ATHENS -- Marion Loretta La Pointe, 88, formerly of Plum Hollow, died March 23, 2003 at Maple View Lodge, Athens.
She was born January 3, 1915, in South Crosby, the daughter of Arthur Cowles and the former Loretta Foxton. She grew up in the Elgin district and married Ernest La Pointe on May 25, 1943 in Brockville.
She and her husband lived and farmed in Plum Hollow. She also worked at the Wrightway Laundry and Parisienne Laundry, both in Brockville, and then at the Scott's Restaurant on Highway 401 at Mallorytown.
She lived in the Legion Village at Charlotte Place in Brockville before moving to Maple View Lodge 18 months ago.
Mrs. La Pointe enjoyed playing cards, gardening and flowers, and her home and family.
She was predeceased by her husband on November 30, 1975, and by three brothers, Walter, Claude and Vernon Cowles (who lived at Peterborough, Brockville and Maitland, respectively), and an infant sister, Marjorie.
She is survived by her son Earl and wife Linda of RR 4, Mallorytown, and daughter Hilda Bellemore and husband Edward of RR 1, Brockville. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Richard and Cathy La Pointe of RR 4, Mallorytown, Barbara Benoit of Brockville, Gloria and Mike Cox of Brampton, Diane and Scott Thorburn of Ottawa and Sherry Bellemore and fiance Kevin of Brockville, as well as seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Friends called at the Judson Funeral Home, Athens, where on March 26 the funeral was held, with Rev. Dolly Dikens, of Athens United Church, officiating.
The pallbearers were Scott Thorburn, Mike Cox, Richard and Cody La Pointe and Bruce and Bob Leeder.
Memorial donations were directed to the Maple View Lodge Auxiliary.
Thomas 'Bud' McIlvenna, 65
ATHENS -- Thomas James "Bud" McIlvenna, 65, of Delta, died February 13, 2003 at Brockville General Hospital. He had had diabetes for 10 years.
Born in Brockville on January 16, 1938, he was the son of Thomas James McIlvenna Sr., of Brockville, who survives, and the former Mary Elizabeth Durant, who predeceased her son.
He was raised in Brockville and attended Douglas Haig and Commonwealth public schools.
On September 26, 1959, he married Lorraine Coville in Iroquois. He lived in Brockville, then moved to Charleston Lake and remained there until 1996.
Then he moved to Kingston, where he lived for a short time before moving to Delta in 2000.
Mr. McIlvenna was a general contractor. He started his drywall business in 1974 and continued it until his retirement in 1996.
He identified with the Free Methodist Church and enjoyed golf, hockey and baseball. A kind and thoughtful man, he most enjoyed being with his family.
He is survived by his father, Tom McIlvenna Sr., wife, Lorraine McIlvenna; son Craig McIlvenna and wife Denise of New Brunswick; three daughters, Bonnie Beattie and husband Ken of Mississauga, Mary Ann Diotte and husband Andre of Delta and Belinda McLean and husband Lloyd of Athens; and seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are his sisters, Sylvia Franks and husband Bob, Shirley McIlvenna and Sandra McIlvenna, all of Brockville, as well as several nieces and nephews and an aunt, Mary Gray, of Toledo.
He was predeceased by his mother and his brother, Reggie McIlvenna.
Friends called at the Judson Funeral Home, Athens, before the funeral, which was held February 16 in the funeral home chapel, with Pastor Peter Robillard officiating. Cremation was arranged.
Donations were directed to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Diabetes Association.
Rosella Moxley, 73
Rosella Moxley, 73, died of cancer March 19, 2003 at St. Vincent de Paul Hospital after an illness lasting two years.
She was born February 19, 1930 at Forfar to Charles William Morley Shire and the former Frances "Fannie" Eagle. She grew up in Delta and district and married Borden Moxley in Brockville in 1950. Over the years she lived at RR 4, Brockville, and on Clarissa Street and Buell Street in Brockville.
