Bartlett "Bart" Kenney, 91, died March 3, 2003 at Brockville General Hospital.
He was born John Joseph Bartlett Kenney in Kingston July 10, 1911 to William D. Kenney of Jones Falls and Margaret Ingoldsby of Tamworth. In 1915 the family moved to Brockville, where he attended St. Francis Xavier School and Brockville Collegiate Institute. His summers were spent at Jones Falls.
When he was 18 he began working with the Brockville brokerage firm of R. Moat and Company.
In July 1941 he married Nora Bruce at St. Francis Xavier Church and began working in the Canadian National Railway ticket office on King Street. He later moved to Kingston to manage the CN passenger sales department. On his retirement, June 19, 1975, he was passenger supervisor for the Rideau district.
After retiring, he and his wife returned to Brockville and enjoyed their family, friends and traveling. They spent winters in Florida and travelled to British Columbia numerous times.
Mr. Kenney was an active member of St. Francis Xavier Parish and had belonged to the Knights of Columbus since April 1939. He was elected Grand Knight in 1975.
His family says he was a true gentleman who lived his long life with unfailing strength and dignity. He had a fun-loving nature and knew many people in Brockville.
He is survived by Nora, his wife of 62 years, and two sons, J. David Kenney and wife Suzanne of Brockville and W. Bruce Kenney and wife Bonnie of Mallorytown, daughter-in-law Jill (Murphy) Kenney of Portsmouth, N.H., and grandchildren Barbara Anne Fry and her husband Ken of Toronto, Michael Patrick Kenney of Vancouver and Sean Murphy Kenney of New Hampshire, as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, sisters Eleanor and Doris and a brother Harold.
The Liturgy of the Christian Funeral was celebrated on March 4 at St. Francis Xavier Church, with Father Brian Price officiating. Burial followed at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery.
The pallbearers were Bill Lawless, Robert Campton, Tom Barr, Bill Lefave, Bill Gordon and Robert Charbonneau.
Memorial donations to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind were gratefully acknowledged. Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, made the arrangements.
Kay Kingston, 81
SPENCERVILLE -- Kathryn "Kay" Marie Kingston, 81, died February 19, 2003 at her home in Spencerville.
She was born November 17, 1921 in Roebuck where she was raised by her parents, Charlie Whitley and the former Hazel Baker. She married Art Kingston in October 1940 and together they farmed in Roebuck until 1978. After her husband's death in 1989, she moved to The Maples in Spencerville.
She was a lifetime member of Roebuck United Church, Roebuck Women's Institute and Roebuck United Church Women. She was also an active member of the Roebuck Seniors Club and continued to be an avid sports fan, often attending games near and far. She could often be found playing cards with her friends at The Maples or the Legion.
She is survived by her four children, Shirley Frank of Spencerville, Dale and wife Janice of Roebuck, Beverly Ferguson and husband Hubert of Mallorytown and Lynn Hutton and husband Peter of Spencerville, as well as grandchildren Brenda, Donna, Darryl, Dustin, Michael, Kathy, Jason and Tarah, and great-grandchildren Jesse, Nicholas, Cooper and Bryce.
Also surviving are her sisters Ruth Leeder of Brockville and Anne Moore and husband Earl of Johnstown, brother James Whitley and wife Greta of Roebuck, cousin Joyce Froom and husband Walter of Prescott, and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Art, daughter Audrey, son Billy, sister-in-law Edith Hall and brothers-in-law Percy Hall and Al Leeder.
Friends called at the Grant Brown Funeral Home, Purcell Chapel, in Spencerville on February 22. Her funeral was held February 23 at Roebuck United Church, with Rev. Donald Wachenschwanz and Cathie Kelso officiating. Recollections of her life were given by 11 family members and friends and special music was sung by Janice Kingston and Hubert Ferguson.
Burial will be at Spencerville Union Cemetery in the spring. The pallbearers were grandchildren Donna Frank, Michael Ferguson, Darryl Kingston, Jason Hutton, Dustin Kingston and Ed Palmer.
Memorial donations were directed to Roebuck United Church.
Vivian Arthurs, 78
WILLIAMSBURG -- Vivian Arthurs, 78, of Morrisburg, died April 5, 2003 at Winchester District Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
She was born July 18, 1924 in Prescott to Ernest Lawrence and the former Lila Hill. She married Gerald Arthurs on January 9, 1943 in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church manse, Prescott. She lived in Toronto for many years, then moved to Morrisburg 29 years ago.
She was a member of the Knox Presbyterian Church Ladies Group, the Ladies Auxiliary at Winchester Hospital and the Morrisburg Curling Club.
