John Kennedy, 93

John E. Kennedy, 93, died February 6, 2003 at Brockville General Hospital.

He was born January 7, 1910 in Brockville, the first child of Francis "Frank" Kennedy and the former Elizabeth "Lizzie" Currie.

He lived all his life in Brockville and married Ethel Turland on June 27, 1935.

He worked for the Stetson Hat Works before hiring on as a fireman for the Canadian National Railways.

Mr. Kennedy and his wife built a cottage on Bass Lake in 1948 and enjoyed entertaining family and friends there over the years.

He loved spending time with his grandsons and taught them and most of his nephews to fish when they spent summers at the cottage.

He also enjoyed playing cards, either at home or at the Legion on Mondays and Wednesdays.

He is survived by his wife Ethel Kennedy, daughter Iris Laird and husband Francis of Brockville, and four grandsons, Kevin Laird and wife Julie of Strathroy, Stephen Laird and wife Diane of Port Elgin, Michael Laird and wife Karen of Port Elgin and Peter Laird of Brockville, as well as great-grandchildren Ryan, Courtney, Meghan, Melissa and Tyson.

He was predeceased by his parents, daughter Janice Irene in 1998, brother Bill Kennedy and sister Anna Wade.

Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, where on February 8 the funeral was held, with Rev. Stan Riley, Anglican Church, officiating.

Burial followed at Oakland Cemetery, just west of Brockville.

Memorial donations were directed to the Canadian Diabetes Association.

Lorne Conley, 90

KEMPTVILLE -- Lorne Edson Conley, 90, a lifelong resident of RR 1, South Mountain (the Hyndman Road along the Nation River) died February 10, 2003 at the Osgoode Care Centre.

He had been in failing health for the last two months and had been in Kemptville District Hospital for several months prior to his recent move to the care centre.

He was born November 18, 1912, in Edwardsburgh Township, the oldest son of Robert Conley and the former Mary Ellen "Ella" Perry. He attended Hyndman School and identified with Heckston United Church.

On November 5, 1943, he married Eileen Carson of Heckston in Spencerville and continued to live on the family farm in Hyndman.

Over the years Mr. Conley was a farmer, a maintenance man for the local school board and a carpenter.

He spent his retirement days at his window, watching the comings and goings on the Hyndman Road. He had a great memory for dates and recalled stories from the past.

He enjoyed playing cards, watching sports and most of all spending time with his family, grandchildren and friends.

He is survived by his wife Eileen Conley of RR 1, South Mountain; children Lloyd and wife Debbie (nee Banning) of Nepean, Lois Grant and husband Ritchie of RR 1, South Mountain, and Lorraine MacIntyre and husband Ian of Ottawa; and grandchildren Stefanie Grant, Amanda and James MacIntyre and Adam Hicks.

Also surviving are his brother John Conley and wife Edna of Brockville, brother-in-law Charles Carson and wife Hilda, and sisters-in-law Margaret Carson and Louise Dalgleish and husband Wayne, as well as several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, an infant daughter, daughter-in-law Margaret Cruikshank, brother Howard and brothers-in-law George, John and Peter Carson. Another brother and a sister Pearl died in infancy.

The funeral was held February 13 at the Grant Brown Funeral Home, Rolston Chapel, in Kemptville, with Rev. Mary Lou Shortill officiating. Bruce Robinson and Minnie Pelton gave remembrances.

The pallbearers were Kevin Harrison, Bill Fowler, Richard Carson, Robert Carson, Bruce Robinson and Lawrence Wallace. Burial will be at South Gower Cemetery in the spring.

Memorial donations were directed to the Canadian Diabetes Association and Kemptville District Hospital Tribute Fund.

Harry Brown, 84

Longtime Brockville resident Harry Allen Brown died January 19, 2003 at St. Lawrence Lodge. He was 84.

Born here November 2, 1918, he was the son of Clair Clifford Brown and the former Sarah Ferguson. He was raised in the Brockville area and attended Row's Corners Public School.

On April 7, 1938, he married the former Edna Beatrice Brontmire in Brockville.

Over the years Mr. Brown worked as a farmer on numerous farms in the area. He enjoyed being with his family. His interests included farming - raising numerous types of animals and wild fowl - and going to sales barns and auction sales.

He is survived by four sons, John Brown of Cornwall, David Brown and wife Caroline and Wilfred Brown and wife Betty of Kinburn, and Harry Brown and wife Sandra of Finch; eight daughters, Sarah Axcell and husband Charles of Kirkland Lake, Shirley Savoy and husband George and Marion Brown, all of Ottawa, Bernice Mallory and husband Dwayne, Irene Plume and friend Don Blair, and Edna Cassibo and husband Ron, all of Brockville, Phyllis Brown of Chesterville and Barbara Poole and husband Ernest of Barrie; and 34 grandchildren.

