ELGIN -- Anna Bessie Galway, 80, of Smiths Falls, died January 18, 2003 at Carveth Care Centre in Gananoque after a long illness.
She was born August 21, 1922 in Lyndhurst to Gyles Baxter and the former May Sly. She grew up in Lyndhurst, where she married Walter Galway in 1939.
She worked as a telephone operator for many years, starting in Lyndhurst in the 1940s, continuing in Elgin and working in Toledo 1959 to 1966.
She identified with St. Luke's Anglican Church in Lyndhurst and enjoyed knitting, crocheting and cooking.
Mrs. Galway is survived by four sons, Garth of RR 4, Brockville, Lynne of Kitchener, Barry of Frankville and Roger of Kitchener; two daughters, Urene Hartley of Seeleys Bay and Donna Botham of Smiths Falls; a sister, Norma Lappan of Lansdowne; and 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband and her sister Doris Campbell.
Friends called at the Scotland Funeral Home, Elgin where on January 21 the funeral was held, with Pastor Walter Hegedorn officiating. Burial followed at Lillies Baptist Cemetery, Seeleys Bay.
The pallbearers were grandchildren Kevin Hartley, Doug Botham, Scott Botham, Tracey Galway, Christopher Galway and Theressa Galway. The honorary bearer was grandson Ed Hartley.
Memorial donations were directed to Carveth Care Centre Palliative Care Program and other charities.
Winona Ashley, 75
Winona Jean Ashley, 75, retired bookkeeper, died February 2, 2003 at Brockville General Hospital.
She was born May 22, 1927 in Brockville to Edward Blake Dickey and the former Ethel Clow. She was raised in Yonge Mills and attended Brockville Collegiate Institute, after which she worked in the Superior Grocery store and at King's Bake Shop.
On April 23, 1949 she married Richard Erle "Bucky" Ashley in Brockville. She helped her husband run the Garbutt Hotel until it was sold in the 1960s.
After that she worked as a bookkeeper at Singer's, Automatic Electric, and Wark's Pharmacy until her retirement in the late 1980s.
Mrs. Ashley loved to do crafts, knit and read. She was a member of the Leeds-Grenville branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society and helped record cemetery records at the library and museum.
She is survived by her husband "Bucky" Ashley and her daughter Susan Ashley and husband Neil Warner of Calgary. Also surviving are her daughter-in-law Jane Ashley of Kamloops, B.C., sisters-in-law Lenna Dickey and Margaret Milne of Brockville, and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her son Lawrence "Larry" Ashley in 1995, her parents, sisters Florence Warren and Nora Hollingsworth and brother Cecil Dickey.
Her funeral was held February 4 in the chapel of the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, with Rev. Dr. Helen Wilson officiating. Burial will be at Yonge Mills Cemetery in the spring.
Memorial donations were directed to the Hospice of Providence Palliative Care.
Gladys McIntyre, 75
PRESCOTT -- Gladys Edith Irene McIntyre, 75, died February 26, 2003 at Brockville General Hospital.
She was born July 13, 1927 at Inkerman to Donald Casselman and the former Edith Cardwell.
She worked in the shipping and receiving department at the Newell Manufacturing plant in Prescott. Her interests included fishing, woodworking and caring for her animals.
She is survived by her brother Delbert Casselman and wife Lydia, sisters-in-law Betty and Charlotte Casselman, friend Eleanor Reid and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, husband Lawrence McIntyre, brothers Albert, Erwin, Edwin and Fred Casselman and Gerald Wilkinson, and sisters-in-law Naomi and Eleanor Casselman.
Friends called at the Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott, where on February 28 the funeral was held, with Rev. Patricia Swann officiating. Burial will be at Sandy Hill Cemetery in the spring.
Memorial donations were directed to Hospice of Providence Palliative Care and the Humane Society.
Luella Yateman, 78
Luella Jane Yateman, 78, died February 8, 2003 at Brockville General Hospital.
She was born June 2, 1924 in Brockville to John Yateman and the former Helen Wescon and grew up at Eastons Corners.
She worked as a hairdresser in Brockville for 20 years, retiring at 38. She then lived in Cameron, Ont. for 30 years. She married Robert Mulholland on September 12, 1970 in Midland, Ont. In 2001 she returned to Brockville.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for several years. Her interests included crossword puzzles, sports, nature, her cat, playing cards, traveling and spending time at home.
She is survived by her husband Robert Mulholland, sister Elva Miller of Tincap and several nieces and nephews, as well as Sunday Weagant and Marcie Bowdridge.
She was predeceased by her parents, four brothers and four sisters.
A graveside service for family and friends will be held April 5 at Brown's Cemetery in Fairfield, north of Brockville off North Augusta Road. Rev. Myra Garvin, of St. John's United Church, Brockville, will officiate.
Nancy Harrison, 42
Nancy Beryl Harrison, 42, died January 31, 2003 at her home in Brockville with her family by her side.
She was born in Brockville on July 13, 1960, the youngest daughter of Robert Louis Dixie Sr. and the former Phyllis Simones.
On August 24, 2001 she married Tom Harrison in a ceremony on the bridge at Brock Street Park.
She grew up at 244 King Street West and later moved with her family to 48 Wright Crescent in Brockville.
She worked as a health-care aide at Sherwood Park Manor for the past 23 years. A few years ago, a special friendship developed between her and a resident of the manor, whom everyone said reminded them of her father, who had died years before. In appreciation for the time she spent with him as a private health care aide, he took her on cruises to Alaska, Cancun and the Caribbean. Plans were being made for a European trip when her health failed.
She enjoyed activities with her family and close friends, gardening and caring for her pets.
Mrs. Harrison is survived by her husband Tom and one step-daughter, Melissa Harrison.
Also surviving are her mother Phyllis Dixie of Brockville, sister Carole Flaherty and husband Karl of St. Catharines and three brothers, Robert "Bob" Dixie Jr. and wife Debbie of Brockville, John Dixie and wife Linda of North Augusta and Bill Dixie Sr. and wife Trudy of Brockville.
She is survived by five nieces and four nephews, Jessica, Taira, Amanda, Teaghan and Billy Dixie Jr., Karl, Kevin and Michael Flaherty and Angie Wild; two great-nieces and two great-nephews, Kendra Flaherty (her godchild) and Kyle Flaherty of St. Catharines, and Kaleigh and Christopher Dixie of Toledo.
She was predeceased by her father and her sister-in-law Susan Dixie (nee Forbes).
Cremation took place after a private family gathering on February 1 and friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home, Brockville. A memorial service was held February 4, with Rev. Roy Kenny officiating. Remembrances were given by her brother Bob Dixie and a poem was read by great-niece Kaleigh Dixie. Burial will take place at Glen Elbe Cemetery at a later date.
The honorary pallbearers were Bill Dixie Jr., Kevin Flaherty, Michael Flaherty, Christopher Dixie and Doug Harrison.
Memorial donations were directed to Hospice of Providence Palliative Care and the Canadian Cancer Society.
