Jean Volks, 76

Jean Volks, 76, died March 5, 2003 at St. Vincent de Paul Hospital where she had been a patient since February 3.

She was born July 27, 1926 in Inkerman Station to Leonard Bell and the former Jessie McKercher and was raised and educated in that area.

Eventually she moved to Toronto, where she met Clifford Volks; they were married on November 20, 1954.

She enjoyed living and working in Toronto for many years. After having her children, the family returned to her roots in 1967. Mrs. Volks worked as a pharmacist's assistant at the drugstore in Winchester, initially for Gord LaRose and eventually for Wayne Burns.

Retirement brought her to the Brockville area in 1986 and many pleasant years were spent establishing new friendships through Red Cross Homemaking, golf, line dancing, tai chi and the Shepherd's Centre. She enjoyed nature and flowers and was an avid hockey fan. She corresponded with many pen pals and maintained a close relationship with extended family and friends. She identified with Wall Street United Church.

Mrs. Volks is survived by her husband Cliff, her son Bob and wife Janet of Winchester, her daughter Cheryl Mussell and husband Bob of Brockville and five grandchildren.

Also surviving are her sisters Maxine "Peg" Baldwin, June Hoy and husband Sherman and Joan Ponting, sister-in-law Evelyn Bell, brother-in-law Roland Peacock and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, brothers Ralph, Sam, Les and Steve Bell and sister Betty Baker.

A celebration of her life was held on March 11 at Wall Street United Church, with Rev. Doug Warren officiating. Cremation was arranged and a private burial was held March 11 at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Maitland.

Memorial donations were directed to the Hospice of Providence Palliative Care.

Luella Yateman, 78

Luella Jane Yateman, 78, died February 8, 2003 at Brockville General Hospital.

She was born June 2, 1924 in Brockville to John Yateman and the former Helen Wescon and grew up at Eastons Corners.

She worked as a hairdresser in Brockville for 20 years, retiring at 38. She then lived in Cameron, Ont. for 30 years. She married Robert Mulholland on September 12, 1970 in Midland, Ont. In 2001 she returned to Brockville.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for several years. Her interests included crossword puzzles, sports, nature, her cat, playing cards, traveling and spending time at home.

She is survived by her husband Robert Mulholland, sister Elva Miller of Tincap and several nieces and nephews, as well as Sunday Weagant and Marcie Bowdridge.

She was predeceased by her parents, four brothers and four sisters.

A graveside service for family and friends will be held April 5 at Brown's Cemetery in Fairfield, north of Brockville off North Augusta Road. Rev. Myra Garvin, of St. John's United Church, Brockville, will officiate.

Mervin Agopsowicz, 74

Mervin "Pogo" Agopsowicz, 74, of Portland, died March 17, 2003 in Ottawa, following a long illness.

He was born May 26, 1928, in Regina, Saskatchewan, the son of Albert Agopsowicz and the former Ellen Barrens. He grew up in Saskatchewan, moved to British Columbia and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. While on basic training in the Centralia area in Ontario, he met Shirley May Jordan and they were married in Ontario on June 30, 1950.

He worked as an air frame technician for the RCAF. After 28 years he retired and then worked as a photographer, sign painter and disc jockey.

Over the years he lived in Manitoba and Alberta as well, before moving to Portland in 1992.

He belonged to the Westport Bridge Club and the Elgin branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.

His interests included golf, fishing, music, sign painting, photography, drumming, sailing and bad jokes.

He is survived by two sons, Sam Agopsowicz and wife Michele Bouska of Mission, B.C., and Steve Agopsowicz and wife Karen of Fort McMurray, Alta., and two daughters, Sandra LeBlanc and husband Adrien of Dallas, Texas, and Leslie Betz and partner Kavin Holditch of Niagara Falls, Ont., as well as eight grandchildren.

Also surviving are his brothers Leon Agopsowicz and Jake Buchanan and sister Violet Seymour.

He was predeceased by his parents and his wife, Shirley Agopsowicz.

