapel, Kemptville where on March 12 the funeral was held, with Rev. Ray Porth officiating. Burial will be at Union Cemetery, Lansdowne.
Memorial donations to Kemptville District Hospital will be gratefully acknowledged by the family.
Arnold Williamson, 76
ATHENS -- Arnold Curtis Williamson, 76, formerly of Oak Leaf, died January 18, 2003 at St. Vincent de Paul Hospital.
He was born at Oak Leaf on June 16, 1926, to Leonard Williamson and the former Louisa Curtis.
He grew up in Oak Leaf and married Dorothy Yates on July 7, 1951, in Athens United Church.
He worked as an electrician, carpenter, plumber and contractor and retired 13 years ago, in 1990. He moved to Athens in 2000.
He identified with Holy Trinity Church, Oak Leaf.
His main interests were his work and his family.
Mr. Williamson is survived by his wife Dorothy, daughter Elinor Seed and husband Bob of Athens, grandchildren Kylie Allan and Courtney Seed, brother Glenn Williamson and wife Diana of Charleston Lake and sisters Gwen Chant and husband Arthur of RR 1, Portland, and Elva Danby and husband Stirling of Perth Road, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Friends called at the Judson Funeral Home, Athens, where on January 21 the funeral was held, with Canon Borden Purcell, of Holy Trinity Church, officiating.
Burial will be at Oak Leaf Cemetery in the spring.
The pallbearers were David, Paul, Danny and Blair Chant, Gerry Curtis and Darin Williamson.
Memorial donations were directed to the Hospice of Providence Palliative Care and the Canadian Cancer Society.
Dorothy Moulton, 82
Dorothy Martha Moulton, 82, of RR 5, Brockville, died January 22, 2003 at Bridlewood Manor.
She was born July 12, 1920, in Roebuck to Ezra Knapp and the former Mary Estella Love. She grew up in Roebuck, attended public school there and graduated from North Augusta High School, a continuation school.
She worked at the government works in Prescott during the war years and was transferred to the Wartime Prices and Trade Board in Ottawa but left the position due to ill health.
She returned to the Brockville area and worked for the T. Eaton Co.
On August 8, 1945, she married Harold Mercier in Spencerville and they lived in that village for a while before moving to Addison.
Then her husband found work at Ralph's dairy farm and they lived on the Ralph farm. She worked in the dairy bar at Ralph's Dairy.
They moved to the J.A. Johnston pony farm on County Road 2, east of Brockville, and lived in a stone house there for many years, until 1966, when they moved to Brockville.
Mrs. Mercier (as she then was called) began working as a salesperson at Woolworth's and over the years worked in a series of retail stores, including T. Eaton Co., Walker's and Marks and Spencer. She was a department supervisor for more than 20 years. In 1978 she retired.
After the accidental death of her first husband, Harold, in 1969, she married Roy Wilton Moulton on August 1, 1970, in St. John's United Church, Brockville, and they lived in Addison.
Mrs. Moulton was a member of the United Church, first at St. John's in Brockville, later at Addison United Church and again, after returning to Brockville in the early 1980s, at St. John's.
An active member of Women of the Moose in the 1940s and 1950s, she later joined the Rebekahs, starting in the Maple Leaf Rebekah Lodge No. 33 in 1956 and transferring to Prescott's Wellington Rebekah Lodge No. 108 in 2000.
She enjoyed her lodge work and was honoured with the Decoration of Chivalry Medal in 1968, the highest honour a Rebekah can receive. She held many offices and served on the Degree team.
She was a past noble grand of her lodge and received the jewel (1965-66); a past district deputy of Brockville District No. 1, Rebekah Assembly of Ontario(1983) and a past officer of the Rebekah Assembly of Ontario (1993-94).
Mrs. Moulton enjoyed quilting, sewing, knitting and traveling. With her husband Roy she travelled all over Canada and in the United States.
Her special interests were her home, family and grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughter Linda Spicer and husband Ralph of RR 5, Brockville; three grandchildren, Ken Spicer and wife Janice of Inverary, Tracey Massey and husband Scott of Brockville and Jeffery Spicer of Brockville; and two great-grandchildren Kaitlin Spicer and Colin Massey.
Also surviving are her sister Evelyn Warner-Boisvert and husband Robert of Prescott and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her second husband, Roy, in 1999, and by brothers Stuart, Herbert and Gerald Knapp.
Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, where on January 24 the Wellington Rebekah Lodge No. 108 held a special service.
The funeral was held January 25 in the Barclay Chapel, with Linda Winton of the North Augusta United Church Pastoral Charge officiating and Rev. Dr. Helen Wilson assisting.
Grandson Ken Spicer and niece Bonnie Tackaberry each gave a eulogy. Burial followed at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Maitland.
The active pallbearers were Ken Spicer, Jeffery Spicer, Scott Massey, Blaine Tackaberry, Morris Mercier and Donald Mercier. The honorary pallbearers were Tracey Massey, Janice Spicer, Brian Warner and Earl Spicer.
Memorial donations to Hospice of Providence Palliative Care and the Heart and Stroke Foundation were greatfully acknowledged by the family.
Betty Publow, 75
Betty Publow, 75, a former figure skating instructor, died January 13, 2003 at her home in Merrickville.
She was born July 29, 1927 in Oshawa to Frankford Snowdon and the former Margaret Drinkle. She was raised and educated in Oshawa, where she married Charles Publow on October 29, 1948.
She moved to Brockville in 1951 and lived on King Street East and Victoria Avenue, before moving to Hallecks Road and eventually Merrickville.
She worked as a sales clerk at the Canadian Tire store in Brockville. She was also a good figure skater and became a figure skating instructor in Spencerville, Brockville and Richmond.
Mrs. Publow identified with St. Francis Xavier Church in Brockville and with St. Ann's in Merrickville.
She was a member of the Merrickville Legion Ladies Dart League, enjoyed baseball, softball and all sports, and loved watching her grandchildren.
She was a gardener and participated in Merrickville's Communities in Bloom program.
Her husband Charles died in 1973, her father in 1985 and her mother on January 6, 2003. She was also predeceased by an infant daughter Elizabeth and a brother Tom.
She is survived by five of her six children: Joan Spencer St. Louis and her husband Denis of Merrickville; Paul and his wife Pat of Toronto; Michael and his wife Karen of Belleville; Phil and his wife Pauline and Peter and his wife Rosanna, all of Brockville.
Also surviving are 14 grandchildren, Nicholas and Benjamin Spencer, Sean, Carleigh, Mark, Erica, Brandon and Christy Publow, Ed Kennedy, Laraine McEwen, Colin, Dane, Brett and Taylor Publow; and two great-grandchildren, Sierra Kennedy and Carter McEwen.
She is survived by brother Brenton of Oshawa and sister Gloria Gene of Bowmanville, as well as several nieces and nephews and brothers- and sisters-in-law in Perth.
Friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home and Chapel, Brockville, on January 13 and 14. The Liturgy of the Christian Funeral was celebrated in St. Ann Roman Catholic Church, Merrickville. Burial followed at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Brockville.
The pallbearers were Nicholas and Benjamin Spencer and Sean, Mark, Brandon, Dane, Brett and Colin Publow.