Also surviving are his brother Leslie Brown of Brockville and sisters Sarah Hough and husband Ed, Beatrice Davis and husband Reg, Florence O'Connor and Mary Golledge and husband David, all of Brockville.

He was predeceased by his wife Edna, daughters Beverley Thibeault and Beatrice Brown, son Allen Brown, brothers Clarence and Charles Brown and sisters Eleanor Sargent and Margaret Sargent.

Friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home and Chapel, Brockville, where on January 23 the funeral was held with Rev. Dr. Helen Wilson officiating. Burial will take place at Read's Cemetery in the spring.

Memorial donations were directed to various charities.

Bessie Morrow, 77

LANSDOWNE -- Jessie Loreen Bessie Morrow, 77, formerly of Fairfax, died January 24, 2003 at Kingston General Hospital.

She was born February 7, 1925 in Escott Township, the daughter of Elijah Allen and the former Jessie Salter.

She married Roy George Moore in January 1946 in Lansdowne. He died in October 1956 and she later married Walter Thomas Morrow, on January 18, 1963, in Gananoque. Her second husband predeceased her in July 1992.

She was a homemaker on the farm in Fairfax, northwest of Lansdowne, until she moved to the village of Lansdowne in the late 1970s. She identified with Lansdowne United Church.

She was always up for company and a good game of cards. She enjoyed her family and friends.

Mrs. Morrow is survived by five sons, George and wife Sharon, Charles and wife Kathryn, Roy and wife Kim, and John and wife Debbie, all of Lansdowne, and David and wife Helen of Mallorytown; three daughters, Alice Dogget of Lansdowne, Rose Dogget and husband Mike of Lansdowne, and Barb Vickery and husband Rick of Brockville; and four stepchildren, Eric Morrow, Lois Elliott and husband Blaine, Art Morrow and wife Karen and Gail Hunt and husband Bernie; as well as 18 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are her brothers Kenneth and Walter Allen, her sisters Beatrice, Alpha and Geraldine and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her husbands and her parents, she was predeceased by sisters Irene and Gladys and a brother Raymond Allen.

Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home, Lansdowne, on January 26. The funeral was held January 27 in Lansdowne United Church, with Rev. Allister Rose officiating. Her eulogy was given by granddaughter Tanya Moore and a poem by granddaughter Krista Vicker was read by grandson Michael Morrow. Burial followed at Union Cemetery, Lansdowne.

The pallbearers were her grandsons Charlie, Clarke and Dustin Moore, Wayne and Mike Morrow and Billy Doggett. Honorary pallbearers were Armor Griffin, Edward and Lenard Donovan, Leon Gavin, Edward Lappan and James Bolger.

Memorial donations were directed to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Lung Association and Canadian Cancer Society.

Wendy Countryman, 46

Wendy Lou Countryman, 46, of RR 2, Brockville died of heart failure February 5, 2003 at Kingston General Hospital after a five-day illness.

She was born April 19, 1956 at Brockville General Hospital, the daughter of Raymond Harold Forsyth and the former Joyce L. Polley. She attended North Augusta Public School, South Grenville High School and St. Lawrence College.

She married Lloyd Frederick Countryman on August 18, 1979 in Wall Street United Church.

A registered nurse, she worked at Brockville Psychiatric Hospital for about 12 years and then with the Victorian Order of Nurses.

She identified with St. Francis Xavier Church.

A well-known crafter in the area, she worked in stained glass, did needlepoint and woodworking and made teddy bears.

She is survived by her husband Lloyd, son Matthew E. Countryman of Kingston, mother Joyce Young and stepfather Delbert Young, brother Ronald B. Forsyth of Brockville, grandmother Irene Polley of Brockville, uncle Gary Polley and wife Nancy of London and aunt Joan Korim and husband Julius of Prescott, as well as nieces and nephews.

Also surviving are her father-in-law Milfred Countryman, brothers-in-law Gene Countryman and wife Marsha, Brian and wife Sandra, Dale and wife Nancy and Glen Countryman, and sisters-in-law June Timanus, Irene Yanko and husband David, and Terri Kinch and husband Jim.

She was predeceased by her father, Raymond Forsyth, and her mother-in-law Alice Countryman.

Friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home, Brockville, where the funeral was held February 8, with Deacon Stephane Pouliot, of St. John Bosco Church, officiating. Burial followed at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Maitland.

The pallbearers were Bob Smith, Carl Chwalek, Garry McMullen, Dave Meeks, Lyle Baker and Greg Beach.

Memorial donations were directed to the Kingston General Hospital ICU.