She enjoyed many Florida vacations with her husband until his death November 28, 1999. She liked to play bridge, knit and make candles, especially for occasions such as Christmas.
Mrs. Arthurs is survived by her daughters Patricia Campbell and husband Bruce of Ottawa and Wendy MacGregor and husband Peter of Morrisburg, grandchildren Jennifer Draper, Jonathan MacGregor and Jordan MacGregor, and great-grandchild Ty Draper, sister Janet McCorkell and husband David, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her sisters Dora McMullen and Catherine Horgan.
Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Williamsburg, where on April 7 the funeral was held, with Rev. Darren May officiating. Burial will be at the Blue Church Cemetery, Prescott, in the spring.
Memorial donations to the Winchester District Memorial Hospital will be gratefully acknowledged by the family.
Claud Cheetham, 90
Claud Cheetham, 90, of RR 2, Prescott, died March 19, 2003 at Brockville General Hospital. He was hospitalized for nine days following a ruptured bowel.
Born in Philipsville on February 21, 1913, he was the son of Louis Cheetham, of Plevna, Ont., and the former Laura Gregg, of Mississippi, Ont.
He married Ellen B. Crawford on October 26, 1932, in Smiths Falls.
Over the years he lived in Plevna, Maberley, Mountain Grove, Plevna again, Lansdowne, Ivy Lee, Fairfield and Prescott.
He worked as a cheesemaker, guide on the lakes around Plevna, mail carrier, farmer, truck driver for Smith Transport, school bus driver, caretaker at Maynard School and for the Maynard cemetery, and mail carrier for the Prescott area. He also worked for the Department of Highways on Highway 401. He retired 30 years ago.
His identified with the United Church and his interests included his home and family; fishing and hunting; playing violin, harmonica and jew's harp and stepdancing; and reminiscing about his younger years with family and friends.
Mr. Cheetham is survived by three sons, David of Cardinal, Alvin "Jerry" of Prescott and Robert of Lyn, and two daughters, Lois Telgen of North Channel and Lucille DeDekker of Prescott, and sister-in-law Shirley Crawford, as well as 15 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife Ellen Cheetham, infant son Cheliaes, daughter Bonnie Yateman and son-in-law Valere DeDekker.
Friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home, Brockville, where on March 22 the funeral was held, with Father Claude Delorme officiating.
The pallbearers were Tony and Dale Cheetham, Rene DeDekker, Bill Brisson, Peter Boyd and Dave Helmus.
Memorial donations were directed to the Canadian Cancer Society and Hospice of Providence Palliative Care.
Lorne Conley, 90
KEMPTVILLE -- Lorne Edson Conley, 90, a lifelong resident of RR 1, South Mountain (the Hyndman Road along the Nation River) died February 10, 2003 at the Osgoode Care Centre.
He had been in failing health for the last two months and had been in Kemptville District Hospital for several months prior to his recent move to the care centre.
He was born November 18, 1912, in Edwardsburgh Township, the oldest son of Robert Conley and the former Mary Ellen "Ella" Perry. He attended Hyndman School and identified with Heckston United Church.
On November 5, 1943, he married Eileen Carson of Heckston in Spencerville and continued to live on the family farm in Hyndman.
Over the years Mr. Conley was a farmer, a maintenance man for the local school board and a carpenter.
He spent his retirement days at his window, watching the comings and goings on the Hyndman Road. He had a great memory for dates and recalled stories from the past.
He enjoyed playing cards, watching sports and most of all spending time with his family, grandchildren and friends.
He is survived by his wife Eileen Conley of RR 1, South Mountain; children Lloyd and wife Debbie (nee Banning) of Nepean, Lois Grant and husband Ritchie of RR 1, South Mountain, and Lorraine MacIntyre and husband Ian of Ottawa; and grandchildren Stefanie Grant, Amanda and James MacIntyre and Adam Hicks.
Also surviving are his brother John Conley and wife Edna of Brockville, brother-in-law Charles Carson and wife Hilda, and sisters-in-law Margaret Carson and Louise Dalgleish and husband Wayne, as well as several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, an infant daughter, daughter-in-law Margaret Cruikshank, brother Howard and brothers-in-law George, John and Peter Carson. Another brother and a sister Pearl died in infancy.
The funeral was held February 13 at the Grant Brown Funeral Home, Rolston Chapel, in Kemptville, with Rev. Mary Lou Shortill officiating. Bruce Robinson and Minnie Pelton gave remembrances.
The pallbearers were Kevin Harrison, Bill Fowler, Richard Carson, Robert Carson, Bruce Robinson and Lawrence Wallace. Burial will be at South Gower Cemetery in the spring.
Memorial donations were directed to the Canadian Diabetes Association and Kemptville District Hospital Tribute Fund.
