Bill Sheldrick, 72

MORRISBURG -- Bill Sheldrick, a longtime Ontario Hydro construction supervisor and the founder of Camp Sheldrick, died December 7, 2002 at the Winchester Hospital after a year-long battle with cancer. He was 72.

He was born February 9, 1930, in Gananoque to Irvine Sheldrick and Dorothy Larmour.

Mr. Sheldrick married Joan Smith July 1, 1954. The couple lived on Sheldrick Road for 43 years.

He was a construction supervisor with Ontario Hydro for 42 years. He supervised the construction and upgrading of electrical distribution and transformer stations across Ontario and was involved in the operation of nuclear power generation stations. He helped many fellow community members find work with Ontario Hydro and continued to work for the company as a consultant after his retirement in 1991.

Mr. Sheldrick became involved in scouting 30 years ago as a community troop leader. He served as assistant district commissioner for many years and president of the St. Lawrence District. With the help of people in the community and organizations including local Lions Clubs and Royal Canadian Legion branches, Mr. Sheldrick founded a youth camp on Nesbitt Road south of Winchester. He also organized an international scouting movement with troops from Pennsylvania, which continues as an annual exchange.

His family describe him as "truly inspiring" and willing to tackle any task, however big or small.

Mr. Sheldrick was a member of Excelsior Masonic Lodge and identified with Knox Presbyterian Church, where he was caretaker for more than 30 years and a church elder.

He is survived by his wife, Joan, and children Judy of Russell, Bill Jr. of Cornwall and Cindy Froats (Rick) and Paul, both of Morrisburg, and grandchildren Katrina, Kimberly, William, Bryan and Clayton. Also surviving are siblings Hilda Meek of Battersea, Russell (Theresa) of St. Catharines and David (Nancy) of Ottawa.

Mr. Sheldrick was predeceased by his parents and sister Jean Sheldrick.

Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Williamsburg. A Masonic service was held December 10. The funeral was at Knox Presbyterian Church December 11 with Rev. Darren May officiating. Interment was at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Morrisburg.

In the early 1940s he joined the armed forces and served in England during the Second World War.

Upon his return, he found work with the Toronto Transit Commission, first washing street cars, then driving buses. Then he transferred to Gray Coach and worked his way up the ranks to supervisor. He worked for the company for 34 years and often said it was the best company in the world to work for.

He joined the Masonic Lodge while living in Toronto and remained a member in good standing.