Friends called at the Scotland Funeral Home, Elgin, on March 20. The funeral was held March 21 at the United Church in Portland. Burial was at South Park Cemetery, St. Thomas, Ont.

The pallbearers were Kavin Holditch, Victor and Sam Agopsowicz, Sandra and Adrien LeBlanc and Nick Helsdingen.

Memorial donations were directed to the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum of Port Hope, Ont.

Barbara Barton, 72

Barbara Jane Barton, 72, of Raymore, Missouri, who grew up in the Prescott area, died March 20, 2003 at her home, after a long illness with cancer.

She was born July 18, 1930 in Port Colborne, Ont., to Lloyd Souder and the former Edna Farrar. When she was a child, her family moved to Prescott and then New Wexford, where she grew up.

She married Reginald W. Barton in the summer of 1948 in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Prescott. Her husband was in the army and they moved all over the United States and Canada before settling in Missouri. She lived in Kansas City, Missouri, before moving to Raymore.

Her main interests were her home and family. She was an avid bowler and enjoyed the company of her two cocker spaniels.

Mrs. Barton is survived by six children, Terry P. Barton of San Antonio, Texas; Richard W. Barton, Jeffrey W. Barton, Shari L. Lowrey and Michael L. Barton, all of Raymore; and Scott W. Barton of Belton, Missouri; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are three sisters, Kay Supple, Dorothy Millar and husband Howard, and Margaret Gibson and husband Melville, all of Prescott, and two brothers, Bruce Souder and wife Alice of Port Colborne and Donald Souder and wife Beverly of Brockville.

She was predeceased by her parents and husband Reginald Barton.

Friends called March 24 at the Cullen Funeral Home, 612 West Foxwood Drive, Raymore MO 64083 (816-322-5278) before the evening funeral in the Cullen chapel. Burial took place the next day at Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth, Kansas.

Memorial donations were directed to the Cancer Society.

Jack Runham, 94

ATHENS -- Jack Runham, 94, a former cheesemaker, died March 5, 2003 at Maple View Lodge, Athens.

He was born John Horace Runham in Cambridge, England on August 8, 1908 to Horace Runham and the former Mary Caldwell.

He immigrated to Canada in 1924 and worked first for Leonard Knapp as a farm helper.

Then he went to work for Claude Flood at the cheese factory in Plum Hollow. Finally he ran the cheese factory in Forfar.

During his cheesemaking years, he once won a ribbon for his cheese at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto.

In later years he worked in plumbing and heating, operating his own business, Jack Runham Plumbing and Heating.

He then took a correspondence course in television repair and added that to his business. He retired 27 years ago.

He was married to Beatrice McDaniel in May 1934 and they had two sons.

He owned a cottage on Charleston Lake which he and his family enjoyed for many years.

Mr. Runham loved music. He played mainly banjo but also saxophone and was for many years a member of Ray Healey's band, which played for dances and house parties in the area.

His son Jack recalls his dad playing saxophone during New Year's Eve festivities at Athens Town Hall.

He identified with the Anglican Church.

He is survived by his sons, Jack Runham and wife Lorna of Athens and Pat Runham and fiancee Phyllis of Tremor; seven grandchildren, Janice Morrison and husband Dave of Athens, Jack Runham Jr. and wife Lisa of RR 3, Athens, Jeffrey Runham of Athens, Jim Runham and wife Susan of Kingston, and Steven, Bill and Leslie Runham, all of Belleville; and six great-grandchildren, Allan, Jenna, Ashley, Alicia, Tyler and Whitney.

He was predeceased by his wife Beatrice Runham about 14 years ago and by three brothers, Maurice, Pat and Charlie Runham, all of whom remained in England.

Friends called at the Judson Funeral Home, Athens, where on March 7 the funeral was held, with Rev. Peggy Hudson officiating. Burial followed at Glen Elbe Cemetery.

The pallbearers were Jack Runham Jr., Tyler and Jeff Runham, Reg Latimer and Allan and Dave Morrison.

Memorial donations were directed to the Maple View Lodge Auxiliary.