She worked as a school bus driver; at the Automatic Electric plant; as a bookkeeper in Ottawa for a government office; and at Chaffey's Lock. She retired when she was 64. She identified with Wall Street United Church.
Mrs. Moxley is survived by her daughter Marion of Brockville, three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, a brother Harold Shire in Saskatchewan, a sister Lillian in Brockville and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Borden, and a son, Harold Moxley.
Friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home and Chapel, Brockville, where on March 22 the funeral was held, with Rev. Bruce Ross, of Wall Street United Church, officiating. Burial was at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Maitland.
The pallbearers were Don Brooks, Anthony Stewart, Erik Gravelle, Stephen Moxley and Donald Eagle.
Memorial donations were directed to the Canadian Cancer Society and the Hospice of Providence Palliative Care.
James Casselman, 94
James Henry Casselman, 94, retired from Phillips Cables, died at Brockville General Hospital on January 14, 2003.
He was born in Winchester Springs on April 24, 1908, the son of Mason Casselman and the former Nellie Froats.
He was raised and educated in Winchester Springs and married Audrey Harper on May 10, 1937 in Elma.
He came to Brockville in 1945 and worked at Phillips Cables as a machine operator. He retired 30 years ago.
Mr. Casselman identified with St. John's United Church and was a member of the Orange Lodge.
He enjoyed traveling and had been to Hawaii, Barbados, Mexico and the United Kingdom in earlier years.
He is survived by his wife Audrey and sister Flossie Summers of St. Lawrence Lodge, Brockville.
He and his wife had no children but other survivors include brothers-in-law Scott Gibson of Prescott and Clifford Grant Harper of Athens, sisters-in-law Ruth Casselman of Williamsburg and Beatrice Cleveland of Mexico, N.Y., and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sisters Beatrice Riddell, Olive Timmins, Blanche Coughler, Marian Wolf, Doris Gibson and Dora Jackson, and by his brother Cecil Casselman.
Friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home, Brockville, where on January 17 the funeral was held, with Rev. Myra Garvin, of St. John's United Church, officiating. Burial followed at Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
The pallbearers were David Harper, Bev Pattemore, Tim Kelly and Bob Crotty.
Memorial donations were directed to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Joan Williamson, 67
ATHENS -- Joan Marie Williamson, 67, died March 8, 2003 at her home in the village.
She was born July 13, 1935 in Brockville to Robert Metcalfe and the former Nelda Sayeau. She was raised in Brockville on Church Street and attended Horton Public School and Brockville Collegiate Institute.
On April 23, 1955 she married Gordon Williamson in Holy Trinity Church, Oak Leaf.
She worked at Parke-Davis pharmaceutical plant in Brockville in her younger years. Then while she took time off from work to raise her children, she babysat local youngsters. She went back to work in 1981, employed at Shorewood Packaging until her retirement in 1996.
She lived at the family's home in Athens and the cottage on Bass Lake. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends in both places; watching figure skating or a good movie; listening to gospel, country and blues music; and being with her cat, Trouble.
Mrs. Williamson was predeceased by her husband Gordon on January 22, 1997, her son Gregory and daughter Lesley Yates.
She is survived by her son Corey Williamson and companion Debbie Haayema of Athens; four grandchildren, Dana, Nikki and Erika Yates and Blaine Haayema; sister Barbara Hone and husband Bud of Brockville; and sisters-in-law Beatrice Murphy and husband Don of Athens and Vera Shannon and husband Joe of Calgary.
Friends called at the Judson Funeral Home, Athens, on March 10. The funeral took place March 11 in Christ Church, Athens, with Rev. Michael Bury officiating. Burial will be at Oak Leaf Cemetery in the spring.
The pallbearers were Terry Yates, Don Murphy, Steve Kelsey, Gary Reuvers, Chris Healey and Tracy Stevens.
Memorial donations were directed to the Canadian Cancer Society and Heart and Stroke Foundation.
